Thur June 30 Had to leave a great B&B and off to the next. Got to Guiting Power Guest House around 9:15 to drop bags off and we weren't allowed as the host and hostess were still abed and were taking 24 hours off - come back at 4 pm. Well we went to the next door pub and a very friendly owner let us store our bags in a side shed and park our cars later in the day. We drove to Naunton where I was to be dropped off for 3 hours. Only thing there besides a few houses was the Black Horse Pub. I panicked since I would have to be in one spot for 3 hours at least. I could only think of yesterday when they were so long coming. Well the ... read more

Tuesday June 28 in Bourton on the Water Moved to our new B&B in BOTW. Excellent hosts at Lansdowne Guest Villas. After a tea and discussion of routes etc. the 3 decided to hike a shorter version. They drove me to the end point and I was able to souse out the village of Lower Slaughter and take some cool photos, visit an art exhibition (small local one but interesting) and then sit with a cappuccino in a big red leather wingback chair beside one of those giant fireplaces. Did not do a sketch since it is rather difficult to do a watercolour in the rain. I'll make up for it another day. When the others arrived they talked about mud, rain and a few fields and I nodded in sympathy. We ate a great lunch ... read more

Should have known. The breakfast was good and then the guys dropped us off at the start of the walk near the coffee shop. Off they went but the coffee shop didn't open until 9 and we were trying for an early start as it was to be a long day. Right away we started uphill but the sun was out. We were warned of mud and we weren't disappointed. Mud 6 to 9 regularly through a wood... straddled puddles and made new pathways to try to avoid the sucking mud. Our mph was low. We came to an area with an electric fence and Ian warned us of the dangers and this one was right across our path. Since there was no other way we figured we'd chance it since it's only a pulse every ... read more

Sunday, June 26 The Three Ways House started our day with a buffet breakfast. They were late setting up and then they kept getting our orders wrong. They brought Ross a bowl of porridge that could have fed 5. We'd also had poor service at dinner the previous evening. Beds were small and Ian and Lynn's toilet didn't work. However I was happy just to be able to walk to breakfast although I did it in my socks because I couldn't face getting my shoes on just yet. I actually put my hiking boots in the garbage. While Ross and Ian did the car transfer bit I carefully put all the first aid stuff I had on my feet and took 2 Advil just to start the day. Legs moved and we were soon climbing our ... read more

Started out okay - didn't go under any ladders or anything but something was working against us. The morning was nice with a super English breakfast and then R&I dropped Lynn and I for coffee in town while they drove our luggage to Mickleton and left one car and came back to us in the other. We hit the trail which was flat for about a half mile and then we started our first climb of the day. Not bad. Good view of the rain clouds in the east and those in the west. Later as we crossed an open field we stopped for a cookie under the only tree in sight and the thunder roared and lightening cracked. Now Ian is a grounding expert so we weren't to stand under a tree and we couldn't ... read more

Thursday, June 23 Off to do one more self guided tour around Oxford and could not find any parking and ended up out of the city. Decided to go ahead and head for Stratford-on-Avon. We got there after a couple of unnerving roundabouts and again it felt like we were in some kind of bump'em car game. Got to our B&B and since we beat L&I there we chose the room with the King bed and they got the bigger bathroom. We headed to lunch and left a message for L&I who met us at King's Head Pub about an hour later. Had a great beef and ale pie with all the trimmings. The we headed into Stratford to look around. Used both cars and we led and as soon as we got to the 2nd ... read more

Wednesday June 22 Packed suitcases and walked to the underground that had a lift (longer than I thought). On the way a guy put up a ladder right in front of me. I actually hesitated and thought of bad luck but poo-poohed that as a rather childish superstition and besides I'd gone under ladders before and nothing bad happened. Under I went and so did Ross. No problem getting to Heathrow to get to the car rental. After the paperwork we were sent to zone 1 to pick up any car we wanted in that area. Nothing there - 4 rows of nothing. Finally a staff member okayed our choice for 1 of the 3 cars in zone 2. Checked it all out for bumps and problems but all good. Off we go with Ross driving ... read more

Sunday- We left the ship at 9, found the train and got tickets (no strike until Monday), changed trains once, caught the subway after 100 stairs with heavy suitcases, and walked 5 blocks (some cobbled so not great on wheeled luggage but better than carrying) to our hotel. The room wasn't ready at noon so we left the suitcases but took our backpacks (still laden with heavy stuff), bought a phone sim card and then walked to the Thames. Had lunch at the National Theatre cafe and then subwayed back to the hotel (on a line that was a much shorter walk to the hotel. Napped a bit and unpacked a bit. Off to the Swan restaurant for an overpriced dinner and into the Globe Theatre. Sat behind one of the stage pillars so missed some ... read more
