Tuesday, Oct 23 Up late again. Have to stop reading my ereader so late at night. It does take my mind off the karaoke singers (who aren't very good - even I can tell) who seem to start up around 11 pm and go until 1 am. The sounds come in through the back window that's right over the bed. Anyway we decided our plan would be to walk around Montmartre and ponder going up the dome and then do a sketch somewhere and have lunch. I really wanted time in a few special stores in that area. Got off the Metro at a station that I thought was behind Sacre Coeur so we could walk down to it rather than hike the hill. Majorly wrong choice twice over. We came at it from the east ... read more

Monday, Oct 22 If you've read the earlier blogs you know I needed a coat. Have looked at a few but can't pay the prices when I have perfectly good jackets at home. Today was the day to find one. Late start since I fell back asleep at 7:30 and didn't rise until 9:30. Finally got out of the apartment at 11 and Metro to Chatelet. I had researched vintage clothing and thought we'd start there. The cheapest place was called Free'P'Star. I thought Monday mornings would be a slow time. Wrong. Got inside and could hardly move. Found a jacket right away but had to fight to move and got pushed to the back to a bin that was just stuffed full of clothes all for 1 Euro (Ross remained at the front of the ... read more

Oct 21, Sunday A bit late starting out but the time change hasn't affected us much, although as I type Ross is having his nap before bed again. Walked out and intended to head straight to Luxembourg Gardens but at our local street market it was art market day. Spent an hour looking at all the interesting sculptures, acrylics. oils and mixed media. Loved one painting but a wee bit pricey. Walked on to the gardens and was not too impressed until we got to the main area. What a people place. Seems like most of the population was out playing, reading, relaxing, sailing. Dawdled here sketching and people watching. Slowly wandered until we found a lunch place. Great food but a tight squeeze with close small tables. We had galettes - a little like crepes. ... read more

Oct 19, Friday Up at 5:30 since I went to bed at 9. Sorted through papers and did computer stuff until Ross woke at 8. Breakfast and off to the Metro. Got out at Cite and started randomly walking until we reached the official main tourist office. Ross engineered that since he always wants to visit every single tourist office we ever see. Anyway I found out a good coffee shop which was my only incentive to ask any questions. Le Pain Quotidien proved to be a good choice - croissants were delectable. The we walked all around the Marais area and we found this great store called Fleux. Good thing I don't live here - loved everyone of their four shops and could have spent a small fortune. Ross checked out a few things too. ... read more

Everything was ready to go and catch the Skytrain to the airport - only one last thing to add to the suitcase. Could not remember what it was and checked all my lists but everything was there. Oh well off to the airport. Sitting in the waiting area and yes - I forgot a jacket or coat or even sweater. Hmmm - how many Euros for a coat in Paris? In the waiting area I told Ross he needed to download the Westjet app so he could have entertainment on the plane. I had done it early in the morning. Then we both checked our headphones so we wouldn't blast our choices all over the plane. Mine worked and I was happy because I could never get it to work on my old computer. Ross could ... read more

Tues. Nov 29 Up early for breakfast and to see if anyone cancelled for the morning trip to White Island Volcano - nope. So we shopped in town (bought 2 tees). Back at 11 and yes there will be a trip for the afternoon and we are on it. Grabbed lunch and a coffee to go and went to wait for the boat. About 50 got off from the morning and 23 of us for the afternoon. Sat on the top covered deck and my seat choice had me soaking wet as soon as we left the harbour and hit some chopping waves. Moved under the canopy and swayed back and forth grabbing the bench sides to stay upright. After about an hour of moving I started to just concentrate on the horizon and planned where ... read more

Wed, Nov 23 Drove to 3 different beautiful quiet beaches - each one a perfect movie-type location. Had a late lunch at the KariKari Carrington Winery (going back there soon!) Rest of the day reading and all that relaxing kind of stuff. Thur, Nov 24 Drove to Hokene to do the Wairere Boulder walk. Got lost and after about 10km down a gravel road a very kind lady stopped her car and pointed us back in the opposite direction. Not really my fault as the road signs were very misleading and neither Ross nor I saw the big bold sign on the hill pointing to the Wairere Walk. Interesting walk and surprise, not as long as they said. Glad I took my poles with me or I would have been twice as long. Then off the ... read more

Friday, November 18 Missed Thursday being in the air and crossing the International Date Line. Flight was fine and arrived in Auckland on schedule. No problem driving the rental car (automatic) this time and we were out of the airport after 2 attempts. Ross did not want to bother with buying a GPS for NZ as they are rather high priced compared to Euopean ones. So somehow we did get headed north but completely missed Auckland even though we were going to stop there for a bit. Friendly people kept pointing us in different directions and we did get to Hwy 1. Countryside is lush, green, undulating hills. Roads are undulating too! And narrow and winding. Put me right to sleep … not a good thing for the navigator. November 12, Saturday Had the house all cleaned for C&E to dogsit, bags packed and the rain subsided as we walked to the Seabus. Timely connections and we were at the airport 3 hours ahead of time as I like for international flights. Minor line up and my suitcase was underweight. THEN the agent explained our passports would have to be checked. Not worried they were only a year old and good for 10 years. Seems there's a half cm waterdrop on Ross' photo and on mine the nose is rather indistinct (a good thing I thought) due to water damage. Clerk 1 consulted with clerk 2 who then called the supervisor. She spent 5 to 10 minutes talking with others and then came and asked us a few questions about the purpose of our trip. ... read more

Friday July 1 Happy Canada Day to all. In the morning I was dropped off in Winchcombe while the others did one of Ross' shortcut versions of the original hike (somehow was the same distance as the original). I spent the morning visiting local coffee shops, doing sketches, talking to shopkeepers and just walking around taking photos in the older part of town. We all met at the Lions Inn and had another good pub lunch then off to Cheltenham (bad traffic - definitely prefer the smaller villages). Back to Guiting Power for dinner at the Farmers Arms where they had our table reserved for us without us asking.
