Geo: 41.8947, 12.4839Ciao, The remains of ancient Rome are not confined to a single area of the modern city. Monuments and buildings from the era of the Roman Empire and earlier are scattered far and wide, yet the heart of the city boasts the largest concentration of ancient monuments. Knowing this we hopped on a bus to explore some of this area.We began at Piazza Venezia , a huge square from which some of the city's major streets lead off to the four points of the compass. The Palazzo Venezia is located here and is known for the balcony from which Mussolini badgered crowds in the square below. We moved on to view the Foro Romano (Roman Forum) next. It was the heart of the Roman Empire for over 1,000 years. The monuments, over their 3,000 year ... read more

Geo: 41.8947, 12.4839Caio,What an action packed day! We started off using public transportation instead of walking. Campo dei Fiori was our first stop of the morning. It's one of Rome's prettiest piazzas. It is the sight of a wonderful outdoor market, with palaces and houses providing the backdrop for a medley of stalls selling fruit, flowers, fish, spices, oils and vegetables. The square is also full of small cafes and restaurants. We moved on to Piazza Navona. This magnificent piazza is dominated by three fountains, a ring of buildings, many hung with flowers at this time of year and throngs of visitors, artists and stallholders selling their wares. It's a great place for people watching at all times of night and day. There is the Church of Sant'Agnese in Agone on the spot where she was martyred in ... read more

Geo: 41.8947, 12.4839We were able to catch an earlier train than we had planned on so we arrived in Rome by 8:45 a.m. That enabled us to have a full day of sightseeing. There is so much to see here. With the assistance of tourist information we were able to locate our Bed and Breakfast in less than 20 minutes. It's a quick, easy walk from the train station. After checking in and getting advice from the manager we set out to see what we could on day one in Rome. The temperature is again very hot today. The normal range is mid seventies but today it's in the upper nineties. Santa Maria Maggiore was our first destination. It is possibly the oldest of 80 churches in Rome dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The church was ... read more

Geo: 43.7687, 11.2569Our plan for today was to do a bike ride into the country to visit Greve and see some of the wine country. With temperatures soaring above 97 degrees we opted for Plan B which was to cover the same territory and more by a van tour. So this morning we went in search of the ticket office. We were first told, "Sorry, that tour is full." As the woman was explaining an alternative bus tour not quite as extensive, some guy came up and said, "This is your lucky day. We'll add a second tour and so far it's just you two on it." So we purchased our tickets and would later be picked up at our hotel. We continued to walk through the streets to view morning activity and revisited Palazzo Vecchio. There ... read more

Geo: 43.7687, 11.2569Buongiorno,We're in the midst of our afternoon rest. This is not the hottest time of the year in Florence and yet the heat and sun are almost unbearable. We've been told it gets worse in July and August because the humidity rises. I'm glad we will be home by then. It also would not be so uncomfortable if you were not walking for miles to see the sights It's all part of taking a vacation and dealing with whatever conditions come your way.Our morning began with a real homecooked breakfast. The place we are staying in is a bed and breakfast. We were served orange juice, hot tea, croissants, yogurt, grilled ham and cheese sandwiches, omelets, cookies and fresh fruit. It was nicely prepared and very good. We needed that nourishment to carry us ... read more

Geo: 43.7687, 11.2569Yea! We got to sleep in this morning and got up at 5:45. We rode the water taxi back to the train station. It was beautiful on the water in the early morning. We were among other vacationers but also many local people on the way to their jobs. Once at the station we had time for hot tea and croissants. These were so light and flaky with a tasty apricot filling! We rode a fancy high speed train this morning. It had adjustable cushioned seats, individual reading lamps with magazines provided, jacks for headphones with piped in music, electric outlets and wifi capability. They also passed out complimentary newspapers, beverages and cookies. It was a very enjoyable journey that went direct to Florence.Another observation-Cell phone service here must be better than at home. People ... read more

Geo: 45.4345, 12.3384We're off to Venice this morning. We caught an earlier train than expected in Genoa and again made an earlier connection in Milano. This will provide us with more time to spend in Venice since we will only spend one day here . From the train Milano appeared to be a large city. The landscape of the countyside went from mountainous to flat. In the area of Verona there are many corn and hay fields along with grapevines and fruit trees. Just an observation-for all the countryside we've traveled through we haven't seen any livestock like cows, sheep or cattle. From the train station we made our way to our hotel which was quite a challenge. The temperature was high, the sun was blazing and the streets are a maze. Our GPS provided no ... read more

Geo: 44.1464, 9.65572Surprise! We're off again. We are on a train headed to Cinque Terre. It's only a day trip, then back to Genoa for the night. The name means "five villages" and is a National Park. This monument in landscape architecture is represented by the steep terraces sloping down to the sea. The terraced vineyards alternate with strips of olive trees. We visited two of the villages, the first being Vernazza. Earlier this year much of this village was destroyed by a huge mudslide. It is now in stages of reconstruction. You can see evidence of the mud line on the buildings and the lower levels of the residences are vacant and being repaired, cleaned, and painted. There are also passageways that are still blocked by the mud. The actual village consists of one main ... read more

Geo: 44.4071, 8.93399We're traveling green these days. We've moved around by plane, train, tram, bike, motorcycle, bus, subway and foot. The only modes of transportation missing are car and horse carriage and we don't have plans for using either! As we were entering Italy and sitting in a café in Ventimiglia we realized that Italy is truly noted for its' delicate pastries. The ones we are enjoying right now are delicious with light flaky crust and a custard filling. The hot chocolate is a little different. It's the consistency of hot, chocolate pudding. It had to be eaten with a spoon but had a great taste! We arrived in Genoa and caught a bus to our hotel. Of course several blocks of walking were included and stopping a young couple to ask for directions. They spoke both ... read more

Geo: 43.7034, 7.2662On our final day in Nice we still had things we wanted to see and do. After a quick breakfast Place Rosetti was our first stop. It is considered one of the most picturesque in Old Nice with fountains, flower-decked balconies, a cathedral and café terraces. In that square the Cathedral of Sainte-Reparate is located. This church, which became a Cathedral in the 16th century, is the largest sanctuary in Old Nice. Unfortunately it was closed but is said to have an interior that reflects the influence of Saint Peter's of Rome. While in Old Nice we saw one of the few remaining examples of the decorated facades in this area. It is dated 1584 and shows Adam and Eve naked in the Garden of Eden, threatening each other with clubs. This house is famous ... read more
