Geo: -37.8143, 144.963This morning began with a bike ride to the Queen Victoria Market. In all our recent travels we always visit the local market to get that true feeling of the local people. This market was the biggest we have encountered. It is spread over two city blocks. They have a Dairy Hall, Meat Hall, Organic section and Fruit and vegetable stands. In the dairy hall there are 37 outlets of delicatessens, bakeries , a beer and wine shop and a tea and coffee merchant. The meat Hall again has 37 outlets selling fresh meat, poultry and fish. There are just as many fruit and vegetable vendors along with those that sell spices and dried herbs, dried fruit and nuts, and also more wine vendors. Included also in the market are general merchandise stalls that ... read more

Geo: -37.8143, 144.963It seems like another long day since we have not adapted to the time change. We were awake by 4:00 a.m. Which was way to early to begin the day so we spent some time reading and planning the rest of the day. By 7 a. m. We left for breakfast and then spent a couple of hours walking some of the streets in the Central Business District which we hadn't seen yesterday. Our plan for the day was to rent bikes and ride one of the bike trails along the Pacific Ocean. We rode through the cities of St. Kilda, Brighton, Bayside and Black Rock. The ride going was great. The return trip was a little challenging because of the strong head winds all the way back. The temperature was perfect because it ... read more

Geo: -37.8143, 144.963Flights went well. Landed in LA at 10 p .m. And had to take a shuttle bus to another terminal to catch next flight. That was a little scary, riding around on a bus in the dark between runways among the moving planes. For those who likes stats, we flew Virgin Australian from LA,California , in a Boeing 777 airplane. The flight was 15 hours and 45 minutes. We flew at an altitude of 35000 feet , 580 mph at a distance of 7966 miles. We passed the time by watching tv( personal tv behind each seat), listening to music, reading, and catching a little shut eye. Unlike our first flight from Detroit, this flight had no WiFi, but we didn't miss it.We landed in the country of sunshine Tuesday morning at 8:30 am. ... read more

Geo: 42.5991, -82.9312Yes, we're off for another traveling adventure. This year, we selected Australia. We've been asked why Australia? The simple answer is why not Australia- never been there and need to find out what it's all about. A few years back we met a friendly Australian couple on a train ride from Vienna, Austria to Warsaw, Poland and their excitement about their homeland fostered our appetite for their country.Been planning this excursion since January. Planning and researching is always an interesting part of any trip that builds your excitement and enthuisasm for what you're about to see. It's also an involved process to book flights and make lodging arrangements. If you follow our blog you can travel along with us and share our experiences. Geo: 20.9288, -156.694We just returned from a luau at the Sheraton Maui. The setting was on the lawn adjacent to the Kaanapali Beach during the hours surrounding a beautiful sunset. While waiting to be seated Mai Tai's and piña coladas were served and continued throughout the evening. The women were greeted with leis and the men with a carved turtle. The food was superb with plenty of variety. This was a traditional luau where the pig is baked in the ground called the imu. There is a ceremony to uncover it and then it is served as part of the meal. Along with the pork there was teriyaki chicken, grilled Mahi Mahi, mixed salad, cucumber salad, a pea and nut salad, purple sweet potatoes, a noodle salad, fresh pineapple and rice. The desserts were delicious also. ... read more

Geo: 20.9288, -156.694We had another day of total relaxation. We were poolside for the entire day. Linda got a lot of reading done, almost an entire novel. I spent a great deal of time talking to Jim, from Arizona, and his wife Diane. I learned quite a bit about his life from childhood to the present, including the places he lived and the jobs he has had during his lifetime. We discussed the economy, politics, our years growing up and the differences that our kids and grandkids will face. Jim and Diane are a well traveled couple. His primary source of income at this time is from revenue from a 1,000 acre pistachio farm His earlier employment was a small business owner of a carpet and flooring store. He mentioned several times how lucky a man ... read more

Geo: 20.9288, -156.694Yesterday, we used the day to visit sights along the Road to Hana. Today we stayed close to home and enjoyed lounging at the beach and pool. We enjoyed breakfast on our lanai before 7 o'clock. It's great to sit back and linger over breakfast knowing that we have no plans for the day other than to enjoy our beautiful surroundings. Taking our coffee and tea with us along with plenty of reading material we made our way to the pool. For the remainder of the day we moved back and forth between the pool and the beach/ocean. It was amazingly relaxing. While sitting poolside there are many opportunities to meet other people vacationing also. Some here for the first time, others for 10-20 years and one man from California has been coming here ... read more

Geo: 20.9288, -156.694Our plans today were to explore the east side of Maui. We did this by partaking in the popular activity of driving a 52 mile stretch of highway between Paia and Hana, commonly referred to as The Road to Hana. It allowed us to discover a Hawaii of an earlier time where nature is still wild, where ocean waves crash onto steep lava cliffs, and there is a real sense of serenity. The road goes through rain forests and along the deep blue Pacific Ocean You won't see any golf courses, shopping malls or McDonalds. Instead you'll discover the simple things like tropical flowers and the tastes of bananas, papayas and pineapples at roadside stands and the easy calmness of old Hawaii. The Hana highway winds around over 600 curves and over 51 one ... read more

Geo: 20.9288, -156.694This is a day for catching sun rays and feeling the pacific trade winds. We did not prepare a list of things to do. No need to check them off or feel pressure to get to them. Nothing important on the list to get to. After a leisurely breakfast at Whaler's Village, we decided to walk along Ka'anapali beach and hang out at pool side. Linda has plenty of magazines and I haven't had a chance yet to open my Danielle Steel novel. It's beginning to feel like home here. We are greeting all our neighbors that we have seen daily since we got here. Many of them must be regulars here, totally tanned and spend their entire day at the pool. They position themselves in the same spots poolside early in the morning ... read more

Geo: 20.9288, -156.694We left the condo at 3:00am this morning to start our sight seeing. Why so early? We were off to see a sunrise on the summit of Haleakala . It's a crater where you ascend 10, 023 feet above sea level on the world's largest dormant volcano. The Hawaiians recognize the mountain as a religious sight. Most people today drive up to the summit in predawn darkness to watch the sun rise. We had to make a two hour drive from our condo in the dark along many swithbacks ascending the mountain. It was a little nerve wracking because of the sheer drop offs and many sections had no guard rails. As you go up the mountain the temperature drops 3 degrees for every thousand feet. The temperature was in the low 40's so ... read more
