On our final day in Nice we still had things we wanted to see and do. After a quick breakfast Place Rosetti was our first stop. It is considered one of the most picturesque in Old Nice with fountains, flower-decked balconies, a cathedral and café terraces. In that square the Cathedral of Sainte-Reparate is located. This church, which became a Cathedral in the 16th century, is the largest sanctuary in Old Nice. Unfortunately it was closed but is said to have an interior that reflects the influence of Saint Peter's of Rome.
While in Old Nice we saw one of the few remaining examples of the decorated facades in this area. It is dated 1584 and shows Adam and Eve naked in the Garden of Eden, threatening each other with clubs. This house is famous for this mural.
We wandered the streets and walkways for a while, all of them lined with small shops , restaurants and cafes. Some of these passage ways are quite narrow as the vendors have their wares in the walkway and people are trying to pass through. We next stopped to see the Chapelle Sainte Croix which again we found not open. We also noted
that it is not really necessary to go out early in the morning as many businesses and sights do not open early in the day.
Renting bikes was next on our list. We wanted to ride the boardwalk on the coast. Just estimating we think it is over 5 miles in length. There are bike lanes the entire way.We rode west to the outside limits of Nice. On our return trip we exited the path to head North to see the Cathedrale Russe. The Sainte Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral was built in the early 20th century. This historic building is one of the most important outside of Russia. It is reported that the inside is richly decorated with many icons, murals, and carved woodwork as well as embossed metal. However this sight is closed at this time, as per our hotel clerk, due to some dispute over it between the French and the Russians. The outside is still a sight to behold. We returned to the bike path and continued to enjoy the sights and sounds along the coast. It was an enjoyable ride!
When you are on vacation you like to capture as many photos as you can to help you
recall all you have experienced. During the bike ride our camera began to malfunction. We stopped at an information center to have them direct us to the nearest camera shop. We figured it would be easier to get there by bike than to walk. We were right! We located the shop and they were able to assist us so the photos will continue.
With our errand complete and our riding done we returned the bikes and made out way back to the hotel. Our final day in Nice was another memorable one!
