We started the day lounging on our balcony in Cairns....sunny, tropical breezes, swaying palm trees. Then we had to leave, and we flew back to Sydney. Since today is 11-11-11, there are weddings galore at the harbor, and we were practically tripping over brides having their pictures taken with the Opera House as a back drop. As we strolled about wondering what to do about dinner, lo and behold Paul noticed it was 'Big Jugs Friday' at a local tavern. He hustled Janet in before she could make a peep of protest. It was very crowded, so Paul went and grabbed a table while Janet ordered at the bar....she then hoisted her two big jugs over to join Paul. Turns out that 'jugs' are what the Aussies call 'pitchers'. We both wrapped our hands around a ... read more

Today we took a drive up to the Daintree rainforest and Cape Tribulation. This is as far north in Queensland as you can drive without an off road vehicle. The road looked like it was hacked straight out of the jungle. When we rolled down the car windows it was a symphony of noises.....screeching bugs, loud birds and all manner of creepy crawlies, I'm sure. We stopped at a bat rescue center. They had a young bat who had been brought in by someone who witnessed it's mother being devoured by a python. Hats off to whomever will run over to rescue a young bat when a python is laying nearby.....we were able to handle and touch the young bat. Their faces are actually quite cute...big brown eyes, furry muzzle and kitten-like ears....you just need to ... read more

The title of today's entry does not imply in any shape or form that we purchased hideous new shoes.....we decided to go to Crocodile Adventures. When we purchased our tickets, Paul promptly signed Janet up for crocodile feeding duties. Is he getting tired of her? We made our way to the quiet swamp enclosure...but let the trainer pull out a dead chicken, and rustling ensued and about 40 huge crocodiles made their way over. The trainer used a large pole with crocodiles snapping all around him....Janet's stomach started to churn. Thank goodness the volunteer feeders got a bamboo pole with a chicken head on the end. The small offering got the crocs pretty agitated....just think of what a meatier morsel (Chipper, for example) would have done.... We then took a boat ride around the croc lagoon ... read more

Today we took a snorkel cruise out to the Great Barrier Reef. It was a wild, long ride out...people were barfing into bags all around us so we scuttled up to the deck and enjoyed the sea breeze. We went to the outer reef. We must have been with a real 'non-swimming' crowd as Paul and I were the only two who didn't need flotation devices or to be towed by the snorkel guides. They had asked us our swimming level prior to jumping in....after seeing everyone else we wanted to go back and upgrade our questionnaire to 'Michael Phelps' level. We decided to go wild and took a helicopter ride over the reef. You take a small boat to a small pontoon and get on the helicopter for a 20 min ride. The colors were ... read more

Today we ventured off on a drive to the rain forest and waterfalls after breakfasting on our oceanside balcony. We decided to drive into the mountains and take the waterfall circuit. We took a peek into the bat rehab center in Kurunda where they take care of injured bats. There is a tick-borne bat disease going on now, so they were closed, but we peeked through the fence and saw hundreds of them. The lady at the information booth told us of a nearby golf course where we might see wild kangaroos. As we pulled up, we stared morosely at miles of empty golf course....until Paul shrieked out "I see hopping!". we sped the car down to the end of the golf course, nearly wetting ourselves in excitement, and there were mobs upon mobs of wild ... read more

Yesterday we spent our last day in the Blue Mountains. We acted like tourists and went to Scenic World where we took all of the trams and cable cars over the valley. The tram had a glass floor so you could see all the way down into the canyon and we went over the top of Katoomba Falls. Paul is a whiz driving on the left. We went to a park that is known for wild kangaroos, but alas, there were none but we saw tons of parrots. We stayed near the airport as we had an early morning flight...the room was basic and we were glad to leave. Now we have arrived in Cairns.....paradise. We are in a top floor apartment right on the beach; gentle breezes, turquoise water, vodka chilling in the freezer for ... read more

Yesterday it poured rain, but today it was gloriously sunny and clear. The Blue Mountains are like the Grand Canyon, but they are indeed blue due to all of the eucalyptus and bluish hue. We decided to hike down to the base of the canyon; it was dry at the top but a fern grotto with waterfalls and creeks at the bottom. The walk was straight down on wet and slippery stairs and we realized with each step down we would be 'stair mastering' for hours back up....and we were. But the views mere magnificient. As for the guide's assurance that there were no steep drop offs, I beg to differ but Paul talked me through it. After the hike we refueled with traditional chicken pies. We had great desserts and I always snicker when Paul ... read more

Thanks to those who left comments...we forgot the cable to load pictures on our i-pad so will have to show you when we return! Today we rented a car in Sydney and drove on the left side of the road.....in pouring rain! Janet is a notorious back seat driver but did her best to 'zip it'.....okay one time she shrieked at Paul that he was going the wrong way on a one way street....he wasn't. Paul did keep fiddling with the wipers...he thought he was signaling lane changes but all he was doing was changing the wiper speed...oh well. We stopped at a wildlife park and Janet finally got to pet and feed koalas and kangaroos, all the while barking at Paul "take a picture!!". We made it to the Blue Mountains in heavy rain and ... read more

Today we took the bus to Bondi Beach. The beach is full of surfers since the waves are huge. We then took the Eastern Beaches coastal walk....beautiful walkways right along the beach and along the cliffs. They were having a sculpture festival and the art pieces were placed on the beach and on the cliffs. It was fun to see them all, as the walk was miles longer than we anticipated! But it was full of magnificent views. We arrived to Coogee Beach (hours) later and looked for some lunch. It was a toss up between a vegetarian restaurant or burgers.....we opted for bacon cheeseburgers and fries :). Spent the afternoon on Coogee Beach. The waves are huge. We had originally planned to walk back to Bondi......forget it, we took the bus back from Coogee. Everyone ... read more

This morning we walked up towards the Central Business District. We went through Hyde Park which is beautifully manicured with towering trres, fountains, and blooming flowers. We went into David Jones which is the fanciest dept store in Sydney. The food court was not to be believed. We purchased a takeaway picnic lunch: salads, mini chicken and brie pies, baguette, prosciutto and the most delicious chocolate dipped strawberry and dipped fig. We took our picnic to the botanic gardens and ate on the grass overlooking the harbor and opera house with a large flock of wild, screeching parrots in the trees behind us. As we ate our lunch, everyone in Sydney came out o their lunch break to have a jog....and I do mean everyone. Hundreds of runners in large groups and running at Kenyan-like speeds. ... read more
