Geo: 44.0996, 3.08127Warm and sunny around 18oC Chris was off early in the morning to go wood chopping in another forest to replenish his stocks for the wood burner so we said our goodbyes early. My thumbs worse and from the first knuckle to the tip is swollen to the extent that the skin feels ready to burst, Julia's examined it and thinks I need to see the doctor But I've said I'll leave it and see if it settles down after breakfast.Later on. No Joy the thumbs still playing up so reluctantly I gave in and Julia rang her Doctor (who happens to be the Mayor of the town) after a long discussion it transpired that he wasn't on duty today so arrangements were made to see his locum at the surgery annexed to the ... read more

Geo: 46.9868, 1.17416Warm and sunny. For some bizarre reason my thumbs started kicking off this morning its red hot and swollen (my thumb!) hopefully it'll sort itself out. After a hearty breakfast we set of for Loches, a pretty town we've come to love. I still think Linda's main reason for wanting to go was that it was market day and as such the butcher would be there selling his sausage but that's a another long story. A pleasant walk around the market with coffee in the square and a couple of purchases, not to mention some potted herbs (I so prefer to cook with fresh herbs and €0.5 you can't go wrong). We've booked a table for 4 tonight at the local restaurant and as this is the 3rd time we've tried to arrange an ... read more

Geo: 51.1297, 1.31114A delightfully serene crossing made even better by the absence of passengers, hardly anyone on board; and NO coach loads of children, foreign or otherwise. A quick top up of diesel before we trundle off from Calais ( not as cheap as I'd hoped for at €1.35) we enjoyed an uneventful journey down to Rouen avoiding the Autoroutes where possible, most of the prices we've seen for diesel so far are around the €1.45 mark. My thumb is well an truly on the mend I've now got full sensation back until the last knuckle and from there to the tip it just pins & needles. From Rouen we took the slow route along the N154 Evruex/Dreux/Chartres and then the N10 to Châteaudun, then D924 to Blois the D956 to Contres followed D675 to our ... read more

Geo: 52.6346, -1.12944Finally after weeks of preparation we're ready to take off, there's still so many things to think about but whatever we've forgotten we'll sort out when we get there. My thumbs still playing up after I slipped with an electrician's screwdriver at the weekend and managed to stick it right in to the end of my thumb; which must have nicked the nerve as although it soon stopped bleeding the whole of my thumb from tip to my wrist is pretty much dead, oh well it could be worse. The trip down to our overnight stopover in Dover took an agonising 4.5 hrs due to roadwork's and accidents, anyway we've now settled down with an early glass of wine to be followed by a short walk through the adjacent woods and the dinner before settling ... read more

Geo: 50.8998, -1.39561Saturday 11/04/09 At Sea Wind force 6 swells 2-3 m Some of the outside decks are off limits due to the weather so we completed the packing, but as for some bizarre reason tonight is a formal night we can't pack the last of our formal dress items so they'll have to be done tomorrow. After the evening show I decided to nip up to the Cyb@study and log on, update the blog and use up any outstanding minutes. Porno Pete was there as usual, I can't remember if I suggested it previously or not but we've come to the conclusion he must be owner of one of the websites as he's never off the PC, at Ponta Delgada after only 5 minutes off of the ship we saw him login on at a ... read more

Geo: 37.7463, -25.666806-09/04/09 At Sea Temps Air 28 to 19°C Sea 27 to 20°C Oh what a difference, the weather is starting to change for the worse with winds increasing to force 5-6 and swells of 2-3m. Each day means a reduction in the temperature of approx. 2°C that might not seem much but trust me I can tell you it's significant, it's meant a sad return to trousers and tee shirts and I've no doubt it'll be jumpers and jackets all too soon. Friday 10/04/09 Ponta Delgada - São Miguel the Azures Temps Air 8°C Sea 19°C Arrived slightly later than expected due to the constant headwinds (well that's the Captains excuse) the eastern half of the island is still covered in heavy cloud with light mist over the Western half. We had planned to ... read more

Geo: 17.0817, -61.8077Sunday 05/04/09 St Johns - Antigua Temps Air 28°C Sea 27°C Our berth once again is ideally placed being right alongside the city's main waterfront, straight off the ship to the many bars & cafes. Although it's Sunday the place is already humming as already berthed is the Holland-America Lines ship Maarsdam, and 15 minutes after our arrival the Fred Olsen Lines Booddica arrived and there's another due in later in the day We'd booked a 4 x 4 excursion to the centre of the island, which in view of the number of visitors now deposited on the island seems like a lucky choice. Off we lurched in our LR Defender through the city with our guide pointing out local points of interest, he was a proper laugh, so chilled, no problems man; up ... read more

Geo: 15.4338, -61.3531 Friday 03/04/09 Curacao - The Dutch Antilles Temps Air 32°C Sea 27°C Our berth once again is ideally placed being right alongside the Rif Fort and the entrance to the harbour of Willemstad the islands capital, making for an easy trip back and forth to the ship (probably laden with shopping) We're off for an early start as we'd booked an excursion on a semi submersible at 09:00. after a brief tour and introduction to the island we boarded the vessel, 2 people complained they didn't know they would be going on a boat, so after a lot of moaning one was left shore side, (give me strength) and then we realised that another 2 of the passengers weren't able to walk un aided so it took the combined efforts of the crew ... read more

Geo: 8.99427, -79.5188Monday 30/03/09 At Sea Temps Air 27°C Sea 28°C Around mid day we started to notice the odd green turtle swimming around in the sea, we'd been told in Acapulco that the turtles migrate to beaches all along the coast there every year to lay their eggs, and as the afternoon progressed we passed alongside hundreds of turtles all making their way back to the nesting beaches still some hundreds of miles away. The clouds started to darken after lunch and we expected a passing shower which never materialised, but when we looked over the starboard side there in the distance was a waterspout, you could clearly see the funnel emanating from a massive dark cloud formation on the near horizon down to the sea, what a sight! Other than a strong surge of ... read more

Geo: 15.85, -96.32Sunday 29/03/09 Huatulco - Mexico Temps Air 38°C Sea 25°C Huatulco is the latest resort to be created from scratch by Mexico's tourism agency and consists of nine bays and 36 beaches many of which can only be reached by boat. In an attempt to prevent outside interests building hotels and complexes 70% of the bays and the surrounding areas have been acquired and made into a national park so they'll never be developed. The beaches are pristine and the waters crystal clear, helped by the fact that as a new resort with concerns for environmental issues all waste water is treated before being discharged into the sea. We took a boat journey to view some of the surrounding bays with a stop off at one of the beaches where we took the opportunity ... read more
