Geo: -8.05428, -34.8813Saturday 04/02/12 Parintins, Amazonia, Brazil 32c Hot and overcastI'm having real problems uploading photos to the blog, after 30 minutes it just crashed with nothing uploaded that'd be annoying at home here it's frustrating beyond belief. The maritime internet service is slow and expensive, £200 for 1000 mins and I'm already down to 745 min so uploading photos will probably have to wait until I get home, sorry. This is another tender port which we were told would probably be different to any other we'd experienced as the route from the ship to the quay wouldn't be direct as the river is extremely fast flowing at this time of year and the floating debris and flotsam is amazing, it's not branches, leaves, and grasses but enormous tree trunks some 4-5m long and 30-75cm in diameter ... read more

Geo: -3.10719, -60.0261Saturday 28/01/12 at sea 25c Hot but overcast with a few showers, quitegusty, caused by the trade winds so the Captain tells us. Hopefully it'll calm down soon as I haven't slept well for the last two nights and as a result my back's now playing up with the constant tossing and turning. As a result of not stopping at Georgetown, Guyana we'll now be at sea until Tuesday although Monday we have to dock at Santanna station for the authorities to board and check our passports and more importantly our Yellow Fever vaccinationcertificates. Sunday 29/01/12 at sea 29c Hot but overcast at times Woke this morning to discover the toilets not working, having then spoken to the cabin steward he informed me that the whole deck was effected, oh dear. After breakfast outside ... read more

Geo: 12.1279, -61.68Saturday 21/01/12 At sea 24c hot and sunnyI've just overheard a conversation between a couple of passengers one of which is having to leave the ship at Barbados because she's unable to have the Yellow Fever vaccination for medical reasons, so she's flying back to the UK for 10 days and then flying back to connect up with the ship when we leave Amazonia. I would have thought a better option would have been to fly out to Barbados first (if she specifically wanted to go there) have as long as she wanted there and then join the ship after we leave Amazonia that would have been significantly cheaper and still achieved the same thing, or alternatively get off in Barbados and stay there until she can join the ship after we leave Amazonia. ... read more

Geo: 52.7708, -1.20435Well at long last we're ready, I think, all the necessary things like house insurance renewals which lapse whilst we're away, contact lists in the event of just about everything, and a check list of things to be checked whilst we're away for our house minders AKA Stephen & Michelle have been taken care of.The suitcases are packed, only 5 this time, and thankfully as my medication's been reduced since the last trip I don't need a complete flight case just for my meds. I still have half a flight case full of meds but it leaves room for some of the more important things like wine boxes. Tomorrow morning we catch the coach at Leicester Forest Service station ready for a stress free journey down to Southampton. Friday 13/01/12Well the day's arrived, the ... read more

Geo: 42.0534, 3.1976706/07/11 Sunny 21 oC Today we're returning to our dear friends Chris & Julia in Chatillon-sur-Indre We had decide to play a joke on Julia when we arrived, as nearly every time we visit I have some ailment or another, so after a beautifully relaxing drive through the French countryside (it's not often you can say that these days in England , but we avoid the motorways whenever possible) we pulled up in a lay by some 5Km from their house; where we dressed my arm up in a sling, attached a neck brace, a wine soaked eye patch, and a bandage for my thumb. The drive into the village was interesting with the occasional motorist doing a double take, but as we drove through the village itself we alarmed quite a few of the ... read more

Geo: 42.0534, 3.1976701/07/11 Hot and Sunny 25 oCWell the wind never died down which made the first part of the trip lively but better than expected, and the journey northwards was a treat that was until we were approx 15 mls from our next site, all of a sudden there was a police road block ahead and without any warning the road ahead was blocked. I've had previous experience of the French authority's attitude to deviations / detours, and one thing you can be sure of is there's rarely an alternative route signposted so it's a case of everybody for themselves, which is where sat nav is or can be a real boon.As expected the sat nav quickly replanned an alternative route which was in line with where everybody I was following was going so there ... read more

Geo: 42.0534, 3.1976718/06/11 Hot and Sunny 24 oC19/06/11 Overcast with Sunny spells 22oC We went into the town to view the traditional floral carpet made to celebrate the feast of the corpus, the carpets are made by most of the retailers and children from the local school. The displays are made from flowers, glass beads, and coloured wood chip / shavings, they made a beautiful sight. Fortunately we went early in the morning, because as we started to leave after the judging the wind got up and started to blow some of the carpets away, such a shame.20/06/11 Hot and Sunny 27 oCLes went to the airport to pick up his daughter and two grandchildren, they got back around 15:00 and then Les set about doing his speciality the mega fryup for 5 whilst fag ash ... read more
