After a better night sleep for both of us, we were up and had breakfast in our apartment. We had bought some lovely fruit and yoghurt and also a baguette which we still had some cheese from Rome to eat with. I found the right coffee for the coffee device and heated up some milk to make myself a flat white (the Italians call this cappuccino). We then walked in towards the Duomo as we decided we wanted to at least go inside but at best walk up the Duomo so would see if that was possible. Firstly Janine wanted to sort oit her molbile phone at the Vodafone shop as she wanted to confirm just what she could use. After this we walked to the Duomo and spoke to someone that was selling tickets for ... read more

Janine and I both had a sleep interrupted night but can't explain why! Anyway, regardless we were up and getting sorted as we had our tour of the Tuscan Wine region today. Had a nice breakfast as figured we should ensure we don't join this tour on an empty stomach! We walked to the S M Novella train station to meet up with our group at 10am. There were 8 other people in the tour group so a good number. It was extremely hot today so we weren't happy when we found out the the air conditioning at the back of the mini van wasn't working! And guess who sat on the back seat? Yep, Janine and I - but we only found out it wasn't working after we got into that seat haha. We were ... read more

I woke around around 7:30 this morning so I could spend sometime on updating my blog. By 9 both Janine and I were up and after we had showers etc. we ventured out in search of breakfast. The first couple of places didn't appeal much but the third one seemed to have just what we needed. We both had a half toasted sandwich each with freshly squeezed orange juice. I had a cappuccino and Janine had a black tea. Very nice! We headed back to the apartment to finish packing and then checked out at 11:30am. We walked to the Metro stop near the Colosseum, stopping at the supermarket to pick up a fresh baguette and a bit more prosciutto. It was another hot, hot day today so we took our time. We bought our tickets ... read more

I set my alarm for 8am as that was the time Janine's flight from Melbourne was landing. Showered then headed off to walk to the Termini to meet her - it was hot already at 9am! As I had down the same trip into the city from the airport that Janine was going to do today, I was able tim give her a few tips but also to organize a meeting place, in case we couldn't get in touch. I arrived at about 9:25 and sat near Lush as arranged. I was keeping an eye on the arrival times of the trains from Fiumicino and would then watch for passengers coming off the train. The 9:40 came and went - no Janine. The 9:55 came and went - still no Janine so I decided to get ... read more

Slept in until 9am which I needed as I am still suffering from this damn head cold. The morning was spent enjoying the apartment and to catch up on this blog. I just never found the time to do it when I was visiting people and once you get behind it takes quite an effort to catch up. I had breakfast of cereal and yoghurt with a nice apricot juice. I didn't venture out until well after midday and my first stop was the Colosseum (again!) but this time there were so many people around! From here I walked to the Roman Forum and explored around this area. So amazing. I have memories of both the Colosseum and the Roman Forum from my time on Contiki - a zillion years ago. I can clearly remember the ... read more

Woke at 7:30 this morning to get organised as I needed to walk to the local train station, get a ticket and catch the 8:30 train to Zurich airport. Manuela had already left for work by the time I got up. So grateful that I was able to stay the night at her house and wish it could have been for longer. Got to the train station without it raining and after a bit of hit and miss, I think I bought the right ticket. The train arrived on time and I only had to travel to the next station. From this station I could get a fast train to the airport. I only had a 10 minute wait and then the train arrived. It was about an hour to get to the airport and even ... read more

This morning i was up early to shower, pack and eat some breakfast as Tonz and I are going to pick up Vince & Alison at 9:15am. Before I left, Nina came upstairs with Evi to say goodbye and then I went downstairs to say goodbye to Muma & Pupa. Always sad to say goodbye but hopefully I will see them all agIan in the not too distant future. Our plan today is to pick up a hire car from Köln airport for a road trip to Switzerland! We picked Vince & Alison up pretty much on time and got to the airport around 10am. Tonz dropped us off and we all said farewell. We are all so grateful for everything he did for us. Truly a fabulous host. After a bit of confusion on where ... read more

Panorama of the lake

After a lazy morning Vince & Alison came over so we decided to go for a walk with Tonz around this lovely lake near place. It was very pretty around the lake and you can see why it is a good spot to go walking or jogging. There were a couple of fantastic playgrounds so of course we had to get in amongst it! After this we continued on past the new gym/health spa and then Tonz asked if we wanted to see some deer. Of course we said Yes so we headed off through some bush in search of them. At first it was quite easy going and then we came into this beautiful clearing that was circled by really tall trees. From here the going got tougher and we were walking through some interesting ... read more

Big day planned today so was up and ready. Had coffee and a lovely smoothie Tonz made. He has been living in Germany for such a long time that he sometimes has trouble remembering the English word for something. He was explaining all the items that were in the smoothie - banana, avocado, berries and then he says with mince. I'm like "what..... wait a minute...." until we worked out he was saying Mint but the German words is minze. Haha - all good, there was no raw meat in the smoothie. Tonz went and picked up Vince & Alison and then we all walked to the Strassenbahn Linie 1 (this is the tram). We changed over to the train at Deutz and then got the regional train to Linz. Tonz & Susi had been on ... read more

A bit of a slower start to today due to too much fun being had last night lol. Tonz and I walked into Bergisch Gladbach via the forest that is right near their house. It is such a beautiful place. There had been a huge storm a few months back with hurricane like winds and some of the big, 100 + year old trees had been blown over as well as many of the pine trees. You could see big patches that are now missing trees and there is timber being cut and piled up for removal. Luckily there are still many parts that survived though. Firstly we went to Aldi as I wanted to get a SIM card for my phone. So much cheaper to buy the SIM over here - and within the EU ... read more
