Jess and I hit the shops and the nearby bakery that Ute had taken us to yesterday, to buy food for breakfast. Back at the apartment we prepared everything and had a lovely spread on the table by the time the birthday girl and Ferris and Con joined us. What a lovely way to start the day! After breakfast the four of them went off to browse the nearby markets as they were going to buy some goodies to take to the picnic lunch we were planning in the nearby Luxembourg gardens. I decided to spend some time sorting my stuff out before heading out to explore some of Paris myself. I first headed to the Arabic Uni/Library building that Ute had told us has a great view from the 9th floor and was free to ... read more

Janine decided, given it was our last day in champagne, that we needed to have a champagne breakfast! Both of us were first up so we set up the breakfast table and eventually Peri, Sue and Louise joined us. Once again we had freshly cooked croissants as well as muesli, fruit and yoghurt. We had a coffee pod machine which meant we were able to make our own coffees - yay! We then all started getting ready to leave, which required showers, packing and cleaning up the apartment! Busy busy. It started raining this morning - just when we needed to head to the train! We had decided we all wanted to walk to the train station so the rain made it more interesting. After 20 minutes we arrived all a bit wet! We were scheduled ... read more

This morning Peri, Janine and I walked to the Reims train station to catch a train to Epernay. Unfortunately by the time we worked out the ticketing system we missed the train. One of the best things about travelling without too many time constraints is that you can easily revert to Plan B. We bought tickets for the next train and had about an hour to kill so we walked to the main shopping strip of Reims and spent the time browsing and trying on outfits - and we were none the poorer for the experience lol. Back to the train station with time to jump onto the correct train and we were on our way. The views along the way are a constant 'wow'. As we drew into Epernay station we were all blown away ... read more

Up earlier this morning as we were being picked up by our driver at 9am for our full day Champagne tour. Our driver arrived very promptly - his name is Valentin. He had a very comfortable vehicle for the 5 of us so we settled in for our drive into the country. Tour starts at 9 - our driver Valantine picked us up in his very nice car. We headed towards the area that captures villages such as Verzy, Verzenay and Ludes. Our first stop was at the Champagne house of Hughes Godme. This tour takes us to mostly boutique champagne houses - of which we found out there are around 200 of in this area. The lady we met is married is the owner with her husband and i think we caught her out not ... read more

This morning we are booked into the tour of Taittinger at 11:15am so we all had breakfast together and then spent time getting 5 girls showered and dressed - which is challenging as there is only 1 shower in the apartment. There is a bath with a hand held shower head but the bathroom is the walkway to the bedroom Peri, Sue and Lou are in so that is also interesting! We knew it was about a 30 minute walk so we set off with plenty of time to spare so we could take in the sights along the way. We arrived in time - to find out Janine had booked us on the French speaking tour haha. We were able to rescedule to the 11:45 English speaking tour but we were also aware that would ... read more

We had one of our best breakfasts so far! Love this hotel! Today we have quite the journey ahead of us so i have broken it down into seven stages: 1. Taxi to train station 2. Train to Genoa Brighole 3. Shuttle bus to airport 4. Flight from Genoa to Paris 5. Train to Champagne-Ardenne 6. Train to Reims 7. Find apartment Hotel was fantastic and organized our taxi to the station - it arrived on time at 8:30 and we were at station within 10 mins. Train to Genoa Brignole was due at 8:52 but was running 10 mins late. The schedule had this train arriving at Brignole at 9:20 and the shuttle bus leaving at 9:30 so this was going to be close. We had already accepted that if we didn't make this connection, ... read more

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Santa Margherita Ligure July 15th 2018

Last breakfast on our roof top terrace before checking out and heading to the train station. We were scheduled to get the train at 9:50 to Levanto, where would change for a train to Santa Margherita. Of course our train arrived a few minutes late which meant we need to move quickly at Levanto to ensure we got our connection. We did well and had no problems getting to Santa Margherita. We arrived around 11:10 so decided we would walk the 15 minutes to the hotel, rather than get a taxi. It was actually a very pleasant walk as it was mostly flat, except for the downhill portion coming out of the train station area. The walk took us along the boardwalk of the marina and straight away Janine and I knew we were going to ... read more

Once again we had our breakfast on the rooftop terrace. We left the hotel a bit later than we wanted but we got some washing and stuff done. We caught the train back to Corniglio. We knew from yesterday that there is a massive zigzag staircase from the top of the town to the bottom, where the train station is. Knowing we were going to facing an even more, potentially, challenging day today we opted into getting the shuttle bus to the top! Once in the town we grabbed a lemon granita (me) and orange granita (Janine) before taking some time to look around. We were just too exhausted yesterday to climb anymore stairs so it was nice to have some time today to enjoy the place. Time always seems to get away from us when ... read more

Happy birthday to my sister Clare and nephew Harry! We enjoyed our breakfast this morning, sitting on the roof top terrace of our hotel. We got organized then started our hike to Vernazza. We knew today would be the hardest walk and had decided we would walk to the first town and then spend some time there before heading onto the next town later in the afternoon. We definitely underestimated how hard the walk would be in parts - the first part was just constant steps up for quite a long time! The weather was very hot too, which made it more challenging. There were times when we were walking through forrests and that was quite pleasant - these were the times we managed to chat in a more positive tone ?. There were so many ... read more

We needed to catch a train from S M Novella to Monterosso at 10:28 this morning so we got up, had our breakfast if fruit and yoghurt then packed and cleaned up the apartment. We needed to face the challenge of getting our bags all the way down the very steep stairs - all 4 flights of them. We both first took our big bags down to the bottle then came back upstairs for the final things. We considered this effort to also be good training for our Cinque Terre trek. We got to the station with plenty of time to spare and then did the whole 'stare at the board until a platform number appears beside your train and then rush to that platform' game. Sure enough, as soon as the number appeared the crowd ... read more
