Up early to have breakfast and finish packing. There is a bus that leaves from very near to my hotel so I planned to get the one that left at 9:15. All good - you just pay the driver €2.80 and you're off. The bus arrived at the Central Train station about 15 minutes later so I had plenty of time to find my platform and where I needed to be standing before the train departed at 9:59. The train journey took 5 hours but it was very pleasant and a good way to see some more of the countryside. I arrived at Köln station just after 3pm and followed the instructions my cousin Tony (or Tonz as he is known to us!) to the platform for a train to Bergisch Gladbach. I missed one step ... read more

I was determined to make the most of today, as it is my last full day in Berlin. Last night I booked myself on the 9am slot for the Berlin Tower so I was up at 7 to make sure I had time to shower and have breakfast before leaving the hotel to walk there. Wow - so glad I did! It was a beautiful, crisp and clear day so was perfect to shoot 368m into the air to check out the whole city. To give you an idea of the height, the Sydney Tower is only 309m. This was a perfect way to see the old and the new buildings and how the city has certainly rebuilt itself since the war. I spent just over 50 mins up the tower and needed to keep moving ... read more

There are a few things that become important when you travel - wifi and coffee! Without good quality, you will find both can be frustrating. i am going to add a rating on both these items, for each country/city I visit. So, to catch up: Stockholm and Malmö, Sweden - excellent coffee everywhere. Internet free and available at most places. Quality was good in my hotel. Copenhagen, Denmark - excellent coffee everywhere. Internet free and available at most places. Quality was good in my hotel. Hamburg and Berlin, Germany - coffee is only average. Internet available intermittently. Doesn't work very well in my hotel room hence I find myself sitting in the lobby when I need to do my blog. Main reason for introducing a rating system ?. It is not only annoying but quite time ... read more

After enjoying a nice breakfast in my hotel, it was time to walk to Alexanderplatz to join up with the walking tour I had booked. I had decided to do the 'Off the Beaten Track' which is a four hour walking tour that I hoped would take me to places I didn't know about or would find on my own. Our walk started with a short train ride to Mitte where our small group of 9 got to hear all about how this area was impacted during WWII. Our guide was from Edinburgh in Scotland but has lived in Berlin for the past 8 years. He is a graffiti artist but also makes music. It seems that there are many people in Berlin with these skills and this is due, in a big part, to the ... read more

Christiane (the hostess with the mostest!) popped out before I woke up to buy some traditional Hamburg pastries and coffees for our breakfast. She also bought some bread rolls and made them up for my trip, with liverwurst, ham and pickles etc left over from the other night. We had a lovely breakfast together and then said our farewells - until next we meet ? I then took my time getting organised and went for a walk to the lake. It was another beautiful day in Hamburg! I walked past the Hamburg tennis centre which was huge - this is where they have the German open. It is on Christiane's street. Christiane's apartment is in what was the Jewish quarter of Hamburg. The places here are just amazing - I love the architecture and how beautifully ... read more

Today is going to be a better day! Got up early so I could travel into the city with Christiane. First we went to her office building and went to the 14th floor to see the views over the city. We then headed to Cafe Paris which is a very beautiful cafe in the heart of the city. We had a very nice breakfast with more food than I could eat, so did the old traveller trick of putting some cheese into the croissant and wrapping it up for later. Christiane headed off to work and I walked around the Town Hall (Rathaus), which is a very impressive building. From here I jumped on the HopOn HopOff bus to get my bearings of the city. Hamburg has these two beautiful lakes and this tour went all ... read more

After waking and getting myself sorted for the day, I walked to Nyhavn for breakfast. I stopped to take a photo of #20, which was the house that Hans Christian Andersen lived in. After a nice breakfast of eggs & bacon, I continued my walk to enjoy some of the final sights of Copenhagen. The time soon came to check out of my hotel and head to the Central Train station for my trip to Hamburg. The journey started off nicely with my seat not actually on the window, but I could see the view of the countryside fully, without interruption this time. After about 2 hours I needed to change trains at Fredericia, which is a town in Denmark. As we were getting close to the station, an announcement advised us that the train to ... read more

After a slow start this morning, I decided to walk the 2kms to where the Hop On - Hop Off bus for the Carslberg Tour started from. I needed to be there by 12 but also needed to get a coffee and something to eat. Made it with 2 mins to spare! It was great to see another part of the city of Copenhagen. They really have done amazing things to reduce their carbon footprint - nearly everyone rides bikes everywhere. They have the lowest number of cars on the road than any other city. When you see how seriously people here and in Sweden care about waste and the environment, it really puts us in Australia to shame. I feel like we could be doing so, so much more. I got off the bus at ... read more

After reading up on the best things to do in Copenhagen I was excited to start the day. I walked over the Inderhavnsboen onto the island of Christianshavn. I found a market area and bought some porridge with almonds, apple and caramel for breakfast. From here I walked to the Freetown of Christiania. This area was settled by squatters in 1971 and has drawn non-conformists from across the globe who were attracted to the concept of collective businesses and communal living. It certainly was an interesting place to walk around with its artistic graffiti and dealers on "pusher street" - it was like stepping into another world. It considers itself to not be a part of the EU. Stepping back into civilisation as we know it .... I decided to head to the spot I had ... read more

After a great breakfast at the Scandic Hotel I was ready to explore the town whilst at the same time tracking down some of the buildings and main features from the TV series 'The Bridge'. First on my agenda was to find the building that was the police station in the show. This mission took me on a 20 minute walk through the town but I was able to find it, after ducking for cover when the rain came pounding down! After this rain shower the skies cleared and it was a beautiful day. After taking a few photos I headed back to the old town to check out of the hotel. I left my luggage in storage and my next mission was to walk to the Strand Hotel where Saga (the main female character) stayed ... read more
