Christiane (the hostess with the mostest!) popped out before I woke up to buy some traditional Hamburg pastries and coffees for our breakfast. She also bought some bread rolls and made them up for my trip, with liverwurst, ham and pickles etc left over from the other night. We had a lovely breakfast together and then said our farewells - until next we meet ?
I then took my time getting organised and went for a walk to the lake. It was another beautiful day in Hamburg! I walked past the Hamburg tennis centre which was huge - this is where they have the German open. It is on Christiane's street. Christiane's apartment is in what was the Jewish quarter of Hamburg. The places here are just amazing - I love the architecture and how beautifully kept everything is. Outside every building there are little golden plaques with the names of the Jewish residents that were taken away and never seen again. That's what I love about Germany - they don't shy away from their history but believe in honoring the wrongs.
After my little outing this morning it was time to make my way to Central Station. I
caught the train from Christiane's place to Central without any problems and made sure I gave myself ample time to find the platform. Thank goodness there were no issues with this train connection. It arrived and departed on time and I was able to find my seat without any problem. The only issue I had was trying to lift my suitcase over my head to place it on the luggage rack but thankfully people offered to help. There was a young girl and two guys in the same compartment as me - I found it interesting that the young girl offered to help before either guy.
After a very pleasant two hour journey, I arrived in a Berlin Central Station. I knew it would be a good 45 min walk to my hotel so not wanting the same experience as Copenhagen, I headed out to get a taxi. Wow, that is a dog eat dog world! Eventually I got a cab but not before the driver advised me the city centre was chaotic due to the football match that was to start soon. Germany were playing South Korea in their do or die match. The traffic was crazy but
I think my driver may just have been crazier! Anyway, I arrived at the Art'otel in Mitte in one piece, in time to check into my room and switch the TV on. Oh dear.......... not the result Germany was hoping for.
I headed out to explore and walked to Alexanderplatz. I found an Italian restaurant along the way so had a nice dinner before heading to the square to check out the action. There was a lot going on but I found a seat in a bar on the square so I could have a beer and watch the action. Feeling a bit tired - I would like to say ''from the travel" but if I'm being honest, it was from the night out last night - I eventually headed back to the hotel to enjoy the comforts of my room.
