After a slow start this morning, I decided to walk the 2kms to where the Hop On - Hop Off bus for the Carslberg Tour started from. I needed to be there by 12 but also needed to get a coffee and something to eat. Made it with 2 mins to spare!
It was great to see another part of the city of Copenhagen. They really have done amazing things to reduce their carbon footprint - nearly everyone rides bikes everywhere. They have the lowest number of cars on the road than any other city. When you see how seriously people here and in Sweden care about waste and the environment, it really puts us in Australia to shame. I feel like we could be doing so, so much more.
I got off the bus at the Carlsberg brewery stop and walked for 10 minutes to the venue. Such a beautiful area and well maintained old buildings. I decided not to do the tour but to purchase a beer instead and enjoy the atmosphere of the venue. i thought it a good idea to take a selfie with the 2 Carlsberg horses with a Carlsberg beer in my hand
when the next thing you know, one of the horses decided to attempt to drink my beer! I was actually taking the photo when I could feel its hot breath on the back of my neck - and managed to also take a photo of the look of surprise on my face!
After finishing my beer and taking a look around, I walked back to get the next bus to finish off the circuit. I then joined the Christiania Tour bus and got to see and hear about more places around the city. I decided to get off at Reffen - this is a street food venue situated in the middle of the industrial area but right on the water. It's actually across the water from the Little Mermaid. What a cool and trendy place this was! Every shop was in a shipping container. I enjoyed a nice pork gyros with a icy cold beer which was complimentary with the HopOn-HopOff ticket (the beer that is). I certainly got my monies worth on this ticket!
Today was a beautiful sunny and warm day. A nice change from the weather at the start of the trip. After a while
Welcome to Reffen
Notice that the bars open 1 hour before the food and stay open 1 hour after the food shuts. I headed back to the bus stop only to see the bus already heading off. I knew it was going to be another 30 minute wait so I decided to walk instead. Normally when I walk at home I need to be very aware of the cars but over here you really need to be aware of the bikes! Just when you think it's safe to cross the street and you've checked for cars, there is another lane for the bikes! I saw so many tourists nearly get cleaned up because they stepped right in front of a bike or 6.
The walk was very pleasant because for most of the way I was near the water. I decided to head to Christians Kirke which is a beautiful old church that has the most amazing spire. For 50 Danish Kroner you can walk the 400 steps to the top - which of course I did! Wow, what a view over the city. I hope these photos give you a sense of what it was like.
I walked back to my hotel for a little r&r and to get myself organised for tomorrow as I am heading off to
Hamburg, Germany. Once I was sorted and had the ticket for the train printed, I walked over the bridge to this outdoor area which had food stalls and bars. Everyone was out enjoying the beautiful weather. I had Singaporean Ribs with a coleslaw and a nice glass of rosé to wash it down. On the way back to my hotel, I just had to try the 'handmade 70% organic' ice cream that I had walked past every day I was here, resisting until the end! I had the chili chocolate and pomegranate sorbet. Delicious and a nice way to end my day.
