After a great breakfast at the Scandic Hotel I was ready to explore the town whilst at the same time tracking down some of the buildings and main features from the TV series 'The Bridge'. First on my agenda was to find the building that was the police station in the show. This mission took me on a 20 minute walk through the town but I was able to find it, after ducking for cover when the rain came pounding down! After this rain shower the skies cleared and it was a beautiful day. After taking a few photos I headed back to the old town to check out of the hotel.
I left my luggage in storage and my next mission was to walk to the Strand Hotel where Saga (the main female character) stayed for a 'break'. The reason for heading here was also because I knew it was on the coast and that I would get good views of The Bridge (Øresund) where the body was found in the first series, on the border of Sweden & Denmark. Turns out this was a very big walk - probably close to 7kms - but it was along the
coast so was a really lovely way to see the area. It took me around 2 hours as I ventured out onto different jetties to see the views along the way. In the end I was very happy with this decision as I got some stunning photos of the Bridge.
I needed to get back to Malmö to get the train to Copenhagen so decided to jump on a local bus that was heading to Central. I tried to pay the driver but he figured it was all too hard and let me on the bus for free. Once back at the hotel, I grabbed my bags and headed to the station. With a little help from a lovely lady, i bought my ticket, grabbed a salad and headed to the platform. I wasn't 100% sure about which train to get, as there seemed to be some problem with the fast train but jumped on the next one that came and ended up in Copenhagen Central, so all good!
After trying to work out how best to get to my hotel from the station, and seeing the very long taxi line with no taxi's, I made the decision
to walk the 30 minutes to the hotel. A 30 min walk for me is nothing but with my suitcase on cobbled streets, it was a different story! By the time I got to the hotel I was 'hot and bothered'. The Copenhagen Strand Hotel is really lovely and I am so happy with the room I booked as it has amazing views from my windows over the water.
After settling in I decided to head off and have a glass of wine on the water. There is a cute bar right next door to the hotel - very convenient! I then wandered along the waterways to Nyhavn which is the amazing little strip along the canal with all the multi-colored buildings containing restaurants and bars. Stunning! This is where Hans Christian Andersen lived and I am sure I will find out more about its history
Such a great atmosphere tonight as it is the first day of the midsummer weekend, today being a public holiday. People dressed up in costumes and everyone is out celebrating. It is legal to drink on the streets and I noticed most restaurants advertising drinks as 'take away', especially Aperol Spritz!
I settled myself at a table in one of the restaurants and had moules & frits for dinner - as well as an Aperol Spritz! So much fun people watching - it is one of my favourite pastimes when travelling. There was this crazy band playing all sorts of songs that make people stop and dance, right out the front of the restaurant I was in. I stayed for several hours enjoying being a fly on the wall.
