Up earlier this morning as tour starts at 8am, so I was downstairs for breakfast at 7. Today's tour will have a lot my traveling time, as we cover a fair distance heading down the south coast. Our first destination was Reynisfjara, the Black Sand beach. At either end of the beach are the enormous basalt stacks. According to local Icelandic folklore, these columns were once trolls trying to pull ships from the ocean to shore, however they were dim and went out too late in the night so when dawn broke on the horizon they were turned into solid stone. So mesmerizing are these features, they were featured in Game of Thrones; they are in some of the scenes 'North of the Wall'. The sea stacks are home to thousands of nesting seabirds, including the ... read more

7pm wake up. Breakfast downstairs (porridge juice fruit) 9am pick up for tour, drive around the city picking up others. Only a small group - 16 people. Our first stop was Pingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park - this is where the tetonic plates of Europe and America are visible and you can stand with one foot in each continent! Absolutely stunning landscape and I will let the photos do the talking. Of course I did manage to shimmy into a crevice and can now say I was in two continents at the same time! This is also where the largest freshwater lake in Europe is - Thingvallavatn Lake. It is 83 square kms and 114 m deep. You can also dive here along the split between the 2 continents. Our next stop was in the Geyser Hot ... read more

How sad - it is our last day on this amazing ship. It took me a while to find my mojo on this luxury cruise ship but eventually I found like minded people and that makes all the difference. This morning we were awoken as we pulled into port at 6:30am in Reykjavik. I got up and started getting myself organised to disembark. Breakfast was delivered for the final time to my suite and I said my farewell to Sonal. By 8 I had checked out and collected the video/photo package I had purchased and then I waited for Barbara on Deck 5. Barbara had organised a taxi to collect her and she was going to give me a lift. She could only give me a lift to her hotel and once we now had good ... read more

Ordered in breakfast again today, as I needed to be ready to leave for my Sudureyri Food Trail tour this morning at 8:15am. At 6:30 this morning the ship docked in Ísafjödur so that tends to be your wake up call - if you do manage to sleep through this then usually Skulk will be on the loudspeaker around 7am to announce we have docked and to get everyone up and moving. Ísafjödur Is the largest town in the Westfjords peninsula, with some 2,600 inhabitants. The old town has wooden houses with corrugated tin roofs, built by fishing merchants in the 18th and 19th centuries. The growth of the town was triggered by salt fish production and ever since then the fishing industry has been vital for the community. The town is surrounded by rugged and ... read more

This morning the ship docked in Akureyri at 7am and I needed to be ready to head off on my tour, Taste of Akureyri, at 8am so I ordered breakfast to be delivered to my room whilst I got ready. Today we disembarked onto a dock, which was something new! It was cold and raining in Akureyri but we were quickly moved onto our bus for the tour. Our guide was a local person and was very knowledgeable but also hilarious! As we drove along the Fjord he explained to us what life was like living in Iceland and in particular, this very northwestern part of the island. We stopped off at a village that was at the end of the fjord so that we could take photos looking back towards Akureyri. Stunning! We then drive ... read more

This morning we were still at sea in our way to Grímsey Island so I went to La Terrazza for the buffet breakfast. After breakfast I headed to the mud room to collect my boots as they needed to be returned this morning. This means we will no longer have any wet landings. We arrived at Grímsey Island at 11:30am. Grímsey is the northernmost inhabited Icelandic territory. It is a tiny, charming island which is approximately 5km in size. Grímsey is a popular destination as the Arctic Circle crosses through it, so today we have sailed from the Arctic Circle and crossed the line but will have the opportunity to then walk back over the Arctic Circle on this island! After a light lunch on board (trying to cut down!) we were scheduled to head ashore ... read more

Europe » Norway » Northern Norway August 4th 2018

This morning our ship anchored at Jan Mayen island at 7:30am. Jan Mayen is situated at 71 degrees north and 8 degrees west. This stunning volcanic island in the Arctic Ocean is the most isolated island of Norway, even though it sits much closer to Greenland than Norway. It also contains the countries most active volcano. It is situated 550km north-east of Iceland and 500km east of Greenland. It is 53km long and 13km wide at its widest point. The volcano is named Beerenberg and is 2277 meters high and glacier covered - it is the world's northernmost volcano above sea level and Norway's only active volcano. As recently as 1985 there was an eruption and there is a constant threat of new eruptions and earthquakes - yay! The island is now home to an active ... read more

A day at sea means - no wake up call and nowhere to be at any particular time. Oh, except if you want breakfast the last sitting is 10am, so I made sure I got up in time for that. We also put our clocks back one hour so that gave us even more time to sleep. I met up with David and some of his friends for breakfast so it was a leisurely time. After breakfast I headed to Deck 9 to walk and listen to my podcasts. I was probably up there walking for almost an hour and half. When I first started I was the only crazy out in the windy cold weather but over the time I was joined by others. On the way back to my cabin I had a bowl ... read more

Around 8 am our ship arrived at Poolepynten - a wide, flat peninsula on the eastern side of Prins Karis Forland, the long narrow island off Spitsbergen's west coast. On arrival we received a message over the sound system advising that there were indeed Walruses on the beach! Passengers were taken ashore in their colour groups - there are 6 in total and unfortunately I am in Pink, which was the last in the list. This meant, however, that I didn't have to rush to get ready today and made my way to breakfast around 9:30am. After breakfast I headed to Deck 9 to walk some laps, whilst listening to my podcast and checking out the activities on the water, including the landing. Using my Nikon zoom lens I could actually see the group of Walruses ... read more

Around 7:30 this morning the Silver Cloud anchored off Smeerenburg (which means blubber town). This landing spot is a know walrus haul out so we were hoping to see them today, however when Skulk announced our arrival he also advised that the Walruses were not there. I was scheduled for a 9:30 zodiac landing so decided to have a quick breakfast beforehand in the La Terrazzo restaurant. Smeerenburg is situated on the island of Armsterdamøya and is surrounded by fjords, tall glacier fronts and steep, rugged mountains. Even though there were no Walruses, which was disappointing, it was still nice to come ashore and walk around for a while. As always, we needed to stay with our group and we have a guide and bear guards with us. Vik was our guide and she told us ... read more
