A quieter day we thought. A nice wander around Sydney to see all the sights do some shopping and generally get to know the place. Well it again it was cold windy and wet with lots of heavy showers. Anyway we had to go and see the city and perhaps even attempt some geocaches. To be honest we really enjoyed the day. Sydney is a really nice place to see. It is quite compact and very easy to walk around. We left the hotel and walked through Hyde Park with its Anzac memorial and down Macqarie Street towards the Opera House. Because it had been recommended we decided to go across to Manly on the river ferry. Now we do believe that Manly is a very nice place but not when it is blowing a gale. ... read more

We awoke this morning not having slept very well - probably because of jet lag and concern about our all day tour of the Blue Mountain and River Cruise. What did we see when we opened the curtains this morning - wind and rain - it was like this for the whole of our visit to Sydney. The locals were telling us that they were having the coldest October for many years. The tour guide on our coach even told us that we likely to encounter some SNOW on our trip today. Would you belive it - SNOW. We had to remind ourselves that this is actually Australia the land of the great outdoors. Anyway onto the trip. We have to set it right from the onset that this tour is the best we have ever ... read more

The overnight flight was OK and l survived Nancy’s wrath at another long 8 hour flight. We did not sleep very well but for no particular reason. On arrival at Sydney airport we met up the staff of the most badly organised airport we have ever met. Immigration was fine until we met up with the food police. Australia is apparently paranoid about importing disease. You are not allowed to bring in any food, animal or plant materials, and the Immigration people are very willing to impose heavy fines for those that break the rules. The checks created absolute chaos with no organisation to get through customs. It was every tourist for themselves, no lines or channels to go through. Every suitcase was checked and people were getting very angry. Anyway we managed eventually get into ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island » Wan Chai October 23rd 2008

After a very disturbed night - that is all we are going to say - we eventually got out of bed at 12 noon which was a real shame l as we had such a lot of things we wanted to do. We decided the take it really easy as l did not feel able to venture very far. We spent the afternoon trying to complete a couple geocaches. This proved quite difficult as the huge skyscrapers made it almost impossible to get a consistent signal. We did manage one but the second was impossible as the bearings kept changing. Turning to our last day in Hong Kong. Because we were not flying until the late evening we decided we should make every last second of our stay in Hong Kong. By the way Nancy kept ... read more

Hi everybody. Woke up today after a good night's sleep - aided by of course - a good evening the night before. We know that we do go on a lot about our drinking habits but what else this there to do - and tell you about. Anyway l woke up and opened the window to our first view of Hong Kong. The view was of a lot of very high rise buildings and a group of local Chinese doing their Tai Chi excercises down below. It was really relaxing to watch but that was as far it went. Today we had organised an excursion. There was no time for breakfast as we had to at a different hotel for 8.15. By the by - did you know that all tour guides in Hong Kong are ... read more

Hi Everyone Can l begin by asking your indulgence. Forgive any obvious spelling mistakes or the lack of good grammar but l am working under harsh circumtances - on the 25th Floor of the City Garden Hotel in downtown Wan Chi on Hongkong Island. That enough of the orientation (sorry about that pun - as l am still sober). Anyway. Can l begin by giving those interested a little geography of the route we took to get here (apart that is of persauding Nancy to come that is). We left Newcastle at a very civilised time at 17.50 via London Heathrow Terminal 5 over flying directly over Copenhagen, Riga, Moscow, Siberia and south through China to Hong Kong arriving through 7 time zones at 16.00 hours. Nancy and l were both concerned about our baggage going ... read more

After a long discussion over a nice cup of tea in the bar we decided to go ahead and visit Mount Vernon. For those interested they have a website mountvernon.org. Mount Vernon, George and Martha Washington's mansion and farm lies some 2 hours up I95 and close to Washington. Mount Vernon stands as a monument to its builder George and is situated on a commanding hillside overlooking the Potomac River and the low Maryland hills. The hilltop is crowned with trees, alongside the wide sweep of the river. The wooded shores beyond present a view of unchanged beauty. Like Monticello you have plenty of opportunites to take tours of the house, gardens and farm. Not as well organised but Mount Vernon is well worth a visit. Among the many exhibits there they have an orginal key ... read more

Before l go onto todays blog l must offer an apologise. I have it on higher authority (thats Nancy) that what l described yesterday as a possum was actually a raccoo. Now l can't say for sure whether his name was Rocky. Now l sure you would agree that there aint much difference between a possum and a raccoon - but what l know. Anyway today Tuesday has turned out to be a wet day - but still hot and sticky. Today we went clear across the state and travelled on US13 road which took us on the longest Bridge/Tunnel system www.cbbt.com) in the world. This crosses Chesapeake Bay to the Delmarva Pensinsula - so called because its shared by Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. Across the bridge we find not a lot, apart from lots and ... read more

Monday morning - Must be time for breakfast with Martha Washington - of course she is the real person and wife of George Washington. Anyway we turn up at the Bar and Grill for breakfast at 8.15 am and sit down to a full English breakfast with lots of grits and things. We are then joined by Martha who tells us (in context) all about life in the 1770s. Their lifestyle, their living conditions etc. etc. After we have had a hearty breakfast we go back to Colonial Williamsburg. Yes l know that this is our 3rd visit but believe me there is so much to do and see. Its just the whole atmosphere of the place - the people who are really interesting to speak to. Its wall-to-wall history and you cannot help but to ... read more

I know l keeping saying this but we must have a day off sometime. But NOT today!! Its Busch Gardens day. We have had to go today because it is only open Friday, Saturday and Sunday. So todays the day. Anyway - this Busch Gardens is rather smaller than Tampa but nevertheless good. Nancy says it was absolutely fabulous, the rides were really, really good but unfortunately River Rapids was closed so we could not get really, really wet. There were other water rides but they were not wet enough for us on such a hot day. We eventually got back to the department (sic) at 8.30 pm just in time for a meal and another drink. Not quite as many bottles this time but l am working on it. ... read more
