Hi Before l begin todays instalment Nancy has asked me to tell you about a lady we met when we at the Shotover River in Queenstown. We met this elderly English lady who was travelling the world with her husband before going to Australia at Christmas to celebrate her 80th birthday with relatives. This lady told us that she is also on a SKIng (Spending the Kids Inheritence) holiday and has been out of the country for three months. She is currently living in Scarborough and is a relative of my old Dentist in Carlisle. Anyway back to this diary On leaving Wanaka we drove to Franz Josef a total of 433kms over a lots of mountain passes and the Haast Pass. Because we stopped so many times to go walking at various places this took ... read more

Our holiday park in Wanaka was sited about 2.0kms from the main township. On another sunny but fresh day we went for a very nice walk which allowed us to find a couple of geocaches on the way. The walk was right beside Lake Wanaka which has the most brilliant blue/turqoise coloured water. Nancy assures me that it was a bit on the cold side. Any way we decided that we would walk into the township and have a meal, but after the previous walk we decided to take a taxi there and a taxi back. I think the best aspect of this country park was that Nancy could sit in her chair and watch and listen to the birds singing. Nancy would have sat there for hours but we have things to do and places ... read more

Tena koutou (Hello) Can l just say l fully intended to have a go at Bungy Jumping in Queenstown yesterday but do you know something it was too windy. And if you believe that you will believe anything. No instead we decided to go on the Shotover (we like that name) River Jetboating trip. It was absolutely awesome, especially the 360 turns we did just went we thought we would hit the canyon wall. It was a really sunny day (we even had to put suntan lotion on) and the water was freezing, especially felt because l was sitting on the side of the boat that took in all the water. Anyway it was a brilliant day. The holiday park we stayed on in Queenstown was right beside a primary school, which unlike a lot our ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Queenstown October 30th 2008

We arrived in Queenstown New Zealand's adrenaline- activity capital in morning. I would tell what the day is but we seem to have lost track. Anyway Queenstown is the size of a small town but with the restlessness of a city. There would appear to be a lot to do here - countless bungy jumping centres, caving, rafting, jet boating and sky diving etc. It reminds us a little of Keswick. Nestled on the shores of scenic Lake Wakatipu with its towering snow covered peaks of The Remarkables as a backdrop, Queenstown appears a good to stay just a little longer and recharge our batteries. That did work. Nancy and l decided that we would just go out and have a wander about (there are a lot shops in Queenstown and even a few shoe shops). ... read more

No matter how many photos you're seen of Milford Sound, nothing can prepare you for the incredible feeling of actually being there. It is an inspiring and exceptional place. The fact that it was pouring with rain did nothing to change things. The fact it was so wet was positive because when you are so close to the sheer wall of the mountains with its thousands of waterfalls (l do not exagarate) that shower you and the ship we were on it was truly magical. Crusing beneath the fiords towering cliffs is an unforgettable experience. We were so close to the waterfalls that water soaked the foredeck and us. Apparently in Maori legend the fiords were created not by rivers of ice, but by Tu Te Raki, a godly figure who came wielding a magical adze ... read more

Hi Folk We do hope you were able to pick up the photos from the last entry. By the way Tom we are still waiting to hear from you!! We were talking the other day about Christchurch being so English. Well Oamaru might not be as glamourous as Christchurch but it as English, well English as it used to be, down to the playing of crocquet lawn in middle of gorgeous public gardens. I don't know what it is but l can't seen to prise Nancy away from the flowers. I suppose l do understand, it is not often you get to see Spring flowers at the end of October. In the evening I managed to prise Nancy away long enough to go and see the penguins come ashore just after dusk. We were told that ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Christchurch October 25th 2008

What a long night it can be if you don't sleep very well. Waking about 02.30 hours is something which happens when you go to bed too early. It sounds like New Zealand has similiar problems to us as regards boy racers. It didn't actually disturb me but you could hear the typical noises in the far distance. Nancy tried out the shower this morning only to find out afterwards that the waste water was running down the road from under the van. We eventually decided that we should take the van back to the depot while we were still in the area, and get it fixed. The depot took a look and found that they had not emptied the waste water tank after the last rental and it was actually overflowing. On a far more ... read more

Our first view of New Zealand today was on the Southern Alps from a clear sky at 20,000 feet. The tops were covered in snow and Nancy said this was 3 wow view. Nancy was really impressed and we had not even landed yet. Its seems that the New Zealand food police are obsessed about keeping out bugs and diseases as the Australians. But they do more pleasantly. Anyway we found our Motorhome without problem. We were shown around the home we were going to live in for the next four weeks and Nancy's first impression were not entirely positive. They are smaller than you imagine and where do you put everything? We will sort it out very quickly. Our first impressions of Christchurch where we are going to be for a couple of the days ... read more
