After a short drive from Taupo to Rotorua we found that it is not actually as smelly as we imagined. However this place is truly magical. You walk along the street, and where we have drains where all our rainwater goes down, here they have drains where the water comes up. To be precise the water that comes up is actually boling with lots of steam everwhere. It is really strange when you come across a crack in the middle of the road with a fine cloud of steam coming out. Roturua is a really eerie sort of place. We found 3 caches here in a local park. If you can imagine a large sports field with a bushed area around the perimiter. Within these bushed areas you have parts sectioned off with fences. Within these ... read more

I am in real doodoo today. Last night we decided that because of our long day yesterday we would have a quieter day today not least because we were going on an organised Maori evening tonight. It all started very well with a nice leisurely breakfast and discussion about which cache we would go and find. There was one on a track which would take us towards Huka Falls which is on the Waikato River. For interest this river actually flows out of Lake Taupo. We had decided that because this cache was about half way to the Falls we would return back to the Holiday Park. As the day turned out it was a very warm and sunny day which reinforced the idea that we should not walk too far. All went well until we ... read more

Well it must be getting warmer Nancy has discarded her coat. To be honest its been a lot warmer since we arrived on North Island but Nancy has not been completely confident enough to leave her coat at home. You will know of course that Lake Taupo is the largest lake in Australasia and is surrounded by stunning volcanos and bush clad mountains It was created by the worlds biggest volcanic eruption a few thousand years ago and created a lake into which (the local are always keen to tell you) the state of Singapore will fit in One and quarter times. For those of you interested in Lord of the Rings the biggest mountain seen from Taupo is the source of Mount Doom (l think that is how it is spelt). I am sure that ... read more

Continuing Where was l when l interrupted by Nancy. I remember - we had found this cache in Clive Square and along with the instructions about how to find the cache was also information about the square itself. In particular it told us about the local gardener whose name we found out was Kyle. He obviously knew about the cache and wasn't surprised to see people walking around with a GPS. Kyle was a font of knowledge about the square and he and Nancy had a long conversation about the exotic plants he was tending. The square also had a sort of chime, bell sort of thing which used to play 4 tunes every 30 minutes and included Greesleaves and Faere Jacque (my French has never been any good). It was obvious to us that Kyle ... read more

There are some thing you always have to do, even on holiday in paradise. Thats Right - the washing. Because we had been travelling for two weeks we decided (well Nancy did) to do some washing and cleaning of the van. The facilites on these Parks are first class - lots of washing machines and drying. All done and dusted in very short time. Time to walk into Napier the Art Deco capital of the world. This building desgn all happened of course following the Magnitude 7 earthquake of February 1931 when some 157 people lost their lives. The city which stands on the East coast of New Zealand's North Island and Hawkes Bay. On our one full day in Napier manged to pack in a lot of activities. We went on our customary long walks ... read more

Welcome to the scond Chapter of our diary to New Zealand. Would you believe that we got lost (even with John Cleese help) going from the Holiday park in Picton to the Ferry Port a distance of about 500 metres. Well we did - l blamed Nancy for taking the wrong turn but never mind we got there and managed to get onto the ferry without problem. On the wonderfully scenic crossing to Wellington we decided (in total agreement) to have another big Kiwi breakfast and just watch the world past us by along the Queen Charlotte Sound and across the Cook Strait and into a nice sunny day in Wellington. Because our Holiday Park in Wellington was some 15 kms outside the city, and we were only there 1 night we did not actually go ... read more

Hello Carrying on from we left off last time. We left Pohara Beach and its wonderfrul warm sunshine (sorry my sense of humour does get me, or should, get me, carried away - or should) and tackled Takaka Hill again. I have to say that Nancy does manage these windy mountain passes much better than l do. Anyway we were managing very well until we came to some unexpected roadworks when they was such a clatter from inside the van - we had shut the kitchen drawer but forget to lock it - almost everything had come out of the cupboard. Thankfully nothing was broken and would you belive it we have never done it again since. It was 10.30 and time for a big Kiwi breakfast (Nancy's idea - honest). We stopped at the Red ... read more

G'day folks I think l really really spoilt Nancy's Holiday yesterday. I left her absolutely devastated. So what cruel and inhumane crime did l commit? I forced Nancy to walk on sand!!!. Anybody that knows Nancy will understand this - she just hates doing it. The fact that the sand was on the beach which was just feet away from the van and the sun was really shining did nothing to encourage her. Anyway she survived - just. While we on the beach we decided that we should 'bite the bullet' and go for a long walk. While we were walking we just happened to come across a small stream which was trickling into the sea. Nancy managed to transverse some stones and make it across without problem. Me being a clever **** decided that l ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Greymouth November 5th 2008

I was planning to tell the diary all about our wonderful stay in the beautiful city of Greymouth but Greymouth was as grey as its name. It simply rained all the way from Franz Josef to Greymouth and continued overnight with the addition of a very strong wind. The van really rocked during the night but that is perhaps another story. I am sure that Greymouth is a really nice place but all we saw was the supermarket and the local restaurant - The Australian. Don't ask me how it got its name - nobody could tell me. One strange (to us)thing about Public Houses over here is that they all have a bookies attached to them with a few television sets showing all kinds of sports and up to a dozen one armed bandits. They ... read more

Hello Again before l begin Nancy has reminded me to tell you about a man we met a few days ago in Te Anau. We met this man while we having a drink in The Moose. This man was really upset because the Hotel he was staying at had stopped serving drinks at 9 pm and he to go out and find another place. This would not happen at the Pinegrove would it Ann. Anyway the really interesting thing about this guy is that is had a huge moustache and came from Frizington - where ever that is. Anyway back to the diary. After our overnight stay in Franz Josef which incidently is on the West Coast (that is the very wet West Coast) we set off to Greymouth. On our way we decided to stop ... read more
