Geo: -33.4691, -70.642Today was a long day. It started in Sydney at 6am when we woke and then caught the shuttle bus to the International Terminal at 7-10am. After check-in and customs etc we had an hour in the Qantas Lounge before boarding our Lan Chile flight. We were away right on time at 9-30am and had an uneventful 2 and a half hour flight to Auckland.Transitting there was ridiculous as as soon as we were off the plane we had to queue to go through a security check again before being allowed into the departure hall. They only had one screening station opened at first so it took ages and was in a very awkward position so people were queued up over the main passageway.Once through there we had a half hour in the Qantas ... read more

Geo: -33.8671, 151.207Our first move on this journey was to travel to Sydney. Our plane leaves tomorrow morning at 9-30 but with check in times etc we could not fly from Adelaide early enough. So we headed to Sydney today. The trip started inauspiciously with difficulties with the taxi. I rang at 12pm and told the dispatcher that we needed a taxi straight away and that our plane was due to leave at 1-25pm. The last couple of times I had ordered a taxi it had come within 5 minutes. This time, after 20 minutes I rang again and "Wayne" the dispatcher told me he had booked the cab for 1-25pm! After I explained again the taxi came 10 minutes later but then it took 30 minutes to get to the airport (even though the cabbie was ... read more

Geo: -34.9287, 138.599Saturday was our last day in Shanghai. We took our time packing etc in the morning and checked out of the hotel about 11am. Leaving our luggage there we walked up to the People's Square to do the Green Route of the Big Bus which included a visit to the Jade Buddha Temple. On reaching the bus stop we were told that we had just missed the last one so had a 30 minute wait. We tried to find a coffee shop in the New World shopping complex across the road but, having fruitlessly looked on the 3rd floor where it was supposed to be located, we returned to the bus stop to watch the passing parade.Once on the bus we drove around the square, past the Shanghai Museum and onto Huaihai Road. Geo: 31.23, 121.47Yesterday we had the day to ourselves to do some exploring. We have used hop on hop off buses in many other cities and find them very useful both as modes of transport and a way of getting an overview of the places which we may like to explore further. We hopped on the Big Bus just outside our hotel. This took us down to The Bund and along it and then through interesting areas of the city. We hopped off in The People's Square. This used to be the racecourse in colonial days but was then used as a parade ground by the early Communists and has now been turned into a lovely park for the locals. it has all the elements of the Chinese Garden. There is a small lake as well ... read more

Geo: 31.23, 121.47Yesterday we left Beijing and flew to Shanghai. It was a two hour trip with Chinese Eastern airlines and we had three seats to ourselves. We arrived here about 1-30pm and were met by our guide, Rebecca. She was very friendly and again spoke excellent English. The drive into the city took nearly an hour and we passed many outlying suburbs including the site of the 2010 World Expo which is now being redeveloped. Our hotel is situated in the Downtown area, a 15 minute walk from the famous Bund and the river. We arrived about 3pm and checked in. Rebecca pointed out nearby areas of shops, restaurants etc and then told us she would pick us up at 6-40pm to go to a Shanghai Acrobatic show.Once we had settled into what are very ... read more

Geo: 34.27, 108.9Today we had a full day tour of Xi'an scheduled. We were picked up by Lee, our tour guide, at 9am and headed out of town for the most important destination, the Terracotta Warriors. It was very smoggy but a fine day. Our first stop was at a Pottery and furniture factory where we were shown how the warriors were made. Typical of tour guides all over the world, Lee has his contacts here but it was an interesting place and the man from the factory spoke excellent English. We did buy a small replica of a General and a horse, particularly as we are heralding the Year of the Horse. From there we drove on to the site of the warriors. This remarkable archaelogical site was accidentally discovered in 1974 when a local farmer ... read more

Geo: 34.27, 108.9On Monday we visited the Lama Temple in Beijing. The day had the worst smog I had seen since we arrived so we did not want to be out in it for too long. The Lama Temple was only 2 stops away on the underground so we found it easily. Having walked along the adjoining road for at least 800 metres we found the entrance. There were many Chinese visitors keen to enter. The complex was first built in 1694 as a residence for Prince Yong of the Qing Dynasty. Once he became Emperor Yongzheng he used it periodically as a home. However, his successor, Emperor Qiantong turned it into a lamasery in 1744 which it remains to this very day. It is the largest Tibetan monks complex in China, (outside Tibet). It is set ... read more

Geo: 39.9056, 116.396Today we decided to return to Qianmen which we had visited briefly on Wednesday. This is the reconstructed area south of Tian'amen square which was opened in 2008 just in time for the Olympics. When I first came here in 1998 it was a market area with outside stalls and was very run down and neglected. It has now been given a complete makeover and the glory of bygone Imperial days has been restored. The street is now a Mall along which trams run. Shopfronts proudly display signs in Mandarin and English claiming the longevity of the business and noting that it is a China Cultural Heritage Treasure. There are also wonderful bronze statues depicting activities of bygone years outside the shops showing their original purposes. It is not just the single street either. There ... read more

Geo: 39.9056, 116.396Last night for dinner we ventured across the road from the back entrance to our hotel to the Aussino Wine Cellar and Restaurant. I had found it on Thursday night when I went to the adjacent 7/11 to buy some milk so we could have coffee in our room. This shop has an impressive array of wines, a rarity in China, as most resturants we have visited only stock beer. We were taken down two floors to a lavishly decorated room where we were shown to a marble table and esconsed on plush velvet couches. A large tank of oversized golden carp were doing ritual mating moves in a tank behind us. The menu was a mixture of Chinese and Teppanayaki with large fluctuations in prices. We settled for some spring rolls, sliced sirloin ... read more

Geo: 39.9056, 116.396Last night we were taken for dinner to a rather expensive restaurant, the X.E. Flavour Restaurant, by Dr Sun, Feng and Zhang. This was upstairs in a new building and we walked along several corridors all of which had private rooms on each side. We went into a large dining room where we were greeted by several staff. While we caught up with Feng, Dr Sun ordered and then we were presented with a series of interesting dishes including Peking duck with the pancakes etc as well as dates stuffed with sticky rice( which were delicious) and Tofu (which was not). A whole fish was particularly tasty while there were several other plates of meats, pork, chicken etc. This was all washed down with Yansing beer. Needless to say there was far too much ... read more
