Geo: -21.2318, -159.763The last two days we have been totally occupied by the Athletics. On Wednesday the day began in an overcast way. After breakfast caught the 10am bus to the track as I was running the Junior Men's and Women's High Jump at 12pm. This was a good event and we only had a few showers during it, not like the driving rain from last night. Our Jumps team has a mixture of Australians, Kiwis and Cook Islanders and everyone is friendly and flexible in what they can do. Then at 2pm we officiated at the Heptathlon Long Jump. Another event which ran smoothly. It is great to see a variety of Islanders here .We had Tahitians, New Guineans, Fijians as well as competitors from Australia and NZ.Once that was finished I had lunch and ... read more

Geo: -21.2318, -159.763On Monday morning we had a couple of hours with the car we had hired. We drove into Avarua and looked into a couple of the souvenir shops. There was very little there to buy but we did get a couple of wrap-around skirts for the little girls. We then took the car back to the resort. I did stop and take a photo of the very low key Parliament building. After lunch at the Edgewater we took the bus to the stadium for a meeting for all technical officials. This allowed us to meet our fellow officials and inspect the sites on which we will be operating for the next three days. After an hour or so there we returned to the resort. The highlight today was the Opening Ceremony of the Championships. This was ... read more

Geo: -21.2318, -159.763This morning, after catching up on missed sleep we set off in our hire car to drive around the island. Rarotonga is the largest of the Cook Islands but it only takes an hour at the most to drive right round it. The road runs along the beach past many resorts and villas. Needless to say Tourism is the biggest industry here.We headed for Muri Lagoon where Fletcher knew there was a great spot for lunch. This is the restaurant which overlooks the beach and fronts the Sailing Club, appropriately called Sails. This is a beautiful place. The lagoon is protected by a coral reef and the water is crystal clear. It is a half moon shape and the sand is white and thick. We walked down and sat in front of Sails for a ... read more

Geo: -21.2318, -159.763I had not been to the Cook Islands with Fletcher while he was running the RDC so when the Oceania Athletics Championships were scheduled there this year I knew we had to go. I had really enjoyed participating in them last year in Tahiti and looked forward to renewing friendships and visiting a beautiful part of the world. There is now a direct flight from Sydney to Rarotonga so we flew from Adelaide to Sydney on Saturday and then spent an uninspiring 7 hours at Sydney airport. The flight to Raro is one of the killer ones. It is only five and a half hours long but it leaves at 9-25pm and arrives in the Cooks at 7am on the same day, crossing the International Date Line on the way. The plane was packed with ... read more

Geo: -34.9258, 138.6Our last day in Rio was a short one. We had a stroll along the beach in the morning. On Sundays they close one half of Atlantico Avenue which stretches along Copacabana Beach and the Cariocas (i.e. those born in Rio) all come out to promenade, run, jog, walk their dogs and children etc in the sunshine. It was fun to watch the passing parade. Then it was finishing the packing, and checking out. We said goodbye to some of our fellow travellers as they were on different flights and then were taken to the airport for the long flight home. Two hours in the lounge at Rio airport and then a four hour flight to Santiago. Another three hours in the lounge there and then the 12 hour flight to Auckland. Fortunately, the flight ... read more

Geo: -22.9035, -43.2096We arrived into Rio about 5-10pm on Thursday. It took 45 minutes for our bags to appear and then another hour to get to our hotel. The Rio Othon Palace is right on the waterfront facing Copacabana beach. From our window we have a great view towards the Sugar Loaf along the beach. We left our bags in the room and with Brian, Kim, Jim and Lorraine we walked about two blocks to Don Camillo, an Italian restaurant that Eugenio, our local guide had recommended. Here we had a very nice meal. Fletcher had a black seafood risotto and I chose the trout. Both were delicious and were large servings. It was great to be back in Rio and savour the sights and sounds of this happening place. The next day was entirely free. We ... read more

Geo: -25.5478, -54.5881On Monday we left our hotel in Buenos Aires and stopped at Le Recoletta on the way to the airport. This is an above ground cemetery built over 100 years ago and is a necropolis not to be missed. The tombs and statues are works of art and there are many streets and lanes to be negotiated. The main attraction is seeing Eva Peron's modest tomb with several plaques on the wall dedicated to her. From there it was to the airport and the one hour forty minute flight to Iguassu Falls. We arrived on the Argentinian side of the falls and were collected and bussed into the Brazilian side and the National Park. Our hotel, Das Cataratas is a beautiful building built in the twenties and with a fabulous view of the falls. It ... read more

Geo: -34.6118, -58.4173On Sunday morning we arrived in Buenos Aires. We disembarked the ship and after collecting luggage we found our bus and our local guide Paola. Unfortunately it was pouring rain, the first wet day we have had on the trip. We drove into Independence Square, where the Casa Rosada is situated. Unfortunately the square has become a place of protest and that everpresent scourge of South America, grafitti. There is a tent embassy here for natives of the Chaco district who are asking for land and another demonstration by returned Falklands War veterans wanting repatriation. I am sure these claims are legitimate but it does spoil the place. However we walked to the front of Evita's palace and then to the Cathedral. This is a neo-classical building looking more like a Greek temple than a ... read more

Geo: -34.8939, -56.1568Wednesday, the 26th, was an onboard day. However, we enjoyed it thoroughly. At 11am we went to the Mariner Society brunch. This group is the loyalty club of Holland America Line. We were welcomed by the captain and then had a great 3 course meal accompanied by champagne and were given coasters of the ship at the end. Very enjoyable. We went to both quizzes for the day winning the afternoon one and then at 7pm our whole group gathered in the Italian restaurant on board, Canaletto's, for a celebration of the 5 members who arehaving birthdays on the trip, including Fletcher. They were all given a special cake and, of course, were sung to as a group. Good food, good company and good wine! The next day we had our first landfall in Argentina, when ... read more

Geo: -54.8, -68.3This morning we awoke as we were cruising along an area known as Glacier Alley. We went out onto deck to get a glimpse of the snow- capped mountains coming down to the sea. We also saw one or two glaciers along the way. We actually sailed past Ushuaia and viewed it from afar before turning back to enter the channel leading to our docking space. It was very windy and it took quite a deal of manoeuvring to line up on the pier and dock safely. It was a beautiful sunny day and we watched some of the procedures from our lunch table and the rest from the deck. At 2-15pm we went down to the Mondrian Lounge to await our tour. This was the first on shore tour we had booked and ... read more
