Geo: -53.1479, -70.9303On Thursday, we berthed at Puerto Chacabuco. This is in a beautiful location, surrounded by mountains in an area known as the Chilean Fjords. We went into port on tenders and were taken by shuttle bus to a small centre, where there were some handicrafts on sale. We then caught a local bus for $US1 a head and were driven in to another nearby town. This was Puerto Aysen which had one very long main street along which we walked looking for WiFi cafes etc. There was not much on offer. There were many small shops but nothing exciting. We did finally reach a very pretty small square with the local church on one side. We went in. This was fairly modern with some very nice wood panels; one of the Last Supper was ... read more

Geo: -41.4752, -72.9521Monday morning we left Santiago at 11 am to drive to Valparaiso. This took us along the highway and through a wine growing area. We stopped at Los Hornitos de Curacavi for a coffee break and to wait for the other Bunniks' tour group to catch up.Once we reached Valparaiso, the bus took us on a short city tour. Valparaiso is built on the hills overlooking the sea. It is very densely populated with long winding stairways reaching up to the top of the hillsides. Everything is covered in graffiti which really spoils the older buildings. We then came down to the port. Embarkation was very smooth. We checked in and having gone through security we went on board. We are on Deck 1. They call it Dolphin Deck to make it sound better! ... read more

Geo: -13.3111, -72.1152Today we spent a full day exploring the Sacred Valley. Our first stop was near the town of Maras. In a valley is the salt mine of Maras. Our first view was from above as w wound our way down the mountain. This area has a salty spring which emerges from the mountain side. The local farmers, following the Inca tradition, dry out the water in a complex of salt pans. We walked down the hill to see them up close. Because it was the wet season there was just a series of brown muddy pools but in the dry it is a mass of white crystals. From there we drove through the town and to the impressive Inca site of Moray. This is set in a valley and is a series of concentric circular ... read more

Geo: -13.1583, -72.5314On Wednesday morning we left Cusco by bus at 6am. We had a two hour drive through Urubamba to Ollayantambo to catch the train to Mach Picchu. The train arrived at 8-20am and we left for our one and a half hour trip through the valley alongside the Urubamba River. The train was very comfortable with viewing windows in the roof. as well as large windows. We were serve breakfast. This consisted of cactus fruit, melons, Quinoa pancakes with blueberry sauce and a warm spinach pastry. We also had coffee. The scenery was stunning. Apart from the roaring river the tall mountains and green hillsides were very attractive. We arrived in Machu Picchu about 10am. From the station we had a short walk to our hotel, Inkaterra. This is a fantastic place. It is an ... read more

Geo: -13.52, -71.99We left Lima at 9-30am and had a 2 hour flight to Cusco. This is high in the Andes mountains and is the gateway to the history of the Incas and their invasion by the Spanish. We checked in at our hotel which is in an old Spanish building with a great courtyard in the centre. Our room is comfortable but lacks light.Once we were checked in we were taken to a restaurant for a lovely lunch. It began with the compulsory Pisco Sour then we had an entree of a local dish, a ball of mashed potato topped by avocado and chilli and mayonaise. It was delicious. For main we had chicken with the local Andean chips and then coffee. Very pleasant. From there we walked across the main square to the huge ... read more

Geo: -12.0931, -77.0465On Sunday was our last day in the Galapagos. In the morning the excursion was a "2 to 3km walk" to Tortuga Bay for a swim. The day was very hot, even at 8am so we decided to stay at the hotel. We had had 2 very intense days and Fletcher had stirred up some sciatica and was having problems walking a long way. As he wants to get to Machu Pichu he thought a rest would be advisable. In the end this proved the best option. We spent some of the morning on the Internet with me updating this blog and we went for a short walk to buy postcards. We were going to the Post Office til we realised it was Sunday. We went dowen to the pool about 11-30am to join some ... read more

Geo: -1.66702, -83.5977We set out at 7am this morning for a visit to Seymour Island. Again we had the bus trip across the island to where the Altamar was moored. Once on board we motored out of the port and this time turned right. We travelled along the length of Baltra Island which is mainly taken up by the airport.Once at Seymour we anchored off shore and were ferried across to a rocky landing place at the foot of stone steps. Each time we have alighted from this rubber dinghy I keep thinking of the children's book, "Who Sank the Boat?" On shore we found ourselves surrounded by the local inhabitants, namely crabs, sealions, iguanas and birds, 1000s of birds. This has no human occupants and is covered with much more vegetation than Bartolome. There were ... read more

Geo: -1.66702, -83.5977We flew into the Galapagos Islands on Thursday, landing about !2pm having had a one hour time change. The airport is on Baltra Island, one of the 113 islands in the Galapagos archipelago. It took a while to get through the airport as everyone has to pay a $US100 entry fee which I presume goes towards the upkeep of this special National Park. Once all the group had cleared this hurdle we were taken by bus to a ferry which took us across to Sana Cruz Island which has the most inhabitants. We then had a one hour journey across the island to Port Ayora and our hotel. On the way we stopped to see a depression made by collapsing lava bubbles which has formed natural canyons on both sides of the road. It ... read more

Geo: -2.20584, -79.908This morning we loaded our luggage onto the bus and set out on our City Tour of Santiago. This began by driving us through the streets of Downtown Santiago . Maurizio, our guide, emphasised they were a nation of immigrants and this is brought home by the fact that there are separate areas dedicated to the British, French, German, Italian and Spanish communities, each with their distinctive architecture and culture. Our first stop was at the Racecourse which the British built. There is another one built by the French. It was still relatively early in the morning and we saw the jockeys exercising their horses on the track. From there we drove through the British and French sections of the town , flanked by the former houses of the rich families which are now converted ... read more

Geo: -33.4691, -70.642Today was a long day. It started in Sydney at 6am when we woke and then caught the shuttle bus to the International Terminal at 7-10am. After check-in and customs etc we had an hour in the Qantas Lounge before boarding our Lan Chile flight. We were away right on time at 9-30am and had an uneventful 2 and a half hour flight to Auckland.Transitting there was ridiculous as as soon as we were off the plane we had to queue to go through a security check again before being allowed into the departure hall. They only had one screening station opened at first so it took ages and was in a very awkward position so people were queued up over the main passageway.Once through there we had a half hour in the Qantas ... read more
