On Sunday was our last day in the Galapagos. In the morning the excursion was a "2 to 3km walk" to Tortuga Bay for a swim. The day was very hot, even at 8am so we decided to stay at the hotel. We had had 2 very intense days and Fletcher had stirred up some sciatica and was having problems walking a long way. As he wants to get to Machu Pichu he thought a rest would be advisable.
In the end this proved the best option. We spent some of the morning on the Internet with me updating this blog and we went for a short walk to buy postcards. We were going to the Post Office til we realised it was Sunday. We went dowen to the pool about 11-30am to join some of the others who, like us, had opted out or turned around. When the rest came back they were exhausted. It turned out to be more like 9 kms there and back and it was 35 degrees and humid.
After another great lunch we boarded the bus and were taken into the highlands of Santa Cruz Island to see the giant tortoises in the wild. We
walked through grassy, muddy terrain to get up close to them. It had been raining so we were dodging puddles. We saw four of themup to their shells in a small pond of muddy water. A fifth came lumbering along to join them. We were then taken to a tunnel which had been carved out by lava flow. We walked down some steps into a large and relatively long tunnel which fortunately was lit. Very interesting formations here.
While chatting to a couple of the group I discovered that I was supposed to have had a Yellow Fever injection. I had not seen this in any of the literature sent to us. I went on the government website when I got back and it is mainly for getting back into Australia. Brazil is cpnsidered a yellow fever country and I am returning straight frqm Rio. They will let you back in with a lecture etc but I thought it better to be safe. Gesus, our tour director is going to try and arrange for me to have one in Peru somewhere.
We had our final dinner in the Galapagos that night and all agreed it had been a fabulous few days/
The next
morning we left at 9am. A one hour drive to the port, ferry across to Baltra, bus to the aitport, one hour wait there after getting through check-in. Then a 2 hour flight to Guayaquil, forty minute wait on the tarmac and the 35 minutes to Quito. We were supposed to collect luggage in Quito and recheck though to Lima but none of our bags appeared. After waitiing for ages we were told they had been sent through to Lima Another one hour wait in Quito and then a 2 hour flight to Lima. We arrived there about 10-30pm and by the time we got through Customs and waited for everyone to get their bags it was after 11-30. Fortunately it was a short walk across the street to the Ramada Airport hotel where we were given a free Pisco Sour as a welcome drink. Finally made it to our room and bed about 12-30. A long day!!
