South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu June 28th 2009

We finally made it to Macchu Picchu after some really extraordinary efforts for us. Getting there was half the battle. I wanted to keep the cost low, so I opted not to take the train from Cusco to Aguas Callientes (the town you must get to in order to take a bus up to Macchu Picchu). Anyway, the tickets were going to be over $100 so I decided to opt for the backpacker special. From Cusco, take a 6 hour bus ride to Santa Maria. Then a 1 hour taxi ride to Santa Teresa. We made it that far on Saturday. On Sunday we were going to take a train from the station nearby to Aquas Callientes, however, the trains only go at 4.30 pm. Ridiculous if you ask me. It is a political thing I ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca » Uros Island June 24th 2009

Hello! With illness finally behind us, we were finally ready to see Uros Island or the floating islands. The Uros people made there homes on the reeds growing in Lake Titicaca even before the Incas, centuries ago to stay away from some other more aggressive tribes that were in the area. The islands are built using layers of the bouyant totora reeds that grow in the shallows of lake Titicaca. Several hundred still live this lifestyle. Each reed island houses 3 to 4 families. They have a school and hospital on these reeds as well. When you walk on the islands, they are very soft and springy. A very unique experience. They have to replace the top layer of reeds every 15 days or so depending on the weather. They make their homes, boats, and crafts ... read more

We are still in Puno. Yesteday, I went to the pharmacy again, hoping to get some medicine that would help Macayla. Thankfully, we ran into a guy there that was able to translate. The pharmacist gave me something with amoxicillan in it. Macayla has been taking that but unsure if it is helping. She felt better this morning, but when we went out for a bite to eat, she was exhausted after walking very briefly. She felt weak and dizzy. This will be the third day that we are pretty much staying in from doing much of anything. I am a bit concerned that she is not bouncing back as quickly as I thought. Hopefully we can get to the islands tomorrow. We have been in Puno for a long time; almost a week. I am ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Puno June 22nd 2009

Hello everyone, Well, we made it to Puno on Friday evening. We had reservations at the Bothy hostel in Puno, but when we arrived we found that they had overbooked. Two other couples were in the same boat. Anyway, we were transported to a new hostel but we were not happy with it. We stayed that night but quickly went out the next morning to find something else. Saturday morning we found hostel Vylena only block from the main square. We quickly checked in there. We have been there ever since because Macayla is ill. I think that she has the flu and is begging me to go home. Have tried to change to an earlier flight home but something is wrong with the airline website. Hopefully they fix it soon or I will have to ... read more

Left for Colca Canyon at 7:30 am Wednesday morning and drove around 3 hours to the town of Chivay. On the way, we drove through our high point of 4,??? meters above sea level. Macayla and I both had headaches and our tour guide gave us drops of alcohol to rub in our hands and quickly breathe in. It helped but for a short period of time. We finally took an aspirin each and that did the trick. Anyway, we drove through some highlands and were able to see our first alapacas in the wild. Very exciting. Once we arrived in Chivay, our stopping point for the night, we checked into the hostel and then went to the hotsprings. This was wonderful since we were so cold up in the mountains. It was below freezing once ... read more

Hello We took an all night bus from Nazca to Arequipa with Cruz del Sur. It was so uncomfortable that we barely slept. Made it to Arequipa by 7 am and went straight to the Bothy hostel. It is very relaxed with very friendly staff. We settled in for a few minutes and went to see Juanita the Ice Princess at the museum. There was no photography permitted but it was an amazing sight to see. An archeologist found her buried in ice on one of the mountains nearby and she is very well preserved. They found that she was sacrificed to the Gods by the Inca (I think) and she was only around 12 or 13 years of age. She was killed by a blow to the head. There were other figurines and such buried ... read more

We booked a trip to visit the Cantallo aqueducts, an Inca archeological site, and some Nazca Lines. We were going to take a flight to see the Nazca Lines by air which is the best way to see them, but Macayla did not want to get into such a small plane. The Nazca Lines are spread across around 500 sq. kilometers of arid desert. These lines form over 800 lines, 300 geoglyths, and 70 biomorphs. We were able to see Cerro Blanco, the world´s highest sand dune at 2,078 meters. The aquaducts were pretty amazing, probably because they were made so long ago. I believe the guide said that they date back to 350 BC. They are still used today and farmers continue to work together to keep them in working order. The Inca ruins were ... read more

Hello I cannot seem to get my pictures to download lately and until I figure what is wrong, no pictures. We left for our tour to the Ballestas Islands at 8 am. It began at the beach where loads of people were waiting for the same tour and we had time to kill before the boats arrived for us. The tour operators had big bags of fish that they were feeding the pelicans and we were able to get some fantastic photos with hoards of pelicans. It was really great but Macayla was scared, she would not get near them. We then left for the tour and were able to see penquins, sea lions and various other bird life. Plus, we were able to see the famous three-pronged Candelabra, a giant figure etched in the side ... read more

Before leaving Huacachina this morning, Macayla and I chose to try and climb a sand dune and walk the top. We made it up to the top and were able to take some great pictures of Huacachina down below. Very beautiful. Huacachina was originally built for the Peruvian elite as a vacation location and now it is more of a backpacker hang-out. Drove into Ica to catch a bus to Pisco and had to kill some time before the bus left. We went to the Plaza de Armas for some lunch and in the plaza they were having a mass wedding. It was pretty cool to witness. So many women dressed in white getting married one after the other. Macayla and I found it interesting and strange all at the same time. With the language barrier, ... read more

After a rough night sleep due to very uncomfortable beds, we were awakened by the pidder padder of hammers and loud banging. Of course, the hostal is under construction. I have the luck. We traveled into Ica by taxi and went to the museum. We were looking forward to the museum because of the mummies and trophy heads that they claimed to have. The museum sure did not disappoint. Next, we went into town for a bite to eat and noticed in the Plaza de Armas was some sort of band playing. Macayla and I went in to investigate and found that they were having a celebration. Table after table was set up but nothing on them. There was a man who spoke broken English that tried to explain that they were making the world´s largest ... read more
