Last Thursday, Macayla and I headed to Las Fuentes Georginas (natural hotsprings) where we soaked in hot, sulfurous water for two hours. However, the ride there was nerve-racking due to the fact that parts of the road were crumbling on the edges up the mountain. We made it there with all limbs attached and headed to the springs. There were three pools of varying temperatures and one pool was so hot that it was difficult to even stick a toe in it. We watched as locals jumped in and submerged themselves in it. When they came out their skin was beet red. Crazy! The other two pools were not quite as hot and we relaxed until the driver gave us the signal to leave. Definitely worth the trip. Friday was the weekly cena (dinner) at Sakribal ... read more

We are now in the middle of our second week of Spanish lessons. Hard to believe that I can now talk to people in Spanish like a two-year-old might. Better than when I started. Last Wednesday I voiced my frustrations about my terrible Spanish teacher and I got a new one. Her name is Cindy and she is great. She actually teaches me, explains things, and speaks to me in Spanish. The only bad thing is that she gives tons of homework. Sometimes I am working on homework for over two hours. Saturday morning we went to the very sad zoo that is here in Xela. Cramped cages, unhappy animals, and dirty. It is actually free to get into the zoo, so we could not pass it up. Too bad that it is so poorly kept; ... read more

Macayla and I arrived in Quetzaltenango Sunday night in the pouring rain and the power was out in zone 1. We had just spent a grueling seven hours on two cram-packed buses to get here and on top of that we missed our stop and went on to the next town. When we asked the bus driver if we had made it to our destination, he said we had passed our stop. He immediately stopped the bus, put our packs on the side of the road and left. Funny now, not so much then. Standing in the pouring rain on the side of the road in a country that you do not speak the language was upsetting. A taxi eventually stopped and we headed to a hostel that we had no reservations to stay. Another traveler ... read more

The Mayan ruins are quite impressive and span around 27 sq km. People have lived in this area since at least 1200 BC. Macayla really enjoyed the ruins and it sparked her fantasy of becoming an archaeologist again. We spent the entire morning there before hopping on a bus to Guatemala. The plan was to head toward Esquipulas where there is a grande basilica that holds the Black Christ. Supposedly the Black Christ has healing powers and because of this people travel to this destination in large numbers sometimes entering on their knees. There was no direct way to get there and by the time we made it to Chiqimula, it was dark and the buses stopped running to that location. Maybe after Spanish school we can head back there. ... read more

One day in San Pedro Sula was enough. No backpackers around and not all that safe in most parts. We took a bus to Copan Ruinas to see the ruins of a once lost Mayan city. We arrived in Copan in the late afternoon and our hostel, Iguana Azul, was overbooked and we were unable to stay there. We went to the next hostel that had WIFI since Macayla requires that at every stay and found the Via Via Cafe and hostel. This place has a great vibe and Abel is fantastic with lots of information and helpful tips. Abel suggested purchasing tickets to Macaw Mountain, a bird sanctuary, which we decided to do first. This sanctuary has several different types of Macaws, Toucans, owls, and various other birds. Macayla was quite pleased with the interactive ... read more

Our flight landed without a hitch and we were happy to get to the hostel since we were exhausted having landed at four in the morning Ohio time. Once we were up and moving, we decided to head up a steep hill to a Coca Cola sign that was similar in fashion to the Hollywood sign in LA. The day was extremely hot and steamy and we stopped several times just to hydrate. We never actually made it to the sign after hiking over an hour. On our way back down the "mountain" there was a strange sound coming from up in the trees and we noticed bird nests literally hanging at least a foot from different branches.... read more

Made it back to the US around 6 am. Since the flight was changed to return early, I found a better deal by renting a car and driving back to Ohio. Did not arrive in Ohio until July 3 around 7:30 am. We had an amazing trip, but due to illness and other problems we encountered along the way, it was best to come home early. I certainly do not regret this decision and hope our trip next year will be more exciting. Hope you enjoyed our travel blog.... read more

Terrible night sleep. Nearly froze to death, but happy to be heading for Lima today. Made it to the bus station and found a bus headed for Lima. It is a close to a 22 hour ride. Crazy long but need to be at the airport tomorrow for a flight home. No crazy bus stories except one. They make it very clear that when you ride the bus that has a toilet, you should only urinate. Well, early in the morning, one man chose to do some other business in the commode and it really stunk up the place. The people on board had a major uprising and the man was thrown every name in the book. I think they very nearly killed him. It was a terribly heated situation that finally died down. The poor ... read more

Up early to continue back to Cusco. Once again, we had to take a taxi from Santa Teresa to Santa Maria. Once in Santa Maria, I wanted to take a bus to Cusco instead of taking a private car like we did last time. That ended up being a big mistake. The private car was leaving shortly after we arrived but I wanted to instead take a bus that was 2 hours away. Trying to keep costs low since I changed our plane tickets to come home early. Anyway, the bus finally arrived after a 3 hour wait. Surprised that I expected it to be on time. We were on the bus for about an hour when it broke down on top of a mountain, literally! The worst part was that we had to find our ... read more
