Geo: 50.0553, 19.9274Dzien dobry, all!Filling in the narrative on this blog entry on Wed Oct 5 morning, since yesterday was a full day of arrival in Krakow, getting our bearings (in more ways than one), tasting local Polish cuisine, browsing some markets, and seeing a few sights.  By evening, it was time for a good night's rest.Which is what we did NOT get on the 11-hour overnight train ride from Budapest to Krakow the night before! In retrospect, what had seemed to be a decent train ride and sleep in our cozy (very cozy) and little (VERY little) sleep compartment turned into a morning of a bad case of the wobbles and train travel sickness. Not sure if it was an inner ear thing, but especially with Mike, the ground under his feet felt like it was ... read more

Geo: 47.4984, 19.0408Szia (Hello) from Budapest!Waiting for our ride to the train station for our overnight train ride to Krakow, Poland after three wonderful and activity-packed days in Budapest. While our time in Prague was great, we loved Budapest even more. We'll try to tell most of our Budapest story in pictures attached to this blog entry, but here's a summary of our time here:Arrived in Budapest the morning of Saturday, October 1 rummy as all get-out after the all-night train ride from Prague. Couldn't check into our hotel room yet, so we dumped the bags and staggered out into the bright sunshine, heading over to the Absolute Budapest walking tour company (founded and owned by an Oregonian, by the way). We were signed up for the 3 1/2 hour walking tour of Budapest the next day, ... read more

Geo: 50.0878, 14.4205Szia (Hi) from Budapest!Busy day yesterday, checked out of hotel at 11:00am and then homeless for the next 12 hours, day ending in an 8-hour overnight train to Budapest (more on that later).Walked over to Petrin Hill after checking out and storing our luggage for later. It's a large beautiful city park 15 minutes from the hotel with rose gardens, the 650-year old Hunger Wall (built as a public works project to employ and feed the hungry), and a miniature replica of the Eiffel Tower at the top of the hill. Climbed a couple of hundred stairs (who needs a Stairmaster?) to the observation deck at the top of the tower for some great vistas over Prague.Dropped off at the train station for our 11:58pm all-night train to Budapest. This was a big experiment ... read more

Geo: 50.0878, 14.4205Woke up today and made a change of plans -- nice to be spontaneous while traveling! We'd originally planned an all-day excursion (three hours on the bus each way) to Český Krumlov, an historic city in southern Bohemia, but decided to keep exploring Prague and spare ourselves a long day of travel to see a grand castle. So, out just a couple of inexpensive pre-purchased bus tickets, we caught the tram up the hill above Prague to explore the historic and sprawling Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral -- the Czech Republic's largest church -- within the castle walls, and many other interesting castle sites. Before catching the tram, we made a brief visit to the Church of St. Nicholas, a Jesuit church whose belfry we climbed last evening. We took the tram to the top of the ridge ... read more

Geo: 50.0878, 14.4205Dobrý večer (Good evening), all!Toured almost the entire historical part of Prague on foot today, including Old Town, a glimpse of New Town, the Jewish Quarter, and Little Quarter.Mike went out early to get a preview of the route to the Old Town Square and to try to get some early morning pictures before the crowds showed up.  With Sharon a little later, the walking tour took in the Old Town Hall and Astronomical Clock (quite a delight!), the Tyn Church, Wenceslas Square, the open-air Halveska Market, the Old-New Synagogue in the Jewish Quarter, and the church belfry at the Church of St. Nicholas, all 299 stairs up to the top and its dramatic views over the whole city.We ran out of time for the Prague Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral, so that'll be Friday ... read more

Geo: 50.0878, 14.4205Landed in sunny Prague, Czech Republic in a sleep-deprived daze, barely noticed the countryside, villages, and cobblestone city streets whizzing by on our way from the airport to our hotel in Prague's Little Quarter, and flopped on the bed at the hotel for a quick, refreshing nap.Arose refreshed, showered, and headed out for a stroll to explore the neighborhood, Kampa Island, and the landmark Charles Bridge.Found a neat underground cafe near our hotel for a simple meal, including fall-off-the-bone roasted pig knuckle braised in dark beer. Yum!A city tour awaits tomorrow!Ahoj!... read more

Geo: 45.5118, -122.676Day started with word of a flight delay, which might have helped our navigation through the Portland morning commute, but cramp our connection at JFK. Then, on way to PDX, there's a crash on I-5 that results in 45-minute delay, so -- thanks to Madame GPS -- we rerouted up the scenic 99E back way through Woodburn and Oregon City. Once in the air, though, it was smooth sailing through JFK and onto Prague. After a sleepless overnight flight, we're reminded how much we don't enjoy red eye flights! Next stop, the Czech Republic.... read more

Geo: 44.9332, -123.043We rose at 4:00 AM to get ready for our 5:00 AM taxi to the airport for a 7:15 AM flight on our Granada-Madrid-Dallas/Ft. Worth-PDX trip home.24 hours from takeoff, we'd be back in Oregon, doggies in our arms, and arriving home in Salem. It's always great to be home! What did we enjoy and learn on this trip?1. The people of Spain are warm, friendly, inviting, and for the most part accepting of those with limited Spanish language skills.2. The trains in Spain, as well as the cities' Metro systems, are fabulous ways to travel, comfortable, efficient, affordable, fast, and always on-time. The US and US cities have missed so many opportunities to build trains into our transportation infrastructure.3. The food in Spain is delicioso, even for people like us who navigate around red meat. ... read more

Geo: 37.1882, -3.60667On this, our last full day in Spain, we were up early to catch a 7:30 AM bus up the hill to the Alhambra. We had an 8:30 AM entry time to the Nazrid Palace (Palacios Nazaries), so we walked down the hill from the main entrance to queue up at the Justice Gate near the entrance to the palace. It was a cool overcast day that turned sunny by mid-morning, a glorious day for a stroll through the last and greatest Moorish palace, village, fort, gardens, and stronghold in Europe. We'll just use our photos to illustrate the splendor and wonder of this place, including the Palacios Nazaries, the Charles V Palace, the Alcazaba (the fort, the original "red castle," Alhambra), the Medina (village), and the Generalife Gardens. After a full morning at the Alhambra, it was ... read more
