Geo: 37.1765, -3.59793After checking out, we headed to the train station to catch a noon train to Granada, our last stop on this blitz through Spain. This train was a bit of a milk run to Granada, albeit quite comfortable, with the last segment by bus because the train tracks were under repair. It was a short taxi ride from the train station to our hotel in the old town area of Granada, the Hotel Anacapri. After check-in and dumping our bags in the room, we navigated our way to Plaza Nueva to pick up the city card, Bono Turistico, that we'd purchased online to cover admission to the major sites, including the Alhambra, the Cathedral, and the Royal Chapel. We have an early 8:30 AM entry time to the Nazrid Palace on the Alhambra site tomorrow. Our walking ... read more

Geo: 37.3833, -5.9965We woke to a beautiful morning in Sevilla and got ready for a busy day. On the itinerary was a walking tour of Sevilla, the Royal Alcazar and gardens, the cathedral and bell tower, dinner, and an evening of flamenco. The "free" walking tour (no set fee, but tips optional and encouraged at its conclusion) picked us up in hotel lobby and led a growing snake of humanity over to a plaza near the cathedral. There, the gathered throng was divided into manageable sized groups by native language, and we were off on our almost 3-hour tour (a 3-hour tour). Our affable tour guide, Adrian from Feel the City Tours, led us on a spirited and fascinating tour past the cathedral and its landmark bell tower (first built as a Muslim minaret), the Royal Alcazar, the ... read more

Geo: 37.3833, -5.9965Today's entry could be subtitled "Lost in the alleys of old Sevilla." After checking out from our wonderful hotel on the Puerta del Sol, we had an easy cross town subway ride to get to Madrid's Atocha train station. After a pleasant train ride to Sevilla from Madrid (love train travel!), we suddenly found ourselves in a much warmer climate.Caught the bus from the Sevilla train station to a point that we thought would be easy walking distance into the central part of the city and the old historic neighborhood, the Barrio Santa Cruz, where our hotel, the El Rey Moro, was located. As it turned out, it was not so easy. The walk from the bus stop turned into a very long walk when we entered the labyrinth like streets and alleys of the ... read more

Geo: 39.8568, -4.02448Today, we caught a train for the 25-minute ride to Toledo, Spain's historic former capital, its rocky perch surrounded on three sides by the Tajo River. In Toledo, the main attraction is the cathedral, Santa Iglesia Catedral Primada de Toledo, but the entire city is a well-preserved cultural, historical, and spiritual jewel. The cathedral took over 250 years to build (1226-1495) and is the largest in Spain. It is full of oo's, and ah's, and wow's.Since the cathedral didn't open for visitors until 2:00 PM (because of Sunday masses), we had some time to stroll the lovely lanes and alleys and hills of Toledo. We stopped at the Jesuit church, Church of San Ildefonso, and climbed the bell tower for a sweeping view of the cathedral, the city, and the hillsides surrounding it. Our train ... read more

Geo: 40.4167, -3.70327Today, we took a self-guided walking tour from Puerta del Sol to take in an old cobblestone city square, Plaza Mayor, a market, a small church, the Town Hall, Madrid's Almudena Cathedral, and a walk-by the Royal Palace. In the afternoon, after securing our train tickets for tomorrow's day trip to Toledo, we took the train and walked out to the Prado Museum, a confusing but well-stocked labyrinth of great European painters, for its free evening admission. A long queue to get in didn't leave us quite enough time to see everything we wanted to see, but works by Velasquez, Greco, and Bosch made it worthwhile. The light (and most enjoyed) moment of that night at the museum occurred at the security check at the entrance, where the museum was confiscating all selfie sticks.Hooray, and kudos ... read more

Geo: 40.4167, -3.70327Because of our late evening train out of Barcelona for Madrid, we had the whole day to play. Had the breakfast buffet (with a fabulous pastry and fantastic Valencia oranges) at our hotel, checked out, stashed our bags, and headed for the Picasso museum five minutes away.As what seems to be our serendipitous luck on our European trips, today was a regional holiday (also explained to us as a "strike" day for some workers). Many services and schedules were going to be affected due to the Independence Day nature of the holiday, an observance of the drive for regional (Catalunyan) independence from Spain. So the streets were alive with parades and demonstrations. We lucked into a short queue to get into the Picasso Museum, serenaded by a couple of street musicians in the alley while ... read more

Geo: 41.3879, 2.16992Awoke (if indeed we ever slept) to any early morning landing at London Heathrow. Rambled through a long series of seemingly random hallways through Customs and baggage security check.Sharon and I were funneled through two separate lines. My process was long, I thought, because of my near strip-down search due to my pacemaker, which can't go through electromagnetic security machines. When I finally reassembled myself, I looked around and Sharon was gone!OK, so I thought Ms. Smartypants left the security area and headed for our next gate without me, figuring I was just being my usual slow me and would just catch up. So, I headed off in search of my travel mate. But she was nowhere to be found. Back and forth for about 20 minutes I searched. A couple of the security guys ... read more

Geo: 45.5872, -122.582Greetings from the kitchen table at the Bednarek homestead in Salem, Oregon, two days before we leave for Spain, setting up the blog for our trip, getting it up and running, configuring e-mail alerts, and coming to grips with how much more there is to do to get ready. Our bags are stacked to overflow, so there's some narrowing down and decision making to do, such as how many undies to pack and whether or not to plan on laundry in the sink. Also, we've got Spain train passes but no specific trips reserved, as well as two nights in Granada at the end of the trip but no tickets into the Alhambra yet. I'm finding that Spanish web sites are hard to navigate and quick to reject foreign credit cards, so a lot of ... read more

Geo: 44.9332, -123.043Bonjour, family and friends! We slept in our own bed in Salem, Oregon last night, with our dogs Charlie and Onnie by our side. It was the culmination and reward from a 24-hour trek back home that started at 5:30 a.m. Paris time. What sweet sweet sleep. And, thanks to Sharon's industrious burst last night, all the clothes are clean. The trip from Paris to Salem, with flights from Paris to San Francisco (11+ hours) to Portland (another 2 hours), was actually pretty painless except for the obvious posterior targeting and leg cramping. While full, the United CDG-SFO flight was comfortable, clean, sans crying babies and cranky children (off-season travel a joyful perk of retirement), and equipped with a full array of media options.Watched 'The Great Gatsby' (good movie), 'Now You See Me' (REALLY enjoyed that!) ... read more

Geo: 48.7912, 2.65432Bonsoir, family and friends:Checked out of our hotel and strolled the streets of Avignon one more time before it was time to grab a quick lunch and board the bus to the train station. On the way to the bus, we said hello to a fellow who was eating breakfast at our hotel the last couple of days. I asked him if he was leaving and he said he was -- in English -- so we engaged in a little conversation. I asked him where he was from, and he said Portland. When I asked Oregon or Maine, he responded Oregon. He asked where we were from and we chuckled Salem, Oregon. Then we shared one of those 'small world' moments. But then, we found out he was an architect who had worked extensively on ... read more
