Geo: 43.3187, 11.3305Buonasera all:It was a rainy day Sunday in Siena, so it was a great day for some indoor spirituality and a winery tour to a quaint hill town south of Siena, Montalcino, almost 2000' above sea level and the home of the most famous and robust product of the Sangiovese grape, Brunello di Montalcino. The morning was spent at the Santuary of St. Catherine, which was created around her childhood home. She was known for persuading the pope to return to Rome from Avignon, France when she was a young Dominican nun, and after her death went on to become the patron saint of Siena and Europe. In the afternoon, we took a field trip to two wineries in the Montalcino area south of Siena -- one a small family winery within the old city walls, ... read more

Geo: 43.3187, 11.3305Bongiorno all:We saw the entire medieval city of Siena on a 2-hour walking tour Saturday, led by a wonderful native Sienese woman from My Tours. Saturday happened to be the Feast Day of St. Catherine, so everything was decked out and festive. We heard about the 17 districts in the city, the role Siena played as a pilgrimage stop between England and Rome, the life of St. Catherine of Siena, patron saint for this city and all of Europe, the war between Siena and Florence, its role in banking, and the annual horse races run in the Il Campo, the public square in front of the city hall, Palazzo Pubblico, that pits the city's neighborhoods against each other in a lively, festive competition. The walking tour ended inside the Duomo, a stunning architectural and religious structure. ... read more

Geo: 43.3187, 11.3305Ciao all:Friday, April 27 was moving day. We ended our 4-day stay in Firenze (Florence), packed our bags, and jumped on a bus for the medieval city of Siena, an hour or so south. But first, we had one more museum to see, the Duomo Museum that houses all the original paintings and sculptures from the cathedral for safe keeping, restoration, and public display. Two remarkable works are worth noting, among the most amazing pieces we've seen this week: Michelangelo's Pieta and Donatello's Maddalena (Mary Magdalene). The museum also had a great history and workshop space on the design and building of the cathedral and Brunelleschi's dome. Then, off to Siena, where we arrived and settled in early enough to head out for our usual Friday night pizza -- had eggplant, zucchini, and non-marinated artichokes on ... read more

Geo: 43.6731, 10.6753Ciao everyone:Thursday, we took a day-long trip to the Cinque Terre National Park on the Italian Riveria to do some serious hiking on a trek organized by Walkabout Florence. The weather was beautiful (probably should have packed more sunscreen!), the scenery was spectacular, the villages were colorful and quaint, and the hiking was challenging, envigorating, and rewarding.Add a couple of train rides, seafood salad and fresh pesto for lunch, and a coast-hugging boat ride back to Riomaggiore and it made for a full day. Dinner back in Florence late that night -- papardelle (long, wide noodles) in wild boar sauce with a nice Italian beer (Mike felt like he deserved it) and a spicy penne pasta with Chianti (for Sharon) -- made for the perfect Italian trek. You must try this yourself some day!Love to all,Mike ... read more

Geo: 43.7687, 11.2569Bongiorno all:Falling further and further behind on these blog entries, this being Friday morning and getting ready to check out of our wonderful hotel in Florence (Firenze) and head south to Siena.Wednesday was another full day of art, architecture, romance, and walking. We started the day at the Museum of San Marco, a 15th century monastery housing an incredible collection of frescoes by Fra Angelico. The upstairs has 43 cells (living rooms) decorated by Angelico and his assistants. Quite spiritually engaging. Then, onto the Ponte Vecchio to browse for Mike's temporary, replacement wedding ring (yes, Albert, Mike is quite conscious of his naked left ring finger), but that turned into just a nice walk through the historic city on a lovely day, because it was onto the moment Kate has been waiting for -- our ... read more

Geo: 43.7687, 11.2569Buonasera on Wednesday night, friends and family!Yesterday, Tues April 24, was a full day spent seeing most of Florence on foot, starting with a 3-hour walking tour of the 'Renaissance' part of the city, followed by a tour of the Uffizi Gallery and its world famous collection of works by the Renaissance masters, and topped off by the steep 463-stair climb to the top of the Duomo's dome for a sweeping view of the entire city and Tuscany countryside. The final course of our Florentine full meal deal was dinner at Trattoria Za-Za -- saffron risoto with truffles, shrimp, and zucchini, with a nice Brunello. What a day! Sorry to say, we were too spent to log onto this blog, so we're playing a little catch-up tonight. The walking tour, led by a guide from ArtViva, ... read more

Geo: 43.7687, 11.2569Ciao all:Completed our long trip to Florence this afternoon after yesterday's PDX-Phoenix-Philadelphia legs, the transatlantic Philadelphia-to-Brussels overnight, and a short 2-hour hop from Belgium to Florence, Tuscany, Italy. Can never (and couldn't again) find a position comfortable enough in which to sleep on the 7+ hour overnight, so we arrived a bit dazed to sunny Florence skies, bussed to the main train station on the edge of the historic downtown area, then navigated cobblestone sidewalks and streets the last mile by foot and rolling carryons past the Duomo to our B&B, which didn't stay our B&B for long. The place just wasn't right for a 25th anniversary celebration trip, and after an hour of the husband-wife managers yelling and screaming at each other (the way we took it that they carried on conversations), Mike went ... read more

Geo: 45.5118, -122.676Good night, Seattle! (All ye Frazier fans, and in observance of the 50th anniversary of the Space Needle. You, too, Kate and Nate.)Up here at the PDX Red Lion to save the early morning drive and park the car for the time we're gone.Should have packed our own skim milk and cookies . . . had to settle for 2% from the bar and granola instead. Also should have done one more walk through at home before leaving. Realized I felt a little naked by time we hit I-205 and looked down at my left hand and realized my wedding ring was still on the nightstand at home. Must be getting Charlie brain. Guess what's #1 on our shopping list when we get to Florence? I'm lucky that Sharon's so forgiving of all my ... read more

Geo: 52.7107, -8.87897LOOOOOOOOOOOONG travel day today.Getting to the Shannon Airport from Ennis was quick and easy. Our flights took us from Shannon (7:50am departure) to London-Heathrow to Minneapolis-St. Paul to Portland. We will arrive in Salem after 1:00am (or 8:00am Ireland time), making for a 24-hour trip. It'll be nice to see Lucy and sleep in our own bed.As we wind down this blog in the MSP airport listening to some John Whelan Irish accordion music, we have fresh, vivid memories of a wonderful vacation in a country of wonderfully friendly, welcoming, accommodating, genuine, culturally and spiritually rich people. The people and countryside made us feel instantly right at home, as if we were on a drive through Oregon. We feel blessed to have had this opportunity, and we've enjoyed sharing it with you and getting your comments.Slainte. ... read more
