On 17 August Mi Hyon and I returned to Langley AFB to formally retire from my second career working for the US Air Force. The first time I retired from active duty and this time around from Civilian Service, surely the last time I will retire. My friends from Air Combat Command provided me a truly memorable send off, for which Mi Hyon and I are eternally grateful. We stayed at Langley AFB FamCamp until we left for New England on 1 September for a two month stay.... read more

We left the banks on the Great Mississippi early after a pretty fierce storm and once again headed east for about 472 miles. The ride was largely uneventful and we stayed ahead of the storms. We didn't get much sleep the night before so the drive seemed longer than it was. We arrived at our Baileyton TN RV park right at 1700 and checked in. The park was great and we arrived early enough to take a walk and enjoy the beautiful weather. Mi Hyon made shrimp cocktails and some pasta, I opened the beer, and we had a relaxing dinner. After a little TV to catch up on the approaching weather we went to bed early. Final day, we woke up at our normal 0630, had breakfast, and prepared the rig for departure on the ... read more

Another very windy day...but the overcast sky was nice. The storms to the North are sure stirring up the wind. Today was a 487 mile journey, but for the most part the roads were great and traffic was OK. Once again Mi Hyon spelled me for about an 1.5 hours; after 22 days on the road I'm not sure I could drive that far without the break she gives me. We were making great time until we got within about 45 miles of West Memphis, then we hit a work zone with stopped traffic. This was the first time in 22 days we hit a traffic delay...now that's amazing! We were at a complete stop for about 20 minutes, but it gave us a chance to get up stretch our legs and use our mobile facilities ... read more

We made it to Dallas after a 380 mile journey against some amazing side winds; it hardly let up at all. Traveling across the Country in May has some distinct advantages when it comes to small crowds at the National Parks, availability in the RV parks, and for the most part the days are cool. However, the winds in May out west are tough...at least they were for me! We probably wrote this already, but there isn't much to see in terms of landscapes from Amarillo to Dallas, but the speed limits are high and the roads fairly good so we made great time in the Camp Boss. Our park, Shady Creek RV and Storage is located in Aubrey Tx and is one of the cleanest and best maintained parks we stayed in on the trip. ... read more

Today's drive was a short 280 miles in beautiful weather, there was a little wind but nothing much to write about. Right after leaving NM, the landscape quickly shifted from desert to grasslands then rolling hills to the flatest land we've seen on the trip. I'm not sure if it is due to lower altitude, but our mileage returned to 8.5 MPG. On the way into Colorado, the milage dropped to 8.4 MPG, not sure I can explain the difference. The Camp Boss MPG has historically been 8.5 whether I tow a vehicle or not. Today we were about 20 miles from Amarillo when we happened upon a mile-long feed lot w/ thousands of cattle just waiting around...before I could turn off the vent/AC the smell reached Mi Hyon. And I guess you could say it ... read more

Day 14 we drove in some very high winds (again) for 420 miles. Passed through a sand storm, saw a whole lot of open desert, and did I mention very high winds (60 MPH cross winds). Mi Hyon drove for about 1.5 hours and w/ the wind it was about all her wrist could handle, but just enough for me to clear my mind. We can honestly say there is very little once you pass Gallup NM (Rt 66) and ABQ. The one interesting landmark was the volcanic escarpment along I-40. Being a non-violent fissure eruption, lava flowed w/ an accumulation of sand and gravel up to 25,000 feet thick. The lava cooled and hardened, transforming into black volcanic rock all along the highway. It looked like the state had dumped a lot of asphalt along ... read more

Limited internet connectivity at the Grand Canyon, my phone does pretty well if I placed it in the right window of the RV, so there are 3 days covered in this blog. Day 11 - Sunday the 19th was a day of much needed rest; Mi Hyon and I hung around the Zion River RV resort and enjoyed some great weather. Many of you may not know, but Mi Hyon has a stream fetish and loves to sit by the river w/ her feet in the cold water. Add some Lager and it just doesn't get much better for her. For me it was nice to not have to drive anywhere until Monday...then it's a short 320 miles to the Grand Canyon... Day 12 - It's now Monday and we're on the road again w/ some ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Bryce Canyon May 19th 2013

We got a slow start this morning, but we enjoyed the easy pace. We ate a light breakfast and headed out for Bryce Canyon Nationl Park. To get there we had to drive through Zion NP and got to enjoy the the views again. We were not sure we wanted to go to another canyon park since we had seen so many and Bryce is only 90 miles from Zion. But, we didn't have anything else on the schedule so we packed Maggie into the car and headed north. There were about 3 changes in the environment along the way; from green pastures w/ slow meandering streams like Germany; a national forest; and a bright red canyon, but nothing prepared us for Bryce. I don't think there is another place on the planet that looks and ... read more

Day 8 was just a travel day. Mi Hyon once again drove a couple hours while I took a 30 minute nap, that always helps me stay sharp when driving and ready for the Garmin to mess us up! For the second time this trip, our Garmin GPS sent us off course. This time it was fairly easy to tell that it was wrong, since it wanted us to drive up a dirt mountain pass. The local Deputy showed up to ask if we were lost and let me know it would be a really bad idea to drive up the mountain pass w/ an RV...I thanked him for the advice, but kind of knew that anyway. Of course there was no where to turn around and I can't back up with a car attached. So ... read more

Day 7 began early with Maggie waking Mike up so she could walk him. She knows he needs to get up NLT 0630...to make sure he gets his walk. Maggie is so good about managing Mike's time she even managed to get him to brush her. After that we set up the grill to cook bacon, eggs, and blueberry pancakes, yum! After we cleaned up our breakfast dishes it was off to Canyonlands NP, Mike listened to MiHyon this time and we left Maggie in the rig for a nap. Canyonlands is amazing! The views far exceeded all our expectations and can't be described in words or pictures...although we still took over 300 pictures just to record our memories. Lucky for us, it was much cooler today, about 84 in Canyonlands and 92 in Moab. After ... read more
