(In the pictures zoom in on the graffiti, there are interesting messages to be read) The day started with a very windy drive from Quartzsite to the 24 Palms Spotlight Casino, the news says gusts hit 65 MPH, but we arrived safely. Right away we noticed the lush green grass at the entrance. I told Mi Hyon, "I bet Maggie will love having her feet in grass again! It's been quite a while!" Well, once we settled into the parking lot, I took her for a walk across the sand to the grass thinking, "Oh boy is she going to love this!" Well wrong! She immediately tried to drag me back into the sand and gravel because she wanted nothing to do with that green stuff. Not to be outdone, I dragged her into the grass ... read more

Quartzsite Arizona is one of those odd bucket list items for many RV'rs...us included. Whole winter dry camping in the desert has a unique appeal for some folks, however for us 4 days is good. Trust me 4 days was plenty. We spent our days hiking in the desert, enjoying the stars in the moonless dark nights, and of course visiting the vendors. It's incredible how much of the Milky Way can be seen in skies without moonlight or light pollution. Other than the ever-present wind and dust, there isn't much in Quartzsite to be truthful. Its normal 3500 person population explodes in the winter (especially in January). The town gets about a million visitors annually for the big-tent city that sets up with hundreds of vendors during the winter months. Thankfully we arrived after the ... read more

The ride into Arizona from El Paso was clear, sunny, but very windy. So much so that it was a lot like sailing a boat, keep the steering wheel pulled sharp left to lean the rig into the wind then quickly adjust when wind stops. It was a little tiring with 30-40 MPH cross winds steady throughout the 290 mile trip...my wrist and shoulder knew I had been in a fight that evening. Other than the wind, the drive was much like the rest of the high desert we've travelled over the past couple weeks. That is until we entered the Texas Canyon in Arizona...wow all of a sudden there is a whole valley of large granite-like boulders precariously stacked upon each other. The Texas Canyon Rest Stop has become a tourist attraction in its own ... read more

We arrived in El Paso on Monday 2 Feb to some of the most beautiful weather of the trip. First, I had to get a musical ear worm out of my head, old Marty Robbins song about "West Texas Town of El Paso". I'm pretty sure Mom listened to Marty Robbins on the old RCA record player when we lived on Lockbourne AFB. I know I've never listened to Marty Robbins. Anyway, I finally got rid of it when connecting to WIFI...someone named their SSID "Puff the Magic Dragon"...so you know how that turns out ;-( We decided on this stop to rest and catch up with RV related chores. Following a hydraulic leak in the jacks, the sensor would show jacks down and alarm, so to work around this we'd remove the fuse. I'm a ... read more

Today's plan included, seeing Carlsbad Caverns, Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and Sitting Bull Falls. The in the past few days we have driven about 400 miles and it was starting to tire me more than I had expected, so Mi Hyon insisted on driving today. It was a great help and fun to sit as a passenger just taking in the scenery without having to watch the road. The day amounted to a marathon touring effort that was as rewarding as it was exhausting. We left the RV around 9:30 for Carlsbad Caverns and arrived in about 45 minutes, well ahead of the crowd that started arriving when we were finishing up. Words and pictures can never describe the beauty of the Caverns!! The Park Service has done an amazing job laying out the paths, the ... read more

White Sands is truly one of the worlds greatest and rarest of natural wonders. The park's 275 square miles of dazzling white gypsum dunes can be seen from miles up into the Sacramento Mountains and the Jefferson National Forest. As we drove down the valley leaving the snow-covered town of Cloudcroft at 6200 feet, in the distance it looked as if another great snow had fallen on the Chihuahuan Desert some 20+ miles away. Unlike many of the parks we've visited, White Sands is dog friendly and the dunes are open for exploration and fun. There are very few restrictions on where you can wander and if you do get disoriented, you can always follow your foot prints back. It was a warm and sunny (78 degree) day when Mi Hyon, Maggie and I wandered into ... read more

Today we headed off to the World Famous UFO museum in Roswell NM, location of an alleged UFO crash in 1947. A rancher discovered debris in a sheep pasture he was working in and that kicked of a 70 year dialogue and debate on what was found some 7 decades ago. The museum does a great job presenting formerly classified documents and death-bed statements to justify their assertion that in addition to debris from a space craft; there was the bodies of 4 extraterrestrial beings found as well. They lay their case out well and add in enough touristy stuff to make the museum a really fun stop along our cross-country expedition. We half expected the museum to be a complete tourist trap, but were pleasantly surprised by how professionally it is put together. While walking ... read more

North America » United States » Texas » Marfa February 1st 2018

After a long day traveling through Big Bend, we decided to see local or near local stuff. In West Texas local is 90 miles or so, heck folks out here have to travel 90 miles to go to the grocery store. So with that in mind we did the "local stuff". First we set off to see one of the items we had on our bucket list...a faux Prada store in the middle of nowhere. Now don't laugh, it is so ridiculous, that it has to be seen to be believed and it was worth the trip. It's a little like another of our other bucket list items checked off in 2013, the Cadillac ranch. Both are fun to see as a unique art statements. The "store" sits a couple miles outside the tiny almost ghost ... read more

I want to say right up front the pictures don't do justice to the view; the park is breathtaking in size, distance, and unique beauty. Words and pictures can't begin to describe it! The park is a little like driving along the bottom of the grand canyon, at the canyon we saw the river and surrounding land from high above. In this park, we are at the river level and looking up at the mountain ranges surrounding us. One of the first things we noticed when entering the park is what is not there...fences. Since leaving the San Antonio area, we have not seen a single stretch of land without a fence and private property sign. Some of these ranches cover many miles along the road and as far off as the horizon. I don't think ... read more

What a day it was here on our first full day outside Big Bend National Park. We had two close calls that could have ended our trip, but both turned out well. Within minutes of arriving here, our Maggie got a little too close to a cactus before Mi Hyon could yank her back. Well surprise she got a thorn in her nose and again before Mi Hyon could react she used her tongue to grab it then swallow it. Mi Hyon frantically tried to get it from her mouth but it went right down. I just can't imagine how it did not get stuck in her throat (see picture)! So what now...well I searched the internet for guidance and advice, but there wasn't too much there (what was there was scarey)...I guess most dogs are ... read more
