It was a really early start today. Up at 4.35, left at 5am. We had 3 mini buses to take us down the mountain to Mr Pandas Hostel to pick up our backpacks. We then set off to the first bus stop. It is always difficult making sure we can all fit in the bus with our backpacks on! We had about an hour or so on the first bus, then off and onto the second one. This was only a short journey but the walk to get their was about half an hour, and let me just point out that at that time in the morning with no breakfast, or a cup of tea, and I am carrying about 17k now, (due to dumping some stuff!), isn't easy! After another walk, we finally arrived at ... read more

Day 10 - Going rural Cynthia, Abbie, Gloria had a late night making sense of 'stuff' for a couple of hours! ..... And Abbie was only looking for her glasses! We had a lie in this morning - 9am. All shifted and sorted by 10.30, then out into 3 mini buses to head for Quinling mountain. This mountain is an important point in China as it continues from Tibet plateau and divides north from south China. This is also a huge cultural divide of the way the two ranges of people live. We are staying in a rural farm. The bus journey was like a series from Truckers! We drove to nearly 1500k high. It was narrow wining roads with lots of beeping and braking! ... But the driver seemed very confident!.... And we arrived safely. ... read more

Day 9 - Terracotta Army and the Muslim quarter Up at 6.30, reasonable breakfast at the hostel this morning, then at 8am we set off to catch the public bus to go to see the Terracotta Army. For the first time, we came together as a group and got to the meeting point on time....yayyyy It was about an hour and a half bus journey with only one change, but with 118 of us plus two guides, that's not a straight forward task. There is about a 15 minute walk once you actually get past the ticket point. It is very tourist based. My eyes were are all over the place as there is so much to look at! We finally got there. First we watched a film on how it was discovered and then excavated. ... read more

Day 8. - Arriving in Xian and cycling to the Ming Dynasty Walls The overnight train was a diddle this time. I think we are all getting used to it! At 10pm the lights went out, we all seemed to go straight over! I woke up at 6.40 am. I think my stomach seems to have settled now. I daren't eat anything substantial though! I had 3 dry garibaldi type breakfast biscuits, to be on the safe side, with a cup of green tea! Lets see what today brings! Oooohhhh, Di, and anyone else who watches Idiot Abroad, when we were out on bikes in Yangshuo, we rode passed the tourist attraction where they have a village of dwarfs, kind of living there and doing entertainment. I think it was called I Pocket sized Kingdom or ... read more

Day 7 - Panda breeding research Centre and the Leshan giant Buddha We had another early start today. Up at 6.15 for a 7o'clock leave. I had ordered scrambled egg and toast as I knew it was going to be a long day. One room full slept in which caused bother, but we managed to catch up time. We saw quite a few pandas of varying ages at the research centre, and then 3 red pandas ( which I didn't realise existed!) it was interesting to see them; I was pleased I went, but when you've seen, you've seen them. It was a zoo setting, so you were very limited as to what you could actually see. We left there at about 11am, about half the group had chosen to go to see the Leshan giant ... read more

Day 6 - The sunset at Yangshuo and the night train to Cheng Du Some of us got up at 5am to see the sunset before leaving Yangshuo. It was pitch black, and we were not 100% sure of where we were going! I do have a torch in my bag, but didn't think to bring it, and neither did anyone else! Sally gave us vague directions last night. Nevertheless less, off we set! I did feel this morning that my back hurts more; time has passed since the hot cupping, I feel that I have been hit repeatedly with a big stick, and I don't seem to be having any benefits for all this discomfort! We found the park entrance ok, entered, and walked on. We were to look for the pagoda at the side ... read more

Day 5 - A relaxing day, and a 'hot cupping' experience I have felt like I have been rushing and on the go since leaving work on Friday, so last night and today I have allowed myself some quiet time! I started by having an easy early night.... Hhhmmmmmm.... Enjoyed that long sleep too. I started watching The Hobbit on my iPad, but didn't actually get to see very much of it! All the young ones were partying in the bar, here at Monkey Jaynes. Get on it....whilst you physically and mentally can! That's what I think! So I started off this morning with a lush breakfast. Scrambled egg with toast, cucumber and tomato..... Fruit with yoghurt, mango juice, and then caPer it off with a cup of fresh green tea! I sat there for, what ... read more

Day 4 - Hike up to Moon Hill We did manage a bit of a lay in this morning 8.10! Whilst waiting my turn for the shower, I woke myself up with a nice cuppa. We went off for breakfast in Monkey Jaynes, my omlette was nice, but not everyone's meals came in time. We had to leave before theirs came as we needed to set off for Moon Hill at 9.30. The first part of the home was to pick up our bikes. We had an 8km bike ride to get there. Moon Hill was just as I expected it to be! I was thinking about Nadia and Vietnam, all the way up. There were 8 if in the group, and Sally, the guide. It was a hard, uphill hike. There are 900 steps. It ... read more

Day 3 - leaving Hong Kong for Yangshuo The leaving journey was a shock! The backpack was a killer: far too heavy! Three underground train journeys, then an overground train which took about 2 hours later, we were all struggling. We crossed the China border which was all a bit surreal on foot. The rep was stuck in traffic, so we were hanging in the unknown for a while, we were unsure if the overnight bus would wait for us, but again, it all worked out in the end. Finally, the rep arrived and 5 taxis took us to the waiting, and very much delayed, overnight bus. We boarded the bus and took our bed for the night. I was pleasantly surprised with the overnight stint. It gave me a chance to catch up on the ... read more

Day 2 - Victoria Peak A good nights sleep in a room for 9. That's a first! Got up ok and checked out of Yes Inn. We are going for a hike up/ to Victoria Peak. I did say it won't be about the food this time, but I had coconut bread, and raisin bread for breakfast! I was starving as I didn't get to eat last night! I would have eaten anything! We caught a tram the the bottom of Victoria Peak. I started we'll on the hike, but dipped out and got the tram! I decided I needed to see China before committing Hari Kari! It was just about a vertical climb. Myself and Louisa decided to take the easier option. All I can say is it was a good choice! The scenery from ... read more
