We had a right laugh last night in our room. We decided to do some item swapping! Before the trip stated we agreed to bring an item that represented our home town. I got Zoe's gift from Margate- a linen bag, a stick of rock and some postcards. Zoe got my Hull College polo shirt. Rob got Laura's Mhaigheo man, and she got Rob's Nun game!!! It was very funny at the time; it was one of his situations were..... You just had to be there to know how funny it was! Jason couldn't find his 'pebble' from Brixham, then Josh got out his musical Justin Beber toothbrush. Both Josh's and Rob's gifts bore no resemblance to their city of Hemel Hempstead, but that mad the whole thing even funnier! We ended up with a room ... read more

We all had a much needed sleep in this morning. Our room got up at 10.30. Laura, Jason and I went out for a walk to find somewhere for breakfast. We found a shop that was a cafe and bakery. We all managed to find something we wanted. I had pizza and a peanut butter sandwich! Followed by the best latte ever. The only thing that was really weird was that all the foods we picked were sugar coated! After breakfast we went back to the hostel to meet with Jessie our new guide. Only 6 of us: Laura, Jason, Rob, Coralee, Adam and I, ended up going with her. We realised by the end of the day that having a smaller group was intact really beneficial. It was much more relaxed. We set off for ... read more

Well, that was the well thought out plan! We got a taxi, went and picked Neil's dad up, and off we wen to the of place. I couldn't bloody believe it..... when I opened the iPad ....... It was working fine ! I felt a not stupid, but Neil had seen it before so he explained. But with it being ok, there as nothing they could do. We got a return taxi and went back to the hostel. On returning, I went to turn it on....the screen had gone black again..... Gutted.... Again! I have now given up on it ! By lunchtime people ... read more

I got up at around seven ish this morning. Breakfast is at eight, but I wanted to get my. Laundry washed early so that it dries before leaving. We are expecting another 40 degrees again today so that shouldn't be a problem. Breakfast was good today. We had toast, cold boiled eggs, peanut butter, jam, water melon and some cold turnip stuff. Everyone tucked in! It was a bit of a treat having peanut butter and jam! 12 of the group went for a wall after breakfast. We knew it was only going to be a short one due to the heat, but to be honest, I felt like I just needed a bit of down time after all the ravelling yesterday. Laura, Zoe, Louisa, Mel and Abbie also gave themselves the morning off. We all ... read more

Day 17 - Hangzhou I was very pleased that I had hot well prepared for the journey by getting a Starbucks sandwich and fruit salad for my tea on the train as I really enjoyed it! I struggled sleeping last night due to coughing! But sadly so did the others on my cubicle! I was coughing all night until I decided to sleep sat up a bit, then I finally slept. The night train was ok, but not a comfy as the last one. We arrived in Hangzhou at about 8.30am. We were met by our new guides Miranda and Crystal at the station. We were taken to a cafe for breakfast. I didn't have any as I just want hungry. I had taken some croissants on the train, so had already eaten. After breakfast we ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Tian'anmen August 7th 2013

Day 16 - Chairman Mao's Mausoleum, leaving Beijing, night train to HangzhouToday I totally missed an activity .... By choice! At 4.30 there was an option to go to Tiananmen Square to watch the raising of the flag. I decided not to go? I did see the raised flag, and took photos of it a couple of days ago (day 14)..... I think!I decided that it was mot worth a 4.30 get up to see it actually being raised! The 7 that did go said we didn't miss anything. They said that there were thousands of people there to watch, as apparently, there are everyday. The only reason that they went was because they hadn't been to bed due to drinking all night! At 7.45 I did join the next activity with Laura, Andrea, Sintje, Louisa and ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Temple of Heaven August 5th 2013

Day 15 - Temple if Heaven and Pearl Market I woke up this morning with my ,'tiger balm covered tissue' over my face! I am very relieved, I feel a lot better today. I did the right thing missing Sintje's birthday meal in order to rest and recover! I am still snotty, but I can deal with that! All the reports were that they all had a great time. I had breakfast with Laura before setting off for the Temple of Heaven. It is a huge park area. It is very communal with areas of singing, dancing and general get togethers. The area is a complex of religious buildings. The numbers 3 and 9 are reoccurring throughout the whole area. It is early just now, so it is not too hot....yet! After we had gone through ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Forbidden City August 4th 2013

We were up at 4.30am for the sunrise. We hiked up the side of the wall which is all unrecognisable shrubbery with am overgrown path.... Of sorts! The path led us to a tumble down area of the original wall which we climbed up. I am fairly certain, no I fact I am certain that there has been no health and safety risk assessment done on this activity! But I am afraid, yet again, we never saw the sunrise! Although the walk did wake me up! To be fair, apart from the effects of the cold, the camping event wasn't too bad! My blocked sinuses and cold have definitely got worse over night, but after being vertical for a while, they did seem to improve! I felt so poorly through the night, I am hoping that ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Great Wall of China August 4th 2013

Day 13 - Overnight train to Beijing, Great Wall, camping out We had luxury in the first class part of the overnight train, that's not 'real' luxury, just luxury after what we have been used to! it's only a 4 to a compartment carriage, so you could actually sit up without banging your head. A partition so that you could actually close the door, a carpet! two cushions, and a thicker mattress! Now that's luxury! We arrived in Beijing at about 7am to be met by our new guide..... Noodle. He took us to the hostel where we left our bags upstairs whilst we had something to eat, a shower and got sorted out. We then had a couple of hours to explore the surrounding areas. Beijing seems so clean and much more civilised, but then ... read more

Asia » China » Henan » Zhengzhou August 2nd 2013

Big day today, We have lots to do, and it will all be physically challenging! I have been dreading this walk! We are going to watch the Shaolin Monks perform in their performance area in the Shaolin Temple area. We got mini buses to the main area, then that is the end of being spoilt. We set of for the performance. It was unbelievable. They are so graceful, yet so strong, and some are very young. The school has about 8000 students being taught Kung Fu there. Fabio and Gloria went on a volunteers, they both did really well. Fabio won! After the performance we set off for Dharma cave where a nun has been living and meditating for four years. It is wwaaaaaaayyyyyyy up towards Wuru Peak on Song Mountain. It was such a hard ... read more
