This is the day we went to the Royal Castles of Bavaria. First stop was at the castle of Linderhof, near Oberammergau. We had to walk about 400m from the coach park, through the castle grounds to the small castle built by "Mad" King Ludwig II of Bavaria. I was surprised by the crowds already here at 10.55am. As the tours are "controlled" guided tours - we had to wait about 15 minutes before our grouyp was allowed to enter (it was unusual for the German "system" to be running late!). It's only a short tour of the castle - about 30 minutes - because it is the smalled of those built, and we only get to see around 8 rooms. Due to the fact it's winter - several other attractions such as the Moorish Kiosk ... read more

The day everyone has been waiting for..!! The village was abuzz with locals and visitors alike. Whilst the 25th Dec is not observed as the tradition "Christmas Day" that we in Australia/UK/USA/NZ do...we have our "traditional" Christmas Day lunch at the Hotel Central. Kathie and I spent some time adding Christmas decorations to the Christmas Table - including some Cracker Jacks for the younger children. (we did this last year for everyone - but as they are "made in China" thingys that requires some time and patience to put together - the cardboard "jack", the joke, the party hat and then the ribbon ties - it makes for aching fingers, so we just did enough for the younger ones). Santa had been caught up in the floods in outback QLD, so he sent 2 bags of ... read more

This day is a planned "rest" day for the group. Those who wanted to go skiing were able to do that just 200m from the hotel. Others strolled through the village centre, enjoying the Christmas Markets, local stores or a 5 minute walk to the Olympic Centre to watch skaters, cross country skiers and other visitors enjoying Seefeld. This evening was our "gala" dinner at the hotel. 24 Dec. is when the locals gather with other family members to share company, open personal gifts and just enjoy this special time of the year. In the Hotel Central, we gathered with other hotel guests to hear a local musician play Christmas music, then see the lighting of the Christmas tree, and also to hear a Christmas Soty about "Friendship". First it was told in German by Yvonne ... read more

A sleep in this morning before we departed for Italy - jusy 45 minutes from Seefeld. it was not snowing today - but as we climbed up toward the Brenner pass - the temperature droipped from+7C to +0.5C - just cold enough to get some snow flurries. Our destination was Bressanone/Brixen, a town of around 15,000 and just 30 kms from the border. They have a neat Christmas MArket here, as well as an impressive cathedral and monastery. Due to it being so close to X-mas, we encountered a traffic jam getting into the old town area. What should have taken us 10 minutes took around 25 minutes. The town was crowded with other sightseers. There was not as much snow as last year - when we saw several snowmen that had been built in the ... read more

A short drive from Seefeld down to the InnValley - with spectacular view of both mountain chains that line the valley. On arrival in Innsbruck we met our guide Willie, and started a walking tour through this small and historic part of Innsbruck. Historic buildings, the Christmas Markets, the Little Golden Roof and the Dom (Cathedral) all make up the very small medieval part of the town. Free time allowed everyone to explore the markets and shops before we made our way back to Hotel Central in Seefeld. Tonight we travelled approx. 3 kms from seefeld - up into the mountains - to the Wildmoosalm - a wooden hut that once offered refuge to animails, later persons, in time of bad weather. Today it is a well-known restaurant that is enjoyed by locals and visitors both ... read more

This morning we had a guided walking tour of the old town with Harald - one of Salzburg's noted specialist guides (Sound of Music expert) - whi pointed out landmarks such as Mozart's birthplace, the fortress Hohensalzburg, various locations used for the Sound of Music movie, and the centrepiece of the old town - the Dom (cathedral). The group then had time to enjoy the Christmas Markets, watch children enjoying themselves on the small ice rink in Mozartplatz and browse the stores along the Getriedegasse. Mid afternoon wedeparted for the scneic drive through the heart of the Austrian Alps - passing renowned ski resorts like St. Johann, Kitzbuehel, Kirchberg, Ellmai, Going and Soell. We approached Seefeld - our Christmas destination - just on dusk, complete with twinkling lights and a special "glow" from the snow that ... read more

Left a cold Vienna for Melk - a small town 1 hrs drive west and on the banks of the Danube River. This former Babenburg stronghold dating back to the 11th century was handed over to the Benedictines - who still run the complex which today offers schooling to more than 900 students from the 23 parishes surrounding Melk. The 2 most impressive features of the moastery are the library and the church - which has more than 4 kgs of gold leaf covering the religious statues and decorations in the church. Fter Melk, it was lunch, then the journey to Oberndorf, 30kms northwest of Salzburg, to have a private tour and performance of the carol "Silent Night" - which was first performed in the chapel of Oberndorf in 1818. This is truly a moving experience ... read more

The snow eased up today. The weather forecaster was correct. Blue skies, no snow, but cold. It was -5C when we left for our tour to Bratislava. We arrived in just over an hour - the new autobahn from Vienna to Bratislava cuts about 25 minutes off the drive - and found our guide "Big George" waiting for us in the appointed place. A quick trip up to the castle..but only a short stay as the wind was bitterly cold. Fortunately down in the old town it was a little "warmer" - no wind - but still -6C. Had the walking tour for about 45 minutes, then headed in the Irish pub for some lunch and to enjoy the open fire. After, a walk through the marketplace, bought a few Christmas presents for the group, then ... read more

The first day of the tour - a drive around the "Ring" strasse of the old city, then continuing out to Schonbrunn Palace. Our guide Emi does a great tour through the former summer palace of the Hapsburgs. After the tour - a short drive to the Old Vienna Schnaps Museum to learn about the difference between "Schnaps" and "liqueur". Then the most important part - the tasting of all the schnaps produced by the company. Then it was back to the hotel and free time. Being a Saturday - Vienna was crowded with tour buses and a bazillion tourists. I took Kathie to some small street Christmas Markets in the area known as "Spittelberg" - 3 narrow streets lined with the stalls seeling handcrafts, food, schnaps, wine, gluhwein and more.. The good thing at these ... read more

Ouch. This has been one of the coldest starts for a tour in Vienna we have had. Temp. was onlyt -6C..but the wind-chill factor must have been around -15C. Bloody cold. I bought an extra hat - a ripper for 10 euros. On exiting the store - wearing the hat - I walked past a derro wearing the same hat. I gave him the "thumbs-up" and smiled at him - to which he replied in English - "this hat is the best thing I have bought all winter"....! Took a couple of the ladies to Parndorf Outlet shopping Centre before we came back to the city for the Welcome drink and Dinner. ... read more
