Time to leave the hustle and bustle of Saigon and head north to Da Nang. In relation to the "war" - Da Nang is where the first American combat troops landed in 1965 - and where the last combat troops departed in 1973. Da Nang is the gateway to the ancient port town of Hoi An 34 kms to the south - now classified under UNESCO - and one of the major tourist destinations in Vietnam. Our home for the next 6 months is in the district of Cam Thanh in Hamlet #5. It's midway between the ancient town and the beach of Cua Dai - a distance of approximately 5 kms. It's the same area where we did a "test run" last year - and is only 300m from our last accommodation. Whilst here last ... read more

We arrived in Saigon, and spending 2 nights in the Pullman Hotel - courtesy of Pat Sheahan who won the prize in a raffle held last year during the Long Tan celebrations. An interesting 5-star hotel in a convenient location. We were offered an upgrade to a junior suite - which we had no hesitation accepting. This upgrade included use of the "lounge" - where drinks and cookies are available throughout the day - and then a 2-hour buffet and cocktail session in the evenings. Other than using the "prize" - our main stop-over here was to visit the orphanage in Phu My - about 55ms southeast of Saigon. We had $1500 to donate to the orphanage in the form of needed daily supplies as well as cash so they could by essentials that we didn't ... read more

The "new" house is great. Very "western-style" and on one level - which means no stairs!! Friends Peter and Kerrie live upstairs and it's the apartment we were meant to have from 24 Aug. but now I am happy that we have been given the 2-bedroom on the ground floor. No balcony - but then again it gets too hot to really enjoy sitting outside. The AC unit in the bedroom and the 3-speed fan keep the temperature inside the house at a very comfortable level. There is a chook pen a few meters from the front door - but these ones are quieter than at the homestay. The owner tells me a small splash pool will be built next year - but sounds like we won't be able to rent this apartment again :(. The ... read more

Well - I left one cock-a-doodle-do alarm clock behind - to find another at the new abode. This one isn't so loud - and it's not right outside my window. It was enough to wake me - and let me know that I will need to get used to this new mattress. Yes - a little bit of ache in the lower back. Now - it may not be the mattress. I have heard that as you get older - more aches and pains start to creep in. This morning is a new "adventure" - as I no longer have a bicycle to ride to Cua Dai beach. Free bicycles are standard with all homestays in Hoi An. Don't stay at one that doesn't have them - otherwise you are relegated the Shanks's Pony or a ... read more

I am up at rooster crow - and throw on my usual gear for the beach swim. Black athletic shorts and a red singlet that was given as a gift from the fols at our favourite restaurant - Vina Ngong - for being such good and regular customers. It's been years since I have worn a singlet. I think the last time was in the military. Anyways - it's good enough to wear on the morning commute to my little beach. when I get back to homestay after the swim - it's easy to hand wash/rinse in the shower to get rid of the salt. I complete the packing and be ready to move around 12 - which is when I told the manager I would move. Minh's parents had invited me for lunch to make ... read more

In a way it was sad to be leaving the homestay. I had special treatment - meaning I got a good rate and also got invited to a few lunched provided by the staff. But I was looking forward to getting out of that room. I need more space. The unit we are renting is the same price as the homestay - except at the homestay we would get breakfast - and of course not have to pay for water or electricity, and get clean towels daily. Small pleasures to give up in order to have a nice "house" to live in. I go for lunch across the road at my friend's little local eating place. I am reluctant to call it a "restaurant" - just because it's lacking a few little things that are the ... read more

Morning activities as usual - nothing out of the "ordinary". Good friends from Bathurst mentioned that were contemplating a package to Vietnam that included 2 nights in Saigon and 6 nights at Naman Resort. This 5-star property is around 12 months old and located close to midway between Hoi An and Danang City. After Breakfast I do my daily riutine of checking e-mails and FB - then I decide in the afternoon I will ride moto to the Naman to check it out. I get a call from my friend Chau who tells me the owner of the apartment I will move in to has invited me for a party at his house (next to the apartment). With a couple of hours to spare - I decide to ride to Naman - then get back in ... read more

Got my early morning wake-up call from Nguyen Cock-a-Doodle-Do!!! Contacts in, drink of water, shorts and singlet on and it's off to join the stream of vehicles heading toward Cua Dai beach. I arrive at my special swimming beach and there are some Vietnamese taking their morning swim/bath. I do my stuff for 45-minutes - then I decide to go for a little extra bicycle ride through one of the little hamlets nearby. This one stretches all the way down to the fishing boat port and the wharf from where all the Cam Island boats depart (about 2km). Most hamlets consist of one main street - usually only about 3m wide - and off of this run little alleyways that are barely 2m wide. It's along these little alleyways that you find the "residential" part of ... read more

The early morning commute to the place of swimming was uneventful. As per yesterday's blog - it's pretty much a case of dodgem bikes/cars/people. You do see some unusual sights when riding around. A good percentage of the bikes have been on the road for decades. Honda and Yamaha look like they were the vehicle of choice. Most are either 110cc of 125cc. It's only the younger people that have had enough money to buy the more modern bikes. It was only recently that the Vietnamese government allowed engine sizes greater that 125cc. The train of thought was that as the local roads were so bad, there so many bikes - it was considered to be a safety issue and if you limited the size of the engines that it would be safer. FAIL!! However - ... read more

Not sure why - but the wake-up rooster got me woken up at 04.30am, Still dark outside - so not sure why he thought he could let fly with that horrible cock-a-doodle-doo. Perhaps he is a nightwatch-rooster and there was a fox in the henhouse. Anyways - I was able to go back to sleep again but it meant I did not awake naturally until 06.30am - which made me a little late for my morning swim. I try to get the same bicycle each day - after adjusting the seat for my height and making sure the tyres are capable of transporting a 100kg payload - but some other persons in the homestay randomly take bikes and change the seat settings - which means I never get the same bike 2-days in a row. It's ... read more
