Had this little getaway booked for a few months...got a great deal through Timeshare and cheap airfares so why not? We had a very early 6.05a.m. flight from Melbourne so were off by 7.30a.m. in Hobart, couldn't book into our accom so decided to head to Richmond to check out this beautiful historical little town, a cool crisp morning so lovely for walking around Richmond. Richmond is quite an iconic site and only about 25klms north east of Hobart in the Coal River Valley region and that bridge is recognisable all over Australia. John spotted the bakery so we opted for Curried Scallop pies and coffee for breaky. Later in the afternoon booked into our accommodation at the Ramada Seven Mile Beach Resort, were pleasantly surprised a lovely three bedroom, two bathroom apartment set on a ... read more

Made it to Paris no problems and got to the meeting point for the boat at the Pullman Hotel and were taken by bus to Avalon Creativity on the Seine, absolutely beautiful boat.Brrrrhhh! the air has a real nip to it, only 17 degrees. Sailed at around 6.00p.m. and woke up in Vernon. From here buses took us to our optional tours, we chose Monets House and Garden, it was sensational, but what made it that much more interesting, was our guide Pia, a fantastic storyteller and puts so much passion into telling you about everything...she obviously loves her job! The gardens are only open from March to October so we are the first Avalon tour to visit for the season, and of course the gardens change with the season, so if we went back in ... read more

Another couple of great days. Wednesday night we were invited to a wine tasting by the resort which was quite a fun night and we met two different groups of Americans, very nice people and had a great chat, sometimes you just click with certain people. Thursday morning headed over into Spain to visit our favourite sherry winery with the famous Pedro Ximenez grapes, also visited Sandemans as well but went to buy our favourite Pedro Ximenez El Candado, $14 a glass (small glass) at Adrian Richardson's restaurant in Carlton, around $37 in bottleshop and $11.80 a bottle here, amazing!!! Took us 3 hrs to get down to Jerez and then after the winery visit drove back to Seville to stay for the afternoon and night, had a wonderful couple of days in Seville, has such ... read more

Well had forgotten what a flight that is to get to Europe. Around 30 hours door to door, left home 7.30p.m. for a 10.30pm flight and arrived at our hotel down in Albufeira 30 hours later. Flight delayed one hour from Melbourne, 15 hours to Dubai, including being in a 1 hour holding pattern over Dubai before landing due to congestion, then another hour late leaving Dubai because of other planes being late and their passengers joining us on the flight down to Lisbon, so all in all two hours late to Lisbon and then getting our hire car and a two and a half hour drive down to Albufeira, thank god it was Sunday in Lisbon, two brain dead people in heavy traffic would have been a nightmare....light traffic what a sigh of relief! Raining ... read more

This was a short unplanned jaunt over to Bali for our mate Reg Worthington's 60th, a surprise party on Lembongan Island on Friday 3rd March. After having got cheap Tiger flights and then they cancelled we then had to bite the bullet and buy a more expensive flight with Garuda, so flew to Bali on Gloria's birthday on the 27th February. Birthday dinner at Char Char which was very good value with a great array of steaks and seafood. Great night had by all. For the next few days laid low as Reg didn't know we had come over to Bali and the last thing we wanted was for him to spot on his way to work or going out to a job somewhere. Friday 3rd March came around very quickly and we were collected from ... read more

Docked last night at this cute little village Thayet Myo and went ashore for a walk around town all very quiet. This morning a hive of activity as the local market was on and people going about their daily chores and shopping, then headed off for our excursion on horse drawn carts...don't want to miss anything but my god was it a rough ride...both got off with cracked backs and our horse played up something terrible....tried to bolt and the driver took all his might to pull it up but was very pleasant ride through the countryside out to the first ever golf course in Myanmar(affiliated with St Andrews Scotland) don't know how many people play here ...looked a bit abandoned to us but the greens all looked pretty good and we had a putting competition ... read more

Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Irrawaddy River December 6th 2016

Tuesday pulled into Salay a 7,000 resident village founded in 13thCentury with very British colonial feel with lovely preserved old buildings and in fact our tour director has renovated a beautiful building and it now houses a museum, restaurant and shop. Had a great feel to the place with lots of young novice monks around town. There was procession of all decorated vehicles and everyone dressed in beautiful dress, a ceremony for the new novice monks and also for the young girls ear piercing. We visited a beautiful old wooden monastery designed as a copy of the Crown Prince House of Mandalay. Great to see a slightly different town. Afternoon sailing the Irrawaddy. Wednesday Magway by trishaw to local market. This is quite a big city 500,000 people. Great way to see around Magway in the ... read more

Monday sailed downstream and across river to another little village on the river at Tan Kyi and were driven up a big hill to where another huge pagoda is perched overlooking the river and the plains of Bagan. This pagoda had recently been re done with gold leaf…it just amazes us so much how much money is spent on these pagodas. Tan Kyi is very rich in petroleum and oil, saw lots of women carrying big drums of oil on their heads, illegal oil wells done by hand by the locals to make some extra cash, if there is a raid they can close up their tents in 1/2hr and cover with rock….this area is where Burmese Petroleum, BP, originated when the British ruled.... read more

Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Bagan December 5th 2016

Bagan is the must see place for everyone that comes to Myanmar, it is quite incredible and so different, over 3,000 pagodas, stupors and temples are studded through the plains of Bagan. It is the worlds largest archeological site and was established in the 11th century. The Indian government is now helping them strip some of the pagodas back to show the original paintings below the layers of lime plaster. There is a lot of renovation work to be done around here. A couple of the pagodas we visited had some bamboo scaffolding around them as there was some damage from an earthquake here in August. We took an ox cart ride this morning with all the oxen and carts done up in their ceremonial gear, through the dusty countryside winding in and out of different ... read more

Enjoying the boat very much, though we are off and on a lot! Its like coming back to an oasis, our room is so nice and they have all Loccitane products which are so fresh and beautiful, the staff are so friendly and attentive and all Burmese. We are lucky enough to have the executive chef on board who looks after the whole fleet of 11 boats for this company (german guy), all their lamb, beef and lobster comes from New Zealand and they source most other food locally, our tour director is from US and been here for 2 years and group leader is British. They really have everything set out great and the food has been amazing. We try and eat a lot of Burmese food as its so tasty but there are lots ... read more
