Europe » Spain » Basque Country » San Sebastián October 29th 2018

Left Haro Monday morning....very cold....and as soon as we drove a little way out of town could see snow on the small hills and that just got worse the closer we got to Bilbao, sleet, ice on the road and lots of snow. Wanted to go via Bilboa to see the Guggenheim and we were not disappointed, glad we made the detour there. The drive from Bilboa to San Sebastian was even hairier......a lot of the roads were covered in icy sludge and snow....quite slippery in parts but we finally limped into San Sebastian around 3.30pm. Our apartment is in the middle of the city.....a beautiful place...we cannot believe the value we are getting with our AirB&B choices...we are on the 6th Floor overlooking the city.....our host Andrea is just lovely....she tells me their whole family ... read more

Europe » Spain » Galicia » Santiago de Compostela October 23rd 2018

The extra couple of days in Santiago De Compostela have been fantastic....took a day trip BY BUS...to Finisterre and Muxia on the coast about an hour out. So nice to sit back and relax and take everything in....a fabulous day down on the Atlantic Ocean with lunch stop in Finisterre enjoying some lovely seafood. Visited the only waterfall in Europe that flows into the sea, the largest horreo in the world (the buildings set off the ground to dry out all their grains etc), beautiful to see some sea for a change. Have had some great meals here too, have the best breaky place within 50 metres, bar 10 metres and now know that Spain is the biggest comsumer of gin, tried a couple too and very nice, they ask you when you want them to ... read more

Europe » Spain » Galicia » Sarria October 20th 2018

Well the 6 hours on the train went pretty quickly, the first 2 hrs was on the fast lines and that flew by, but then kicked into the slow track which did take another 4hrs to do just what we had done on the fast lines. So glad we had an extra night in Sarria, the train did not arrive until 7pm so that gave us the following day to explore around Sarria, with a population of 13,500 it is big enough to have lots of restaurants and bars but small enough to get around and see everything and the people were very welcoming. If it wasn't for the Camino Walk a lot of these towns would find it hard to survive, Sarria has become a major starting point for the Camino for people who only ... read more

Long, long flight to Dubai and then onto Madrid arriving about 23hrs later. Arrived Mulwala Friday night, our timeshare spot for the next few days is Capri Waters Resort, lovely two bedroom apartment right on the water. Mick and Noni joined us for Friday and Saturday, great to catch up with them but quite a drive for them from Moorabbin. Had a meal in the unit on Friday night and then headed down to Tungamah, Devenish and Goorambat to see the painted silos, great sights and lovely to see these little villages coming alive with beautiful art, then onto the wineries at Rurtherglen. Before embarking on this had a beautiful pie at Parkers Bakery in the main street of Rutherglen, people queued out the door, the pies were absolutely delicious.....expensive but great quality produce. Visited All Saints, Campbells and Warrabilla (Warrabilla is our favourite winery up this way, big ... read more

Well we left Melbourne Saturday morning and after stopping in Wycheproof at a beautiful country shop for lunch, Bakery on Broadway, for a delicious sausage roll and chicken korma pie, onward bound to Mildura arriving around 4.30pm. Its a long drive but we hadn't done it for I reckon around 20 years. We swapped a week of our timeshare at Pt Nepean Country Club for a week at the Sunraysia Resort, a great resort and they had an orientation talk on the Saturday just after we arrived, lots of info of what to do etc, very informative. We have a lovely 2 bedroom unit with everything you need for a weeks stay. Saturday night had a lovely meal at the Workers Club. Sunday headed out to Red Cliffs to the Sunday market and came back with ... read more

Asia » Mongolia » Khovsgol July 8th 2018

Well were up bright and early Saturday morning to leave the Orkhon Valley, loads of heavy rain yesterday afternoon and overnight, wondering how we will go getting out of here through three streams/rivers.........first two were fine but third was a no go.....so Chuka went winding all over the place and took a different route to get us out of there. Over bumpy tracks, rocky outcrops about 20klms into the trip we hit another snag.....a very swollen river.....it did have a bridge over it downstream a bit.....but no go for bridge as it is not stable enough...so after doing the yak water measurments (watched a mob of yak cross first) we powered on through the river....boy are we thankful for big powerful 4WDs....and the experience and knowledge of our drivers. John was following the route on his ... read more

Asia » Mongolia » Gobi Desert July 3rd 2018

Sunday on the road again today a big day of driving 490klm down to the Gobi Desert. This country is just amazing, really is a last frontier, we drove through such a changing landscape….rolling plains, with cattle, camels, sheep, goats by the thousands….then into desert…..dusty, sandy, gibbery plains….stopped off in a little town for lunch and it was lovely, still cannot believe what they produce in the back blocks of Mongolia. Then onto the Tsagaan Suvarga…the most amazing rock formation protruding out of the ground in the middle of the desert…..over thousands of years the wind has created this amazing structure. Then onto our Ger Camp Tsagaan Survarga….very, very basic….our own ger tents but shower blocks about 50 metres away with three toilets and two showers….but we managed and had dinner altogether in the restaurant with ... read more

9.10pm flight from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar on Miat Airways.....bit sceptical but great airline.....served us a nice plain roll with a few filling ingredients.....suited us down to the ground after all the asian food over the last few days. Flight time was less than thought got into UB around 11pm....two drivers and guide (Chucka, Tovuu and Tseegi) there to meet us and transport us to the Kempinski Hotel.....a beautiful hotel....two nights here and our last night here on way back from safari. Chucka is our driver and ours is a big V8 Land Cruiser....glad we paid extra for these cars as the other option was a Russian van which would have taken us all....but we all laughed as we headed to the hotel and saw one....NO SPRINGS....and we have hundreds of klms through the Gobi Desert etc ... read more
