Home and Away's Guestbook

What a wonderful beginning :)
I've been reading so many of your great blogs Bob, but I have neglected to comment. So, now I will make amends. Love the pictures. Especially the one of the jeep stuck up in the mountains. Colour film must have been quite difficult to obtain back in 1949.

Loved this blog.
Your trip was rather aggressive but you used every minute wisely. We ate at Spinnaker's recently. It was ok, but we prefer Horizon's which is nearby. Loved the old photos. Many things look the same. We've never been to Solvang...we will have to add that to our list.

Itineraries and Restaurants
This blog used to be named insane itineraries because I would do this kind of trip. I will have to try Horizons when I make it to Marin County again. Glad you liked my blog. I will complete all my blogs from 1949 to present on New Years Eve so keep your eyes open for it!

Homesick and Not
Well, the truth is that I rarely get homesick around glaciers, volcanoes and things that are so different, and thus exciting. It really just hits when I see photos of home, hear Christmas carols (a definite tear jerker), or am at the Pacific, knowing it laps on my shore too. Tonight for Noche Buena (Chrismas Eve), I'll join a friend and her family--South Americans are so welcoming. Merry Christmas to you and your traveling family.

I've subscribed
I will be reading your blogs. Unfortunately, I can't take three years to visit South America like you, so I will have to travel vicariously. That's interesting the you are an ESL teacher. On December 30 I send my son to Bangkok to take the CELTA course, and then he will teach English in Thailand, with the option of many other countries if he doesn't get into law school in the fall.

homesick
First, I think it's fab that you two are compiling a record of your journey--what a great gift for your kids. Secondly, I'm from Santa Barbara and all of these places are/were part of my life; reading about this great road trip with your fine photos made me extremely homesick. I don't suppose it being Christmas helps either. I'm traveling for several years in South America which I love--it's just that little hits of home make me a bit nostalgic. Thanks for doing justice to my neck of the woods.

Homesick
Dear Tara, We wish you a Merry Christmas although you are far from home and in a strange land that celebrates Christmas differently. However, you are blessed with this opportunity to travel so make the best of it. Try to find some lonely souls with whom to celebrate. We hope to visit South America in 2014. Are you blogging your trip? We would love to follow you.

Hi Bob and Linda
We are in the San Francisco airport heading to Ohio for the holidays. Certainly enjoyed hearing about your trip to Vegas and the Canyons. Glad the animals were safe at home with Will. Happy Holidays

Merry Christmas
Have a great time in Ohio. However, we still expect you to drive there in the summer and stop by here on the way there or back!

Thanks a lot for this great entry and Merry Christmas!
We plan to do most of the big parks out of Las Vegas in just over a year. Plan is to have New Year Eve in Las Vegas and than hit the road. I was really wondering if we need to be worry of the snow to drive around and between the parks. Our plan is to finish by few days skiing around Salt Lake City. Do you think we should expect snow every year around early January? We will for sure take a little longer than you to drive around. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all your family from our little family. No snow for us this year as we are in Fiji.

And a Happy New Year
I forgot to add that my son Will will be arriving in Bangkok on January 2 to learn to teach English as a second language, and then teach until at least June. I like Bangkok but loved living in Chiang Mai more. Anyhway, have both a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas
Certainly no snow in Fiji. We plan to visit Fiji next October on our cruise from Honolulu to Sydney, Australia. So we are very interested in reading about your time there. As for snow conditions between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, you shouldn't have any problems unless there is a snow storm at the time you choose to drive, which can happen as you get into Utah. The state highway department clears the roads, especially interstate highways, very quickly during and after a snow storm. On our trip the only road that were still icy and slippery was I-70 between Vail and Grand Junction in Colorado, but if you are going to the ski resorts near Salt lake City, you shouldn't have a problem.

Favorite blogs/bloggers
Mel, thanks for the invitation to comment. I have a ton of input for my favorite bloggers who I have been following this year. I never learned how to create the links when I enter their names. Can you help? Thanks!
16th December 2011

Hi
Hi, I responded to your post on my blog as best I could, so your welcome to take a look. Hope it helps!

Visa
Thanks for your response. My son tells me that his language school will help him get the immigrant non-B visa. Was there a reason why yours didn't or is he expecting too much from his school? Anyway, my son will not be blogging, so I will have to read your blogs to have some sense of what life could be like for him. I have enjoyed reading about your experiences. I also follow another English language teacher...TBRich.

I collected so many interesting things from your site especially its discussion. From the tons of comments on your posts, I guess I am not the only one having all the enjoyment here. Keep up the good work. voyance par telephone

Featured blog
Congratulations on your first Featured Blog on the Front Page! :)

Thanks, Mel.
Now I will have to be more careful about how I write, now that I have a larger audience! I wish I could provide more color, but just trying to remember what happened on trips that happened decades ago, I often just remember the basics and maybe a couple interesting events. Anyway, thanks for putting me on the front page!

Fort Henry
Some good shots of Fort Henry at Kingston Bob. I suppose NATO were impressed with Canada's readiness.

Fort Henry
NATO was very impressed with Canadian fortification technology, but felt that several European patents had been infringed.
