Bob the jet pilot!
As a young boy, that must have been a highlight of your youth, sitting in that jet. How wonderful to have seen as much as you have and to have lived in so many different places. Such interesting reading - I am reading in installments!
7th September 2012

It's hard to pinpoint one highlight...
but sitting in the cockpit of that jet that just brought the high level team from Washington to make arrangements to station U.S. troops in Thailand and Vietnam was definitely a highlight not just because I was in a jet, but because I was witness to the start of the Vietnam War. I have been witness throughout my life to so many historical events, including the end of the Cold War when I was at NATO. Thanks for reading.

A lifetime of memories!
I am working my way slowly through all your blogs and loving it! So interesting and a lot of time and effort invested in putting it into blogs. Well done!

Thanks for reading my blogs!
A lot of history...please comment when you find something to comment about.

I'm so glad to see your blogs on Colorado. It is such a beautiful place (minus the wild fire) reminded me of BC actually. You have inspired me to return!

hope things have gotten under control
Just saw your blog as we now have wi-fi on the boat - sorry to hear about the fires - hope they have gotten under control - I'll have to now go to get the news as we have been out of contact. By the way - luckily we saw very little trash on our whole Atlantic crossing - only a couple of plastic bottles in 19 1/2 days and 2,550 miles which we were really happy about.
11th July 2012

Now that the fire is out...
we have heavy rains and mud/ash slides which close the road until the highway department can clear a path through. Thus far it hasn't affected us. That's great that you didn't see much trash...or is it called flotsam and jetsam (sp?). That reminds me; I saw a funny highway sign in China which said something along the lines of "Do not throw flotsam from the car."

Penang and the Cameron Highlands
Dear Linda and Bob, I stumbled into your blog, whilst doing a search on the Eastern Hotel at Tanah Rata in the Cameron Highlands. We ( me and my wife Chwee) live in Sunny Singapore , but we have a condo apartment in Penang overlooking the sea (near Batu ferringgi). We use this as a holiday home to get away from the mad rush of city living. Last month whilst in Penang we decided to drive to the Cameron Highlands with our parents. I have not been there for about 20 years and was told that the new highway up from Ipoh to Brinchang in the highlands was alot better with less twistings and bends. About 3.5 hours drive we arrived at Brinchang by about 8 pm. It was nice and cool and after dinner I continued downhill on to Tanah Rata, and checked into the Hill View Hotel by nightfall. As a boy in the sixties I remember vividly the Eastern Hotel in Tanah Rata. It had a fireplace and in the December months when it was colder the fireplace was always lit. ( I did not know then that it was your old Dalat School.) We used to walk to Parit Falls- about 15 minutes away behind the hotel . We were young then and really enjoyed the highlands. Meals were usually at Wah Nam Restaurant which is along the shops in the main street. It was run by a wonderful hainanese cook at the time and his meals were super--Pork Chop, Beef with green Peppers. The Hainanese were great cooks. The morning came and I drove out to look for the old Eastern Hotel. The old town of Tanah Rata has not changed much except for a new building and Bus depot opposite the street where the shops on the main street are situated. It is also alot more busy now. The old Wah Nam Restaurant is still there but the name has changed to Shin Nam. Apparently the owner has passed on and he sold the shop. As I drove past looking for the Eastern Hotel I found it had been demolished and replaced with the Century Pines Resort. It in no way ressembled the old place. Gone was the Scottish house of the old Eastern Hotel--and a touch of sadness crept over me. I went back to the Shin Nam Restaurant looking for a meal but it looked crummy . The new owners -obviously from China ( Chinese nationals now seem to be everywere) did not up keep the place and the menu was vastly different. In the end I settled for a curry meal next door at an Indian Restaurant. Later in the day we drove to check out the Robinson Falls and the Hydroelectric Dam. It appeared that this too had deteriorated as there was alot of debri---plastic bags and cans brought down by the water from higher up (probably from Brinchang which is now even more densely populated than Tanah Rata.) Thank you for your very detailed pictures of the old Eastern Hotel. It brings back fond memories. Maurice Chew

Eastern Hotel
Thank you for sharing your memories of you childhood visits to Tanah Rata and the Eastern Hotel. I hoped you enjoyed my blogs about my time there. I just returned from a Dalat School class reunion where we shared our experiences there and got an update on what it is like there now; confirming what you just reported! One of my classmates teaches English at Dalat International School which is now near your place in Penang. His name is John Tompkins...you should look him up!

Thanks for Sharing
We arrived safely back in the US and have been following the fires in CO. We lived in San Diego from 2002 (Pete) and 2003(me) until we moved to China in Aug 2009 and lived through MANY fires seasons. We always lived close to the beach so we weren't in fire areas but one year Pete was evacuated from his home that was 3/4 mile from the Pacific Ocean. The fire has come down a canyon after some strong winds blew it towards the coast. Fires are quite scary as they can move very fast depending on the winds. Stay safe and we will be praying for those who are affected.

Wildfires!
Thank you for sharing your own experinces in San Diego with wildfires. We survived this one. They lifted the evacuation notices and reopened US24 yesterday. The fires are still burning and generating a lot of smoke, but the Forest Service has it under control for now. What amazing firefighters! Thanks, too, for your prayers.

COLORADO IN FLAMES
Front page in OZ...Colorado Springs at the mercy of a firestorm...coming from Sydney & our home backing onto National Park...we understand the danger of bushfires...hope you remain safe.
30th June 2012

Thanks for your concern
The fire is pretty much under control so, although the smoke in the air is pretty bad and the pre-evacuation notice is still in force, Linda and I are going to the class reunion in Winter Park today.
27th June 2012

Pre-evacuation Order
We packed the cars. but decided not to go anywhere until we receive the mandatory evacuation order. Woodland Park is mysteriously quiet with most of the businesses closed as people hunker down. Hopefully, people will return to their normal routine tomorrow. As for the storm that blew through, the Springs is experiencing high winds, but thus far not the conflagration that they experienced yesterday.
27th June 2012

Pre-evacuation Order Received.
Although we are only supposed to get prepared for a mandatory evacuation, Linda and Tamara are packing the cars now and want to leave to stay with a friend in Denver. Given the rapid change of events in Colorado Springs last evening, I can understand their concern. But I don't want to evacuate until told to do so. Not sure what we are going to do.

Great blog Bob
On my drive home yesterday I was planning to send you an email to check and see how close the fires are to your home. The blog certainly answers that question. I hope they are able to control them soon. Love the train photos.

TALK ABOUT A LONG DRIVE TO A WEDDING
Can't imagine if you had not made it to give away the Bride...the VIPs caught in traffic...now that'd be a story. But you made it...did the Honours with aplomb...and Rosanna looked gorgeous...happy memories...and then you had to drive all the way back!
