Home in Overijse
Thanks for your comment. I noticed that very few have gone back in time. Maybe I just have time to do so since I'm retired. Those one that do I find by looking at the oldest blogs...before Travelblog got started. "Heraclio" covers many years and trips on this blog, but rarely puts the dates when the trips took place, so everything is out of sequence. I sent him a comment on his last blog asking him to edit the dates. I just like to read things chronologically...that's why logically is in the word. Take care, and keep enjoying the Bat area.

I love it.
I think it is great when people go back and blog and trips and times in the past. Loved the photos. We saw the Atomium in 2009.

Date corrections
I will make the corrections immediately. April 29 is my Dad and wife's birthday so that date sticks in my mind as a lot was happening over a couple week period. Someday I would love to hear your stories of how you cut it so close.

Kitty!
Yes, Bangkok was quite pleasant. I enjoy reading your emails. Congratulations on getting your permanent visas!

Typo
Cambodia fell on April 15, 1975 and Saigon fell on April 30, 1975 - not 1974. I realize this is only a typo, but it should be corrected. I left Phnom Penh on April 15, 1975 and Saigon on May 1, 1975. I appreciate your blogs. It brings back many memories. Drew

Kitty!
You two remind us of ourselves... We love Kitty! Lovely home you had. Seems like Bankok was a much quieter experience back then.

Digging old photos out of the many cubby holes and then digitizing them is the difficult part. I look forward to the results of your efforts someday. That's less than $300 for 26 days in Europe. That much buys me about 2 days at the most today.

In the mid 1960's, Thailand was going through major cultural changes with increased exposure to both the good and bad sides of Western culture as the U.S. military presence increased. Starting in Bangkok, the middle class expanded rapidly, with young Thais increasingly going abroad for their college education and bringing home western ideas; especially materialism. Previously mission work was focussed on the lower class farmers and villagers. My Dad saw the need to reach the middle and upper classes who were now more receptive to Christianity. Also the foreign community increased rrapidly, so the church met both needs. The Evangelical Church of Bangkok now has over a thousand members from many countries.

I look forward to reading your blog on Half Moon Bay. However, I preferred Marin County seacoast and from Monterey south to Pismo Beach. Let me know if you agree.

I believe the Germans as with most Europeans start with 6 weeks vacation per year. Then they get maternity leave of several months after each baby is born, and spa treatments as they get older and develop aches and pains...the list is endless! As this blog was 1983, Linda certainly is feeling better!

Great blogging!
Love the cross country trips! You've been to some great places. We were in Half Moon Bay this weekend.

I'm always amazed..
....when I travel how many German's are out on the road. They get a great deal of holiday time. I hope Linda feels good in the next blog.

I love to hear the story about how your father decided to found a church in Thailand.
Can't wait to read more of your blogs!

They have held up very well. I especially like the one of Linda with the guide.

Love the old photos!
You've had some wonderful experiences.

I am thrilled that you are posting blogs from the past.
We hope to do that when we settled down again. Right now all of our old photos are in storage near Pittsburgh. We lived in Pittsburgh from 2008-2010. Very nice blog! Europe on less than $300-- amazing.

Planned construction
EMI produces detailed design drawings and specification which are signed by registered engineers. Uganda does not have government building inspectors who ensure that the plans and specifications are followed. Our clients usually perform the construction management through other parties. EMI was seeking volunteer construction managers to ensure that the work was performed correctly. Hopefully, the EMI East Africa Office in Kampala can partner with Makerere University to bring their graduates in as interns.

Construction site visit to Westminster Seminary near Entebbe

planned constructio
Unlike majority of Africans who carry out constructions without plans, its automatic that the structures had a plan.

disregard of construction managers and standards
did you notice a complete disregard of qualified construction managers and total disregard of construction standards in Uganda. we are always amazed at how much catastrophe has to befall the construction industry and the nation at large before they realise that there is a complete dedicated course at our Makerere University in construction management. the output of this course are not yet fully recgnised and utilised in the construction industry.

Dalat- School
Wonderful pictures. Thanks for the memories. Southern Baptist Missionaries spend our retreats there. While the parents prayed and met the kids played. I love this spot! Thank you, Diane

Getting involved
This was a one-off trip to introduce construction engineers to construction management practices in East Africa, with the hope of having some of the participants volunteer for a year or two overseeing the construction of various projects. However, there are many NGO's in Africa looking for volunteers...Habitat for Humanity is one which does great work. Start by blogging them.

it is so rear for a foreign team to really come to the ground and get involved with such hard works of ugandans, i am entirely taken by these activities, your team is such a great team how can i b part of it....

How you can get involved
Engineering Ministries International has a UK office which you can find by Googling the organization. I could provide the link but I think travelblog automatically strips links. I'm pleased that you are interested. Please let me know how it turns out.
