0 locks, 408 in total. I still didn't see the meteor shower - I've lost count of the number of years I've tried. The smallholding opposite last night's mooring had more animals than I thought – pigs, sheep, 2 cows, chickens and 2 llamas/alpacas. The owners live on a couple of narrowboats moored alongside – ideal set-up. I went to the Wolseley Centre this morning, a conservation project run by Staffordshire Wildlife Trust. They have crammed the maximum number of habitats into this place and it was very pleasant to walk around. We waited for a boat to pass us before casting off – big mistake as I don't think they went above tickover speed for over an hour. Apart from anything else, it makes steering that much more difficult but never mind. When we stopped ... read more

2 locks, 408 in total. The wind did die down last night but then it became cloudy which rather messed up any chance of seeing the meteor shower – at the moment it's not looking too hopeful for tonight either unfortunately. With considerable wind assistance we motored up to the junction with the Trent & Mersey, intending to turn right. Of course just as we got there a boat approached from the right, indicating that he wanted to come our way – at least, that was how I interpreted his sign language until I realised that he was actually just turning around whilst we hovered in a wind tunnel. No harm done anyway but he could have delayed his manoeuvre until we were past – we would have done in his position. After a quick walk ... read more

2 locks, 406 in total. We decided to go only a few miles along the Staffs & Worcs before turning around and mooring at Tixall Wide again tonight. For some reason everyone was on the move very early today – first boat passed us at 6 am – and by the time we reached the lock there were 5 boats already waiting. Then we were joined by a couple of day boats full of ladies celebrating a 40th birthday – they had no idea what they were doing but they were doing it very noisily – yes, I'm dissing the 'sisterhood' here! The chap from their boatyard who had to see them through the lock wasn't too happy either. A little road walk from one of the bridges took us to Milford Common, part of Cannock ... read more

3 locks, 404 in total. It was quite slow going this morning so just as well we weren't in a hurry. Quite long stretches of the off-side of the canal were either private moorings alongside farmland or small boatyards and wharves – either way, we had to drop our speed to tickover as we passed the moored boats but I still enjoy looking at them all. One chap seemed to have bought about an acre of land for his mooring – he had his own tractor for grass cutting and an open-sided summerhouse for alfresco dining – all very appealing. We passed the village of Weston which has a variety of housing, old/new/converted, and all of it was good. The farm shop at Great Haywood is superb – open 7 days a week and it must ... read more

2 locks, 401 in total. Visitors for a couple of hours this morning, hot-foot from their Orkney holiday as they returned to Dover – it was lovely to see Sarah, George and Sarah (and Mitch) and I enjoyed our little catch-up. Otherwise it was a very quiet day. We left Stone after taking on water and were almost immediately in wide open countryside for the rest of the day. The stiff following breeze made life a little less predictable but was not a problem. There are still plenty of boats on the move; it is peak time now of course and we're on the Four Counties Ring, a popular circuit for hirers. We met up with a boat we'd met previously at Stoke - they were returning to their marina, on our route this afternoon. We're ... read more

0 locks, 399 in total. We're stayed in Stone today – we have until next Friday to reach the outskirts of Tamworth for a family get-together and this is a good mooring with decent shops and open spaces and swimming for Hattie. The only drawback has been the live music sessions at the local pub every Wednesday evening – not my style of music and it was very loud. Hoping that we're safe from now on! And the lights did come on across the canal last night – not quite Blackpool standard but cheerful as the temperature dropped. John had a haircut at one of the 8 barbers in this town centre. The Council have sensibly relegated the takeaways to one small section on the outskirts of the shopping area but have apparently sanctioned a doubling ... read more

7 locks, 399 in total. I had a hot water bottle last night – it was very cold for August but the sun today has made up for it. Two groups of locks today – 4 at Meaford and we did only 3 of the ones at Stone. There was a lot of traffic both ways which meant waiting for our turn at the start but then whizzing through the locks on a one-out/one-in system which halved the work. Luckily we arrived at Stone by lunchtime as there are only about 8 visitor moorings and this is a popular place for stocking up on everything. There are also 2 boatyards, one of which has a chandlery with stock that caters for most contingencies. We hadn't been moored long when a boater travelling faster than he should ... read more

6 locks, 392 in total. Having been on less popular canals for a couple of weeks, we really enjoyed the interaction with other boaters at the locks today; we swapped stories of the Kennet & Avon with a boater who'd left there a few years ago, which reminded me that I hadn't mentioned that we've met 2 other boats and boaters from the K & A that we've known a few years – About Time at Marple and Gongoozler at Cheddleston, so we're all a long way from home this year. We left Stoke behind us comparatively quickly as we were never near the centre of the city. There were a few grotty sections but then a more rural setting. We're moored just before Barlaston, where the canal goes through the Wedgwood estate. They moved much ... read more

3 locks, 386 in total. We headed back in the rain to Etruria, junction of the Caldon and Trent & Mersey, stopping once to visit the Emma Bridgewater pottery, which either didn't have the full range or else had stopped making some items, although there were mugs galore. The canal was very winding and the wind gusting from many directions - not ideal conditions. We were both concentrating so hard at one point, watching the narrow bridge on a sharp bend when suddenly we saw the staircase lock ahead of us - we'd already passed the lock moorings by that time so John had to hold the boat by the lock gates whilst the lock slowly filled - oops. I wanted to visit the Etruria Industrial Museum on its large, well landscaped site but it seems ... read more

6 locks, 383 in total. Not much to mention today (ok – I can hear the collective sigh of relief). We decided to stick to moorings that we knew were good as we returned towards Stoke which meant a short day today. The fates conspired against us a little with many boats coming in the opposite direction, often involving manoeuvres in tight places. Also our entry to the last of the Stockton Brook locks was blocked by a huge section of reed bed, upside down in the canal. I've no idea how others had got past but it had now drifted so that navigation was impossible. For the good of all, it had to go. Moving it provided me with enough of a workout to last a month, after walking across a 6” wide length of ... read more
