2 locks, 415 in total. Motored past the Boat Rally again but light was no better this morning than last night for photos although it was considerably warmer. We moored at Polesworth to visit the village and the Abbey Church, which was a wooden structure in the 9th century. After the Norman Conquest it was rebuilt in stone and it was demolished in 1539, ending 700 years of Benedictine worship, and replaced later with an Elizabethan manor house, cloister building and church. All that remains now is the gatehouse, part of the cloister wall and the Abbey Church, dedicated to St Editha – she had lived in the Abbey after her near miss with the Danish king. The church is fairly small but there is an immense feeling of calm as you enter it, aided by ... read more

It was great working the locks again, even just the two, before mooring at Amington on the eastern edge of Tamworth to meet up with Toni and Stewart. We had only just found out about a boat rally/festival being held this Bank Holiday weekend at Alvecote marina, a short walk forward from our mooring; we were all keen to see what it was like so headed off for a look, wondering about our chances of a meal at the Samuel Barlow pub despite no booking. As well as the usual moorers there were about 40 old narrowboats in and around the marina; they were or had been freight boats run by different companies, the most famous ... read more

0 locks, 411 in total. We had a flying visit from Sam this morning – it was lovely to see her and that's twice in one week! Apart from that it was a very quiet day – water, pumpout, etc. We have friends visiting late tomorrow for a couple of days and have earmarked a good section for them to travel so that's why we've hardly moved today. With the dearth of interesting news and photos, it seems like a suitable time to tell you of our sad decision to sell Dunlin after this trip. There are many reasons why this is a sensible thing to do but saying goodbye is still going to hurt. We've had a wonderful time this summer, thanks to friends and family covering for us at home and we are so ... read more

0 locks, 411 in total. Boat crew all present and correct once more so I was able to bus into Lichfield without fear of returning to a fried dog. Once in Tamworth it is just 5 miles to Lichfield yet it takes 35 minutes on the bus; the route is rather like a 'join up the dots' puzzle. One loop took me through Whittington Barracks, home of the Staffordshire and Mercian Regiments I learnt, and presumably the soldiers who fire guns in Hopwas Woods. We drove past the regimental museum with tanks outside, past soldiers on a teamwork exercise (lots of planks and balancing), the rifle range and married quarters area with its numerous speed humps. Elsewhere on the journey was a vast free-range piggery – more than 100 acres of happy piggies. I liked the ... read more

0 locks, 411 in total. We had plenty of cloud for much of the day which gave me a chance to explore a little. I gave Hattie a good walk and swim first thing, fed her and then headed into Tamworth. There's a new shopping centre which I didn't visit – seen one, seen all of them – but the pedestrianised areas had a large range of individual shops as well as a few High Street staples that presumably didn't want to move to the new area. I didn't go into the castle as there seemed to be several large tourist groups swarming over the place. It was King Offa of Mercia's stronghold and palace and was also the stronghold of Ethelfleda, daughter of Alfred the Great. The Danes completely devastated Tamworth twice in two of ... read more

0 locks, 411 in total. Another warm and mainly sunny day although the boat was cold very first thing before the sun moved round. I've been waiting for more than the odd cloud in the sky as I want to bus into Tamworth or Lichfield but I can't risk leaving Hattie in the boat in this weather – it would be like leaving her in a sunny car. So we have walked the towpaths both ways from the junction and Hattie has been swimming twice. This morning I went along the Coventry Canal and then headed off down a path towards a nature reserve. There was one large lake and several smaller pools, one of which was exactly to her taste and she went straight in without needing to be enticed with a retrieve item – ... read more

0 locks, 411 in total. I caught the bus into Tamworth to meet an ex-colleague who was visiting for a few hours. A request to be set down at the station resulted in the bus driving past it and eventually setting me down half a mile away. As the station is on a vast one-way roundabout I couldn't find where the return stop was so we went back to the boat by taxi instead as Sam is unable to walk very far. As I was moored at The Tame Otter, we went there for lunch and left immediately after looking at the menu – just a bit too fancy for us. The Red Lion was much friendlier. After lunch we pootled past the Hopwas back gardens which ran right down to the towpath and an hour ... read more

0 lock , 411 in total. Blog for 16th -18thAugust. We pottered along to Hopwas Friday morning, giving the leisure batteries as much charge as possible as they had to maintain the fridge for the two days we were away – even a 12v fridge is a tremendous power drain, particularly when the boat gets hot. We kept our heads down through Hopwas Woods as this is used as a military firing range. Hopwas is built on the side of a hill and has 2 pubs, a church and a village green; it is another pleasant group of houses, but possibly with less history than Whittington. The canal loops around Tamworth and Hopwas is on the western side – we felt that this was a safer mooring for the weekend than the south side. Packing for ... read more

0 locks, 411 in total. A little background to the Coventry Canal as there's not much else of interest today. The plan was for the canal to run from Coventry to Fradley Junction, where it would join up with the Trent & Mersey. Work started at the Coventry end, as far as a colliery which would pay tolls to the canal board and reduce the cost of coal for Coventry inhabitants. Then the money for finishing the canal ran out. So the T & M started work on a southwards link from Fradley to Whittington and the section from Whittington to Fazeley Junction was undertaken by the Birmingham and Fazeley company, extending their existing canal northwards from Fazeley Junction; the planned Coventry Canal was effectively split into three ownerships. Eventually the top section was bought back ... read more

3 locks, 411 in total. We had a beautiful run into Fradley Junction this morning – a mild breeze as we pottered along the the sun-dappled canal. There was one lock on the way, then 2 more just before the junction where we turned right onto the Coventry Canal, with the T & M continuing straight on towards Nottingham. The locks at Fradley Junction are some of the busiest on the canal network reputedly although we only had a few boats queuing in front of us. There are plenty of moorings here and it can be difficult deciding where to wait in line for the lock without risking losing your turn; our standard method is kicking me off the boat before the queue to recce the situation. There was nothing here before the canals and the ... read more
