6 locks, 377 in total. A there-and-back day today, motoring to Cheddleton, turning round and motoring back to last night's mooring. I hope we don't have a repeat of last night's extremely heavy rain though – I was mopping up a flow of water underneath the stern door at 2 am. We had a lucky escape yesterday as one boat moored next to a wasp nest - quiet overnight but aggressive this morning. The Caldon Canal really is very pretty once you're away from Stoke and its environs – not the rugged scenery of the Peak Forest but undulating pastures, horses and cattle grazing, deciduous trees giving some areas a park-like feel. The canal is not very straight and there are numerous chicanes which I assume used to be bridge sites but there seemed to be ... read more

5 locks, 371 in total. Another day when we seemed to miss the rain, not that I'm complaining. We motored the last couple of miles to Stockton Brook, through 2 drawbridges, and were just in time to meet Barbara and Ellie, who came bearing gifts in the shape of homemade honey cakes – yummy and many thanks, both for the cakes and for coming to visit. The locks were quite difficult so Barbara and Ellie had a fairly hard introduction to canal life. Once through the 5 locks we walked back to the village for a pub lunch, only to find that the one remaining pub did not serve food - *sigh* - so we cobbled together some lunch on board and then motored a little further to absorb the pastoral setting of this part of ... read more

4 locks, 366 in total. We woke up to grey skies and the prospect of rain so decided to walk round Westport Lake before setting off. It was formed in the 19th century I believe when old coal workings subsided and has been updated more recently with a bias towards nature; the all-round path is ideal for prams, joggers, toddlers on bikes, etc. There is a visitor centre showing all the wild fowl that use the lake. We approached the old industrial area of Stoke-on Trent on the T & M canal; the canal was very wide here, almost certainly because of the amount of traffic there would have been in the Potteries heyday. All goods in and out would have been transported by boat. So many of the old potteries have gone, buildings either lying ... read more

1 lock, 362 in total. Rain, more rain, and heavy rain. Did we want to climb Mow Cop in this? – not really. Was the view gong to be any good when we got there? – unlikely. We waited for 45 minutes and decided to abandon the plan, a decision which made more and more sense as the wet day progressed. We motored the last stretch of the Macclesfield to a lock with a 1 foot drop – this was the original end of the Macc – the Trent & Mersey built and controlled the link section onto the Trent & Mersey proper. To accommodate the difference in levels between the two canals without digging more locks and cuttings, the last part of the Macc crosses the T & M by aqueduct and then loops round ... read more

12 locks, 361 in total. We had a lovely run down the Bosley Flight – sunshine, great views and pleasant boaters, including a couple that we'd been up the Hatton Flight with a few weeks ago now. We decided to moor at the bottom as it was so nice and have some lunch. With hindsight we might have missed the couple of stormy showers this afternoon had we continued without a break. This afternoon we experienced a major incident, blocking the canal and 3 other boats for about 30 minutes. As we approached a bridge, where the canal was still wide but would shortly narrow to boat width, there was a large chunk of reeds floating in the middle, with no room either side to squeeze through with impunity. The reed clump was too big to ... read more

0 locks, 349 in total. The Macclesfield is a beautifully scenic canal. Thomas Telford designed it to be as fast a route as possible and an alternative way to Manchester, using extensive cut and fill techniques. Much of the canal is built on embankments which have been landscaped so well that they look a natural part of the surrounding area in most places. There are some wooded cuttings too and all the locks have been grouped together at Bosley. We've spent much of the day looking down on houses, trees and farm animals and gazing into the distance at some wonderful scenery but, churlish as this may sound, the water level is generally quite low, even after the rain of the last 2 days, and progress has been long and slow even for a narrowboat – ... read more

0 locks, 349 in total. Well didn't it rain last night? The canal level rose about 8” - many of the moored boats we passed were lying at an angle because their mooring lines were now too tight. We set off when the overnight rain stopped, fully expecting to get very wet quite soon but the sun came out, we took off layers of clothing and we had the treat of very clear views after all the rain. First stop was a swing bridge – my turn to do the honours but I couldn't shift it at all. I double-checked that the safety lock was undone and then saw the problem – the rain had washed loads of silt and larger stones down the footpath, into the crack between bridge and the steel piece on shore ... read more

0 locks, 349 in total – we did have 2 swing bridges and 2 lift bridges today thoufh – it's not allplain sailing! A day of sunshine and scenery for the most part and two missed photo opportunities. There was a family of 8 very small ducklings who decided that chasing our boat was fun – they almost ran across the water in little bursts of energy and it was very funny. It stopped abruptly when about 30 Canada Geese decided to take off in our direction, very shortly after we had passed them by – quite unnerving seeing all these fat stomachs and large feet coming straight towards you at eye level before dropping down immediately behind us! There was some industry at New Mills and also the Matlow's factory – Swizzles? Love Hearts? Refresher ... read more

16 locks, 349 in total. A lovely morning, ascending the 16 Marple locks. These are spread out over a mile, lifting the canal 214', which makes each lock very deep at 13'. I believe we are now on the second-highest stretch of canal – from Marple Junction at the summit pound we can continue on the Peak Forest to Whaley Bridge or turn south onto the Macclesfield Canal and either way there are no locks for miles. Water levels are a continual problem – either too little or, when it rains, too much. On the way up the flight today we met 3 waterway volunteers and one engineer as one of the lock pounds had drained to a trickle shortly before we arrived. It was all sorted in time for us though, I'm pleased to report. ... read more
