Had a fabulous New Years Eve (from what I can remember) visiting 3 wineries in the Nelson region - Neudorf, Kahurangi and Moutere Hills ( for all you wine buffs) and enjoyed tasting 21 wines! Excellent. Then headed to Punakaiki to see the famous pancake rocks. Unfortunately we had almost 3 days of rain (stop laughing) and so had to cancel our heli hike on Franz Josef. We did however go on the half day Glacier hike which ran in the rain, hail and thunder storm! It was great fun trying not to slip off the ice steps and trying to remember to stamp our feet to make sure the crampons took hold. I think even Dad enjoyed it once he had warmed up and had a nice pint inside him. Luckily the sun came back ... read more

Happy New Year from sunny New Zealand! Hope you all have a great 2006 with lots of fun and adventures! Well I left Australia behind and have just spent 10 days in the north island of New Zealand. I met up with my Dad in Auckland and it is nice to have some company for the next month. Auckland was a bit wet but since then the weather has been glorious! Enjoyed a nice meal in the revolving restaurant of the sky tower in Auckland, went on a hole in the rock cruise in the Bay of Islands and spent Christmas in Rotorua. Christmas Day was lovely we went on a cable car, did a luge ride, patted baby lion cubs at Paradise Valley and went to a Polynisian thermal Spa! Boxing Day we went out ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Mornington Peninsula December 19th 2005

Said goodbye to Sydney and made a quick 24 hour stop in Canberra. Went on an excellent tour of the New parliament and the War memorial. Both highly recommended! Then headed on to Melbourne where I spent 5 nights with my friend Wendy and her parents on the Mornington Peninsula. Wendy proved to be an excellent tour guide and I managed a trip on the great ocean road, a pictoresque ferry crossing, a Brit Art exhibition in Melbourne, shopping and the highlight a drive to Ramsay Street. No sign of Lou Carpenter or Harold Bishop but it was great to see where Neighbours is filmed after 20 years of watching the show. Poor Wendy has never seen it so didn't have a clue whose house was which! Next stop New Zealand!... read more

From Fraser Island I spent one night in Surfers Paradise (it was all I could stand), two nights in Byron Bay which I loved and then got the overnight Greyhound to Sydney. My first and only venture into overnight travel. It was the oldest bus they could find with a driver who was a miserable so and so, no movie, no music and the wierdest, maddest woman I have come across sat next to me. Not much fun for a 13 hour journey! Anyway, the last 7 days in Sydney have been amazing. It has been great to revisit some of the places I went to 5 years ago when I came for the Olympics and I fell in love with the city all over again. This time I saw a play at the Opera House, ... read more

Since my last entry I have spent three awesome days on Fraser Island - the worlds largest sand island. I decided on a guided rather than self-drive tour staying in the Kingfisher Bay resort rather than camping. After two minutes on the island it prooved to be a very wise choice with torrential rain and skidding and sliding all over the sand. However, after a wet walk through the rain forest to Lake MacKenzie it soon brightened up. I guess it can't be sunny all the time. We crammed lots into the 3 days but the highlight for me was swimming in the crystal clear waters of Lake Birrabeam and seeing dolphins and sea turtles swimming off the coast of the Indian Rocks. Sadly no Dingo's were spotted but never mind. I still remember Dinky from ... read more

I have just returned from a 3 day 2 night sailing trip around the Whitsundays! It is a hard life I am leading at the moment. The trip involved sunbathing on deck, snorkelling, lying on a beach, swimming in the sea and oh more sunbathing! Fantastic! Whithaven beach was amazing. Very clear, bright aqua sea with golden sand. A great place to try out my new bikini which is a must have fashion item around here and justifies the rather hefty price tag. I didn't feel sea sick at all and loved sleeping out on deck under the stars listening to the sound of the ocean. Now heading down towards Hervey Bay and am booked on a 3 day 2 night tour of Fraser Island. I am now travelling with Yvonne from Germany (who I met ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Mission Beach November 13th 2005

Well, I did it. This morning at 11.30am I was collected from my hostel taken to an air strip, given 5 minutes training, flown to 14 000ft and then thrown out of an aeroplane! I have to say that for some reason I wasn't scared at all and loved every minute of it! It was such an amazing experience and I can't wait to go again. My instructor - Bruce (No I am not making it up he really was called Bruce) was really fun and has done an excellent DVD so you can all see for yourselves when I get back exactly what I went through. There was a 60 second freefall and then it took about 5 or 6 minutes to land on the beach. Amazing, breataking scenery over the reef and great views ... read more

Had a good couple of days in Darwin and enjoyed the nightlife. Apparently I was in the same bar as the actor Hugh Jackman (not exactly sure who that is!). Oh well. Then headed to Cairns where I spent the last five nights. Enjoyed a mad daytrip by Uncle Brian's tour company where we were all singing and dancing with a toy Elmo?! Did get to see some sights as well including Babinda boulders, Josephine Falls and Milla Milla Falls where they filmed the Timotei advert from a few years ago. It was great fun rock sliding until one girl knocked her front teeth out. Ouch! Also spent a day trip in the Daintree rainforest, saw some baby crocodiles on the river and went to Cape Tribulation. However, the highlight for me was going out on ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Darwin November 5th 2005

Well, since my last blog I have now travelled through central Australia and made it up to the capital of the Northern Territory Darwin! I have had a fantastic trip and seen some more great sights. The highlights were swimming in the thermal pools at Mataranka surrounded by hundreds of fruit bats, eating green ants and kangaroo tail while learning how to throw spears on an aboriginal experience day, a yellow river billabong cruise only topped by a jumping crocodile cruise and a hike in Kakadu National Park. Now arrived in Darwin for some much needed air conditioning after temperatures reaching 45 degrees! Not nice when you are camping. Had a wild night in Darwin last night and now have a few days to chill before I head to Cairns!... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Alice Springs October 27th 2005

Hello! I have now made it to Alice Springs in Central Australia. I spent three nights at the Ayres Rock resort and enjoyed a magnificent sunset with champagne and a 3 hour hike around the base of Uluru (Ayres Rock). It was amazing to see how the rock changes in places and the different colours. Didn't do the climb as they close it when it is above 36 degrees! Vicky you were right about the flies and yes I wish I had bought a fly net! I am now on an organised tour up to Darwin with Lets Trek Australia and after Uluru headed to Kings Canyon where it was 43 degrees in the shade at 6.30pm! This is a little bit like I imagine the Grand Canyon to be like. It was excellent to walk ... read more
