Just completed the first week of specialised training. Excellent fun. Can't believe this is work! I think it will be really different when the kids arrive so am making the most of it now. Learnt how to canoe. It was such good fun until we played chase the sponge. Jason and I managed to capsize the canoe. It was pretty scarey at the time as I got stuck under the boat but once I stopped panicking I relaxed and swam out from underneath. I pretended that we were meant to capsize so we could practise a rescue! We also went in a Nipi which was excellent fun. A bit like a sauna but outdoors with hot coals. Lovely as the weather has been pretty wet and cold. Also been climbing and did archery! Had a free ... read more

Just returned from a one night camping trip around the Sargent Center trails. Weather has now changed from hot and humid to wet and cold. Had an excellent camping trip even in the rain. I made a camp fire and helped to cook dinner, pitch the tents, tie a bear bag, sing songs and play games. We even made apple pancakes with maple syrup for breakfast - excellent! Tommorow I am going canoeing and then learning how to teach archery! Saturday I have to go on Raptors Watch which is where you climb a tower and then jump off! Free time on Sunday to do washing and hopefully get off the camp for a day to explore. Then more training next week when the rest of the staff arrive. Playing lots of games including Eygptian Ratscrew ... read more

Arrived safe and sound yesterday. Took about 3 hours to get to camp. There are 5 other "internationals" as they call us! Everyone is very friendly and I have two days to relax before I start training on Monday. Went to Peterborough "A good place to live" according to the sign! Not much there but there is a bar which hopefully I will see at some point. Staying in one of the yurts - bit like a big tent but with camp beds. Very hot and humid here and the mosquito's have already taken a liking to me! Off to explore now and try not to get myself lost ........ read more

Well, my bags are packed (almost!) and I'm ready to go (with butterflies in my stomach), leaving on a jet plane at 2.30pm tomorrow! So excited and not sure what to expect. Will the Sargent Adventure Camp turned out to be Brat camp? Will the Director be more Sargent Major than Ronald McDonald? Well, for those of you who are interested I am heading to a tiny place in New Hampshire about 2hours north west of Boston in between two towns - Hancock and Peterborough. The camp is owned by Boston University and is set in about 800 acres of land with 24 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking and all sorts of activities. There is even a small lake called Halfmoon Pond and a small river that runs through the land called the Nubanusit ... read more
