Visited Monument Valley a few days ago. Baking temperatures but enjoyed a hair raising jeep tour with a Navajo Indian - Willie from the Redbottom tribe (only realised the pun a few days ago!). Anyway, we went on this awesome tour and saw some amazing monuments. Willie was a great guide and we were able to get out of the jeep to hike on some of the Mesa's where we saw cool arches and circles. I say hike, it was more like bouldering and I definitely took my life in my own hands a few times. Could have done with a harness and some rope! We also saw some examples of cliff dwellings and some paintings on the walls which date back thousands of years. In the evening we watched the sunset and then camped out ... read more

Well, can't believe it is now day 9 of the trip and we have made it all the way to Texas and have just arrived in Del Rio near the border with Mexico. I had a fun day in New Orleans after the big night of partying and went shopping for a dress for Vegas. I can't let the side down for our Limo ride and everyone else is going to dress up so a good excuse to shop! Yesterday we drove into Texas and got to catch a free ferry across to Galveston where we camped right on the edge of the beach. Pretty cool apart from the sand flies so I am now covered in bites! Enjoyed swimming in the sea though even if it did feel like bath water. I also managed a ... read more

North America July 10th 2007

Well since my last entry I have travelled all the way to New Orleans! I enjoyed the natural history museum, a walking tour of Brooklyn and some window shopping on 5th Avenue, a discussion about Brazillian politics (with 2 Brazilian girls I met at the hostel) before leaving for my tour on 4th July. It turned out that a girl in the bed above me in the hostel was on my trip! What a coincidence! There are 2 Southern Sun trips with 13 people on each plus a tour leader. My trekamerica groups consists of 4 South Koreans, 2 Swedes, 1 Dane, 2 Germans, 2 Scots and one other girl from England! Interesting mix of people! Oh and on the other trip is a guy from my home town - Abingdon who went to the ... read more

Well, it has been a very busy and hectic May but I have been able to escape the land of Sargent Center twice for a few weekends away. Yipeee! My first outing was a white water rafting trip to the Forks, Maine. This was my second time rafting here and it was totally awesome. The only downside was that when we arrived there was still snow on our campsite and the water temperature was 35 degrees. The weather had been so bad that this meant that we were unable to raft the Dead river on Saturday as the road to get there still had 4 feet of snow and was not passable in a normal vehicle. This meant that we rafted the Kennebec river twice. I decided to go in the front of the raft ... read more

I finally earnt a week off work and was joined by my Dad, his wife Andrea and her daughter Jordan. They spent two nights at Sargent Center from which we took a trip to Springfield, MA to see the birthplace of Dr Seuss and to explore his memorial garden. I enjoyed having my picture taken with the Lorax! We then drove 8 hours up to Niagra Falls and were rewarded with great weather and a fantastic view of the falls. It was very quiet so we were able to explore without masses of tourists. I have to say though that this was my third visit and I think that is enough for me! For the rest of the week we went to Vermont and New Hampshire and visited the Ben & Jerry's ice cream factory, the ... read more

I had an amazing time during my whirlwind 8 week tour of England. Only a few hours after I had stepped off the plane in Manchester I was eating a bacon sarnie and went out shopping for an outfit for my Dad's wedding 2 days later. The wedding went very smoothly and everyone seemed to enjoy the day. Despite suffering from jetlag I managed to stay up until the early hours of Sunday enjoying the celebrations although I did have a sore head later on! Next followed a mad 7 hour drive across the country to my friend Nicky's and Brendan's to meet their new little boy James. It was worth the long journey and amazingly I managed to stay on the left handside for nearly all of the 350 miles! Next stop was my family ... read more

Well since my last blog I have been busy settling in to my new role as a School Program Assistant at the Boston University Sargent Center for Outdoor Education. I am enjoying the work and have been able to train as a course leader on some of our high elements - the Northern ropes course and the climb tower. Weekends have been rather hectic with working for the conference program but I have managed a few trips. I recently went and hiked in the White Mountains with my friend Cheryl. It was in the peak of the fall foliage and was a gorgeous day with amazing views as we hiked Mount Welch and Mount Dickey. Still haven't made it to Mount Washington but will definitely do this one in the Spring. I am also getting into ... read more

North America » United States » Colorado » Denver September 10th 2006

Well, I finally managed to get a week off work - yipee! I headed off to Denver, Colorado where I met up with my Dad. We had a wonderful time watching the Colorado Rockies play the San Diego Padres at the Coors Field stadium. Luckily the Rockies won and my Dad enjoyed his first baseball game. We then hired a car and set off on our long drive to see some of the famous sights. We started off with the Garden of the Gods; went on the Manitou Springs-Pikes Peak Cog railway which was 20 degrees Farenheight at the top and snowing!; then to the Great Sand dunes; Mesa Verde National Park where we hiked among the famous cliff dwellings; the hot springs at Ouray; spent an hour in Aspen before getting to Grand Lake and ... read more

Wow! Can't believe my last entry was back in January. Sooo much has happened since then. I settled in well to life in good old live free or die state of New Hampshire at the Sargent Center for Outdoor Education. It is the same place I worked last summer and is on the border of Hancock and Peterborough ("a very good town to live in!). I have been working as a school program instructor from January to June teaching lessons such as wildlife ecology, wetland ecology, geology, astronomy, night walks, ropes courses, pioneering, forestry to name a few! I am now working at Adventure Camp as the Trek and Camp Program Director for the summer. Although I have been working extrememly long hours I have managed a few outings during my stay here. I spent a ... read more

Now back in the good old USA which will be my home for the next 18 months! Before I start work I managed to spend 2 nights in LA and 3 nights in Washington. LA was still pretty warm which was nice and I had a fab day at Universal Studios with 2 girls I met from the hostel. The new Mummy ride was Awesome! The Nation's Capital (as the Americans like to call it) was fabulous. I loved walking past the White House, going up Washington Monument, Capitol Hill, the Smithsonian Institute, watching the dollar being printed, Lincoln Memorial, oh and a walking tour of Georgetown which included a few drinks in a bar. Wow. It was a busy few days and I will definitely be back. I loved Washington. Off to Boston tomorrow and ... read more
