Tuesday, we thought it would be fun to drive a circuitous route around Mt Hood. Starting off downhill we passed by Fred Meyer's Walmartlike grocery plus store. They are so successful here that Wallyworld announced a new competitive campaign to build in this area. We visited Ft Vancouver, an NPS National Historic Site, over the river in Washington, and then navigated our way around the crazy hills and curvy streets of Portland to the Governor Hotel and the noon meeting of the Portland Rotary Club, established in 1910. Pendleton Woolen Mills CEO Morton Bishop III articulated the history, since 1863, and philosophies of his highly successful family owned company. They only weave wool from local farms in their own mills and use in-house staff for most activities; the rest they farm out to local area contractors. ... read more

Washington's and Oregon's rolling hills and well maintained roads aided our completion of the trip to Redmond. The magnificent mountains in Oregon provided some foothills we navigated and also some outstanding scenery for the Good Sam Rally. With over 3000 rigs parked in a variety of lots surrounding the Deschutes County Expo Center buildings we enjoyed a variety of activities including looking at new RVs, browsing through vendors offering “must have” stuff, seminars provided by vendors on new concepts and information, and opportunities for meeting others the Good Sam way. The Good Sam CEO gave very inspirational presentations to Life Members explaining his efforts to make the Club and supportive organizations user friendly. The evening entertainment offerings included Vince Gill's concert delayed by rain and Peter Noone's (Herman's Hermits) electrifying performance ... read more

Sunday in Calgary was relaxing and a chance to meet with close friends who are Calgorians. They hosted us at a private club with a wonderful Sunday buffet. Monday was museum and Rotary Make up day with a band rehearsal in the evening. Tuesday began early with an equipment loading and bus caravan to a local Mall for a Calgary Caravan pancake breakfast and presentation of our show. After loading the buses we arrived at the Saddledome for our next Stampede show presentation and free time until the evening. We repeated our show with a great audience reception after having an opportunity to see the fantastic show bands perform. Then it was “home” for packing and, for us, preparing for an early morning RV departure. We learned that, although we're not a competition band we were ... read more

Stampede Parade. Friday the 8th begins before dawn with dressing in the Rounder uniform and remembering music, mouthpiece, water bottles, uniform fanny pack (in New Zealand it's called a “Bum Bag”), etc. Driving from our RV park to the hotel for a buffet breakfast and school bus transportation to the parade is a breeze with little traffic. After loading the truck with instruments we board the buses and rendezvous with other bands at a local high school. At the appointed hour we caravan, with police escort, through barricaded streets, non stop and direct to our band mobilizing area for the buses to park for the duration. The Visiting Band Committee has arranged a “watering hole” at this spot since the parade begins and ends here in its rectangular pattern and dehydration has been a problem in ... read more

Welcome to Canada. Sunday morning and we depart our temporary home in Great Falls and, after refueling, proceed north. Going through the city on the Sabbath is very pleasant and we stop at Flying J for US priced fuel, as does another rig which hitched up our toweds together at the Fam Camp. As usual we have problems with the Flying J computers in using our fueler advantage card for our discounts. An active duty Army serviceman strikes up a conversation, asking which service we retired from and noted that he's heading to Alaska in his final change of duty station move. From his comments he's one of our nation's fine personnel approaching his 20+ year retirement after 18 years of active duty and another 5 Guard years. While he's moving from North Carolina he noted ... read more

Whitewater Rafting. Gathering at 5:45 AM we sign the necessary waivers and board vans for an hour and a half ride across the plains and into the mountains, crossing the Continental Divide at Rogers Pass. This is an excursion put on by Malmstrom AFB's Outdoor Recreation Dept which provides all the gear and guides. We begin donning our wetsuits, PFDs, helmets, etc and receive a very thorough safety briefing. We're told that the water is 58 degrees (the soakings we receive later feel a lot colder) but that doesn't stop some of the younger folks from taking a volunteer swim. Our first 7 miles is a smooth paddle as we learn how to sit on the side of the inflatable, jamming our feet into the space between the floor and sides as an anchor, and paddle ... read more

Hardin to Great Falls Departing relatively early we refueled and continued our trek north. Today the temp went from a cool overnight to an afternoon in the 90's. The pathway through the grazing lands, past the rock formations poking out of the turf, was wonderfully scenic. On several crests we saw wind farms windmills in their parked modality. In the distance were snow-crested mountains, the creators of the swollen rivers we continued to see. The fields also seemed soggy from recent rains. The open spaces were covered with what I'd call “chokeweed” except for areas obviously cleared for grazing cattle, sheep and horses. Rail transportation is also a very popular way to move product although we couldn't understand why several trains are parked side by side on the main line (union work rules?). Arriving at Malmstom ... read more

Cheyenne to Hardin, MT A beautiful day in the western US. The morning dawned clear and cool and we got underway at around 0830. Light traffic, rolling hills and a memory of a nice group of people at the Flying J while filling up. In fact, you have to thank the Nebraskans for their positive outlook on life. Flying J is going through corporate computer challenges in their merger with Pilot and it makes customer relations a piece of work. We again saw full rivers, creeks and ponds and non moving power generating windmills. Stopping at Hardin, MT in a nice commercial campground we participated in an ice cream social with accompanied conversation about traveling and local activities. We learned that the local Flying J had a problem last week with contaminated fuel and that we ... read more

Greenwood, Neb. To Cheyenne,Mo After a pleasant and quiet night we renewed our travels down I 80 on a cloudy and cooler Sunday. Light traffic and only light mist made for a pleasant travel day. We did note the high water of the South Platte River in all its manifestations and fields, ditches and lakes full of water. Some farms were flooded and the crops didn't look good. I forgot on yesterday's blog to mention that we noted Ken Gray Parkway in Missouri, in honor of we don't know who but maybe named for our Florida friend. In Cheyenne we returned to a military Fam Camp we visited once before at F. E. Warren AFB. One has to be careful navigating the base to avoid a 12'4” train trestle but the campground is quiet and secure. ... read more

Wednesday morning, 22 June, and we pulled out of our Florida driveway on the road to Calgary, Canada. It was hot already in the Sunshine State but with both the coach A/C on (supplied by the generator) and its RV driver's A/C we were comfortable. Traffic was reasonable until we reached Gainsville, naturally, but we pulled in to Ft Rucker, AL's RV park and enjoyed a great evening among the trees. Underway the next day we enjoyed the hills and green landscape of 'Bama and into Tennessee, crossing over the border into Ft Campbell,KY’s RV park. Again the camp hosts were excellent and friendly and steered us to the largest PX in the Army. Of course getting around the base is a challenge for us Navy types but it was great to mingle with the young ... read more
