This weekend was sooo nice. =) It was great getting to spend time with my host-family. Sat. the kids all went to Madrasa. My host mom and I went out to get me a cell phone and so she could grab a couple things for her dad before we went out to her parents place. Her parents live in a part of Mombasa known as Bamburi. It's about a 30 min. matatu ride. It was nice to meet her family. Her mom was soooo cute. She didn't speak any english, but had a great time talking with me. hehe... it was quite interesting. I'll definetely have to go back and visit. When we got back home we just relaxed. The evening was spent playing cards. =) We had a blast! Sun. the kids had Madrasa again, ... read more

Well, I'm back in Mombasa now. I was really sad to leave Lamu. It's a great town. Sun was a long travel day. Our plane leaving Lamu was delayed 2 hours. Also ran into my first experience with corruption at the Lamu airport. Luckily Ali took care of all the stuff for us. The people there didn't want to let us take all our luggage on the plane saying it was too much. So they wanted Ali to pay em around 7,000 shillings (about $100 bucks). Ali called Athman and Athman said not to pay and that we should just send as much luggage back as they didn't want to let on the plane and we'd just bus it out to Mombasa the following day. When Ali got off the phone he told the guy that ... read more

Went Dancing!!!! Sat. was a long but great day. Went and got Henna done on my hands and feet. It took 4 hours, but it looks great. After I got that done I spent the entire day with Bushra. It was wonderful just hanging out with her. She invited me to stay for dinner, so I ended up staying at her place til 10 that night. when I left her 4 year old daughter started crying and said I couldn't leave. I felt so bad. Bushra's house boy walked me back (since it was dark out). Just outside the house I ran into Egan, Lia, Annie, Faith and Aly. They were going to a club just on the outskirts of Lamu. I was exhausted, but told em I jsut had to run in and drop of ... read more

I'm now in Mombasa, but I'm transcribing what I wrote in my journal on that day: I just heard and saw the most amazing thing tonight! Egan, Annie, faith and I were walking back from Petley's (a local bar). When we got to Milimamni (our house) we saw Lia outside the house next door. She was just standing there watching and listening. Inside the house there were a ton of men. the room was packed and the lights were out. The men were singing/ chanting and sort of dancing. Lia said they'd been singing for at least 30-45 min. before we got there. The music was so powerful and beautiful. We found out from one of the ladies that had gathered that a woman inside was sick and all the men from the surrounding homes had ... read more

First I'll explain what a buibui is.... you know the black covers that muslim women wear... that's a buibui. The thing covering the face is a ninja, some wear em and some don't. Now that that's clarified, here's why I wanted to be wearing one yesterday.... I walked to my tutor's house yesterday afternoon. When I got there her house boy informed me that she was at her mom's house on the other side of town. He asked if he should walk me and I said no... I knew the way. As I was walking I ran into a guy I knew and talked to him briefly. Right after that a shop owner (looked like he also might've been a beach boy) came up to me and asked how I was doing and shook my hand. ... read more

I've only got extraordinary things to write about. Swahili class is going great. Learning lots really quickly and am having a blast doing it. This weekend was another amazing one. It was the weekend of our dhow (traditional sailboat) trip. At 6am on Fri morning we all piled into 2 boats and took off for Kiwayuu. It's an island north of here. Unfortunately we didn't get to sail on the way there. The view as we made are way among various islands was once again amazing. It was pretty peaceful (except for the sound of the motor). We stopped breifly on an island for a bathroom break. The beach on the island was white, but the dirt a little ways up it was a deep red/orange. The colors here are so vibrate. We soon climbed back ... read more

Sat. was the greatest day ever. We spent it in paradise. After Swahili lessons and breakfast (7am-9am) We all piled into a dhow and headed to the beach. We went to a beach on Manda island. We had it practiacally all to ourselves. The beach was gorgeous. The sand was sooooo fine. The sky was a crystal blue. The water felt so nice (but unfortunately cause of the intensity of the sun we couldn't stay out long, and those that did got quite burned). We had lunch on the beach. Our cook made a fire as soon as we got there and grilled fish, made coconut rice and then a dish with cabbage and potatoes. It was delicious. After lunch a group of us went for a walk along the water. I've never seen anything so ... read more

Have you ever arrived at a place and just felt it was right? That's what I felt like when we got here. On Mon. we took a plane from Malindi to Lamu (only 25 min.). The airport (which is just a few shade structures) is on the mainland. We then had to strap on our bags and walk down to uor dhow. We had to cross two other boats to get to ours and trust me, it's not easy climing through other boats with a big bag on your back. But anyway... We then headed for the island. Lamu has a population of about 20,000. It's a gorgeous island. The house I'm staying in is beautiful and the view from the roof is amazing. The city is surrounded by a palm tree forest. The houses are ... read more

Can't believe it's been a week.... what a busy week it's been. I'm now in Malindi. It's a city up the coast about 2 hours from Mombasa. We drove up on Fri. It was really neat to get to see some of the countryside along the way. What a difference from the city. There were mud huts along the side of the road. And the further from the city we got the more women we saw carrying loads on their heads and more villages with mud (or manuer walls) with thatched roofs. Just a little before we got to Malindi we stopped in Gede. It's a little town that has a national historical preserve. One of the oldest swahili settlements was there. We got a tour of the ruins by the guy that runs the park. ... read more

Hamjambo, I'm writing cause we have some free time. After our Swahili class we were all partnered up and given a place in the city to find. I was partned up with Lia and we had to find the Ganjoni Health Center. All they told us was to take lots of water (it's scorching out here) and sunscreen with. We had to find people along the road and ask them how to get there. We have til 4 to be back at the office (We started at 11). Lia and I found it with few problems. Most everyone that we stopped to ask was very nice and helpful. We had to walk through some very very poor parts of the city. We were almost there, but wanted to make sure we were on the right road ... read more
