It's been a while since I last wrote an entry. Sorry things have been busy. My parents arrived Mon. May 1st. =) It's soooo good to see them. Before they arrived I was busy with interviews and getting research done. I was also busy planning some of the things we would do. It was a busy week and I was very anxious to finally have them here. Mon. morning I woke up early and went to the airport with Mkuu, my host-mom. It was a great first day with my parents and was wonderful to see them again. We came back to Mkuu's place and had a wonderful Swahili breakfast. Yummy yummy food and lots of it. My plan for the first day was just to walk them around Mombasa a bit. They arrived at 7 ... read more

So yesterday was definetly a busy and adventurous day. The morning I just ran a few errands, one of which was making reservations at a hotel for when my parents come! =) Only 11 more days.. can't wait! A little after 11 I went to the post office and grabbed a Matatu to the ferry. I was going to Shika Adabu (on mainland Mombasa) where Lia was staying to go to a wedding yesterday and today. The matatu ride was only about 10-15 min. Getting on the ferry was really easy, but I felt kind of awkward. I was the only white and got lots and lots of stares. I also heard "Ona, Mzungu!" "look, a white!" quite a bit. Lia met me on the other side and after buying some water we grabbed a Matatu ... read more

What an amazingly fun, interesting and busy weekend it's been. The wedding on Fri. night was good. This ceremony was for the female family and friends of the groom. The dresses women wore were a lot more elaborate than the 1st wedding I went to. They were so sparkly. The women all sat around the dance floot, some in chairs most on the mats on the floor. They played a lot of Swahili music and women got up and danced. Yep, and I joined em. Dancing at a wedding is easy and pretty boring. The women kind of shuffle around in a circle and move their hips. That's it, but they have a great time singing along with the music. A cousin of the groom who had recently been married was there and they sat her ... read more

Yesterday was a fabulous day! We woke up early and headed off to Chumbe Island at 8am. We caught our boat and headed out to the island. It was amazing. Chumbe Island isn't too far off the Island of Zanzibar and is the location of Chumbe National Marine Park. There's a beautiful coral reef off the shores of Chumbe. When we got there we were all astounded again by the beauty here. The ocean had some amazing colors. Nobody lives on the island (there's just a small tourist resort). We had about 2 hours worth of lecture about the island and the conservation effort and the importance of eco-tourism. It was pretty interested, but not what we all wanted to do with a lot of sun and a white beach near by. After the lecture we ... read more

Just got back from Bewjuu (a town on Zanzibar island) this afternoon. We left Stone Town yestereday morning and drove to Jezani Forest. We first had a little info session on the forest and the conservation of it. Then we walked a little bit to an area that usually has Zanzibar Red Backed Colobus Monkeys. There were quite a few of them and they were sooooooo cute! =). There were babies jumping from branch to branch pretty much at eye level. Some monkeys even used Gabi's head as a go between. After that we went for a walk through the forest. It was soooo beautiful! Some of the trail got pretty muddy and it was intertaining to see how everyone's shoes looked like at the end=). The trees were so amazing. Took lots of pictures, so ... read more

I'm in Zanzibar, Tanzania now! We left Mombasa on Mon. at 8 in the morning and had about an 11 hour bus ride to Dar es Salaam. The ride really wasn't that bad and for the most part the roads were pretty good. We had been planing to go clubbing our one night in Dar, but nothing was open Mon. night, so we just ended up sleeping. The following morning we had to just explore the city. It was pretty fun just walking around Dar. The city is so much cleaner than Mombasa. It's definetely a city that if I get the chance I want to come back to and spend some time here. People are very nice. Although one of us did have a bad run in with some guys: Of course the story is ... read more

A little after noon we left the park and headed into Voi. We ater our packed lunches at a gas station/ rest stop. Anne, Ruben (our teachers), our food and other supplies joined us there. We then clombed back into the vans and began our way inot the Taita hills for our week village stay. We got rained on on our way up. It was so peaceful I ended up falling asleep. When I awoke it appeared our vans had been teleported to Costa Rica. The hills/mountains we were climbinb were so green and trees were everywhere. The only ones I recognized were the banana trees. The hillsides were covered in terraced farms that reminded me of Nepal and scattered houses. It didn't take us long to arriave at the site of the clinic we were ... read more

Sun. morning I woke up early said goodbye to my family grabbed my bag and headed off to the office to meet the group. We ended up leaving late 'cause one of the safari vans was late, but nothing here is on time, so it wasn't out of the ordinary. When it came we all climbed in eager to get on the way to Tsavo National Park. The drive up there took several hours. The road for most of the way was paved, but very bad. The vans we were in luckily had good shock absorbers, but it still felt like we were off roading most of the time. The drive was slow and very bumpy. Around noon we finally arrived at the park and had lunch at a resort just outside of the park. It ... read more

We finished our lectures yesterday! =) That was nice. Tomorrow we're leaving for Tsavo national park. I'm soooo excited to see all the animals. Unfortunately though I'm sick. YUCK!!! having a fever (even a slight one) in a place where it's super hot anyway really bites. I'm hoping that I'll be all better by tomorrow, but we'll see. We'll be camping for a night in Tsavo national park and then continue on to Taita. Apparently the roads there are pretty bad. One section of the road should only take 15 min. to pass, but usually takes around 2 hrs. WOW!! I'll tell you if it's true when I get back. This is the last you'll hear from me until I get back to Mombasa at the end of the month. There's no electricity in the villages ... read more

It's rained a good portion of the day today!!! =) It's quite a bit cooler today, which is sooooooo nice. Last night I went to bed early (around 10), but woke up somewhere around 12 cause the power went out (the 3rd time in the past week). I know, when you're asleep a power outage shouldn't make any difference, but it does here in respects to the celing fans. I woke up 'cause I was roasting in the room. It was soooooo hot. I laid there and contemplated going an standing in the dark shower just cause I knew the water would be cool.... it was soooo uncomfortable. Even in the middle of the night it was warm enough to make me sweat buckets. YUCK!!! It took around an hour n' a half before the power ... read more
