Papa and I left Stockum early in the morning. I was very sad to leave Germany, but even more excited for my next journey: LEBANON! Papa and I got to the airport with plenty of time. Check in was fast and easym so we enjoyed a beverages at an aiport cafe for about an hour. With just over an hour to take off, I figured it was about time to head through security. Security only took 10-15 minutes. It took the rest of the hour to get to the plane. I had to walk and walk to get to the gate, passing through a passport checkpoint. At the gate they checked our passports again, checking to be sure that we had never been to Israel. Then I boarded a shuttle bus. After about a 10 minute ... read more

Sunday afternoon, after a short visit to Oma Irmgard's for coffee and cake for Jan's birthday, Mama, Papa, Basti and I headed to Köln (Cologne) to meet up with Marina. We went out to dinner at a nice little Spanish Restaurant, La Bodega. It was pretty neat cause you order a bunch of small dishes instead of just a couple big ones and then everyone shares. It was nice cause we got to try a lot of different things. It was really great to have all 5 of us there. That very rarely happens now. =) Great to have the whole family together. =) After dinner, Basti had to catch a train back to Berlin; Mama and Papa and to head back to Stockum as they had to work the next day and Marina and I ... read more

Today, Franzi and Maike graduated from the Gymnasium in Sundern. The celebrations began this morning with a church service and then "Zeugnis Ausgabe", passing out of the report cards. Kind of like receiving their diplomas. I wasn't at either of these events. In the evening I joined the festivities as the celebrations continued with the Abi-ball. Family and a few friends who were fortunate enough to be able to receive a dinner card joined the graduating class in the Stockum Schützenhalle for an elegant dinner. In many ways the night reminded me of Prom. The ladies were all dressed in long elegant dresses. The hall had be nicely decorated with flowers on the long tables. Franzi and Maike looked beautiful. Luckily, we were all able to get a seat together (Bernd, Angelika, Johanna, Franzi, Maike, Anne, ... read more

What a wonderful 1st week back in Stockum. I've had a great time with family and friends. It is kind of amazing how many friends I still have around here even 10 years after I lived here. Here are some of the weeks highlights ;-) Monday I went for a walk around Stockum with my friend Nina and her new 9 month old baby Maja. =) She was soooo adorable. It was great to catch up with Nina. We took the shorter walk as rain was threatening, although it did not appear. Tuesday afternoon I met up with Juli and her husband Christian. We went into Sundern for ice cream. MMMMMM... straweberrry cup. I love it. =) I really I'm going to miss the ice cream. It was fun just hanging out with them. In the ... read more

Ahhh.... what a relaxing Sunday it was. (Especially considering Marina and I were at the wedding till 2am) Of course, neither of us woke up really early. Unfortunately, Marina had to head back to Köln soon after she got up. She still had a lot of studying to do and a test to take. =/ She's studying for the German equivalent of the CPA exam. But, it was still very very nice to see her and, I'll be seeing her again when I go to Köln next week. =) Later that afternoon, Mama, Papa and I went for a walk around the Sorpesee, a lake in the area. Just a few years ago, they re-did the area around the lake, with new walkways and play areas for kids. It's sooooo nice. There were quite a number ... read more

The weather today was cold and rainy. Despite that, it was such a wonderful day. Juli and Christian got married. They were wed at the church in Allendorf at 11am. The service was a fairly typical catholic service. In many ways, the wedding was much like those in the US. If I were to detail the whole day, this would be a very long entry, so I'll mostly just detail the differences. When we walked into the church, I was surprised not to see Christain, the groom standing at the alter. I just figured he must just be standing out of my sight. But nope, he wasn't up in front. When the wedding march sounded on the organ, Juli and Christian walked up the aisle together. Typically here, the fatehr does not give the bride away. ... read more

Yesterday, I left home and a 3 hour car ride, almost 11 hour flight and another 2 1/2 hour car ride I arrived home. =) It feels so good to be back in Germany. The plane ride was uneventful, exactly the way it should be. I was sooo excited when we finally landed in Frankfurt. I knew my papa was waiting for me and I couldn't wait to see him. I was going to have to be patient though, as it took over an hour to get off the plane, walk thorugh the airport (and walk and walk and walk), go through customs and get my bag. When I was finally able to walk through the doors exiting out to where people were waiting to meet passengers I was thouroughly exhausted but also filled with excitement ... read more

We decided not to stop in Birmingham and instead drove straight through to New Orleans, giving us an extra day here (we definitely put it to good use). We arrived on Monday evening and because of the rain (and the long drive), we decided not to head into the French Quarter and instead spent the evening at our hostel (which definitely merits a description here shortly) doing laundry and relaxing in our lovely air conditioned room. We've been staying at the India House just off of Canal Street, a couple miles from the French Quarter. I would definitely recommend this hostel. We're staying in a four bed ensuit (meaning it's just us and we have our own bathroom), so I'm not sure what the shared rooms are like here. But, it's just a neat place. They've ... read more

ahhhhh.... what a wonderful weekend this has been. Yesterday we finished the drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway and we even had beautiful weather! We even got to eat our lunch outside on a picnic table!!! Unfortunately I didn't see much of it 'cause I got a little car sick, so slept most of the drive. However, what I did see was gorgeous and I was told I missed several really great overlooks. It's definitely a drive I would like to do again, but next time I'd take more than 2 days. It took us about 16 hours to drive the whole parkway, so that didn't leave much time to see much along the way. Even though I didn't get to see much of it (due to a rainy and foggy day the first half of ... read more

So, I should be lying in my tent right about now, exhausted from a day of hiking along trails in Shenandoah National Park. Instead I'm here sitting in a hotel room in Wilksboro, NC with sleeping bags, clothes, pillows and the tent lying about the room drying out. Here's why: The drive down to Shenandoah took us longer than it should have. First we got lost trying to leave DC (because of our wonderfully incorrect mapquest directions). Lucky for us we have maps to refer to (and Evy is a great navigator), we eventually found the highway we needed to get on and were on our way south. After that the drive was pretty much uneventful until we got close to the park. One of the little highways we were supposed to take was closed ... read more
