We hadn't really planned to go any further south given we only have 2.5 weeks but needs must when the North of France is cold and wet. Rained all night and still at it in the morning. Enough is enough, a summer is needed. Off we go south. Headed for Bordeaux but first of all using quieter roads though at first we found ourselves on dual carriageways which I prefer to avoid as they send me to sleep and I can't snap snap with my camera to keep me awake. Fortunately near Pons, Bob pulled off to find a garage as we needed fuel and we somehow lost our way a little and Tomtom was also a bit confused. We drove through Pons, which fortunately was just big enough for us and Tandy, a rather attractive ... read more

Europe » France » Poitou-Charentes » La Rochelle June 20th 2016

We've visited La Rochelle once before, via boat from Ile d'Oleron. This time we took the rather handy train. Only 10 minutes to Chatelaillon station by scooter and 11 minutes on the train to La Rochelle. Easy. A good decision as not a good weather day, grey and chilly. Better walking round a lovely town than braving the windy seafront. Had a lovely day and out of the wind it was a little warmer but we saw lots of people huddled up in their big coats. Very unseasonably cold. There seemed to be quite a number of Euro 2016 supporters about, especially Irish. The town was buzzing with lots of visitors, all wandering about taking in the sights the same as us. We had a picnic in the main square for lunch, courtesy of the local ... read more

Europe » France » Poitou-Charentes » Chatelaillon-Plage June 19th 2016

Decided to visit the Marais d'Yves as we had seen quite a few interesting birds of prey on our drive to the campsite. Followed the road along the coast south as best we could but not easy as they are building sea defences so part of the road was diverted. No obvious road to take and the only signs we saw to the Reseve were along the main road and as usual when we are on the scooter we try to use the nice quiet back roads. The nice quiet back road we chose took us in completely the wrong direction and well away from the coast line. We backtracked and found ourselves on a dual carriageway but only 3km from an aire which promised to take us to the Reserve. I don't know what it ... read more

We've moved further south and back to the mainland. Chose a good day to drive as raining in the morning but cleared up and sun came out once we had arrived at our campsite. Not a terribly interesting drive, very flat in the Vendee and we didn't go through any pretty villages. Just the nature of the countryside in this part of France. All the area along the coast above La Rochelle is a string of seaside towns just waiting to be filled with thousands of summer visitors. The campsites are pretty well wall to wall for miles. We headed for La Rochelle and accidentally almost went through as the turn towards Rochefort was badly signposted. Bob managed to find a roundabout to turn round just as I was attacking the food cupboard which had come ... read more

Hurray and Hurrah. Woke this morning to the view of bright blue sky through the Tandy skylight and not a drop of rain has fallen on us all day. In fact I have managed to top up my tan a little. Out and about quite early. Kisbee the Scooter out of the garage and raring to go as it's not been anywhere since last September. We took the road to Noirmoutier en L'Ile along the narrow spit of land from the southern part of the island where our campsite is located. We have been to Noirmoutier before and I proved it by taking a photo of a rather attractive triangular shaped shop and found its duplicate , on the laptop, from our visit in September 2007 when we got back. Had a nice little stroll round ... read more

Woken with a start at 8.30 by sound of loud speakers at the campsite entrance. Looked out and there was a crowd of men just outside. Thought for a moment it might be one of the current strikes but pleased when we realised it was a boules tournament. Never seen so many men throwing to many little silver balls about. Obviously a major event in the region and it was all being taken very seriously. Today we were headed for the coast, in fact off the coast at Ile Noirmoutier. We've been to the island before but must be 10 years ago. We took the autoroute part of the way as needed to avoid both Angers and Nantes, neither of which are ideal cities for navigating through the centre in a 3.5 ton motorhome. At least ... read more

Driven through some heavy showers today and the fields along the way are sodden and bear witness to the amount of rain that has fallen in the past few days. Occasionally there were breaks in the cloud and we spotted some blue patches but not much sun around. My weather map tells me the best place in France for guaranteed sunshine at the moment is Corsica. Trying not to dwell on that. As I sit here in the Tandy the rain is going pitter patter on the roof. The worse part of 'camping' when it rains is not being able to get towels dry. My swimming towel was unpleasantly damp again when I used it after my swim in the pool. I really could do with a heated airing cupboard. Hopefully it will soon dry off ... read more

Europe » France » Lower Normandy » Lisieux June 13th 2016

Drive down through Normandy avoiding motorways, as usual (as they send me to sleep) and keeping to the quieter roads which take us through pretty little villages. All very rural and pretty wet. There's been a lot of rain in this area, and indeed throughout France for several days now. We are consoled by the fact that it's raining at home too. The prime concern was to get over the Seine without going anywhere near Rouen as that is somewhere we try very hard to avoid having twice in the past encountered problems there. Bob instead navigated a route over Pont Bretonne and down through Port Audenay. Then we were in the area of lovely Normandy timbered houses. If this area was a bit warmer it would be lovely for a full visit but we are ... read more

Europe » France » Nord-Pas de Calais June 12th 2016

Great advantage to travelling to the Dover on a Sunday is no traffic holdups. Really rather a wet drive and felt rather sorry as we got near London as the Queen was having a 90th Birthday street party on the mall and we were driving through heavy rain. At least it was much warmer than on the first attempt at a holiday, 11 days ago. Arrived beautifully early at Dover, nicely in time to go pretty well straight onto the earlier ferry. Not even time to eat our sandwiches (looked forward to my egg butty all the way down fron hone as unable to eat the last lot which Bob had so carefully made). We were in Calais by early afternoon and at our Campsite (Chateau Camping de la Bien Assise) within the hour. Last stayed ... read more

Europe » France » Corsica June 1st 2016

June trip all planned. 1 week to South of France, ferry to Corsica. 2 weeks round the island, ferry back to Toulon then slowly home. Then the French started playing silly wotsits and striking and burning tyres all round France and especially the areas we needed to be to get to Corsica. Plan A Corsica put on hold. Ferry rescheduled for September when hopefully the strikers will have got bored and gone back to work. Plan B. Let's go to Tuscany in Italy via Switzerland which will require only minimal driving through France and therefore no problem with lack of fuel. Packed and ready in good time but found it difficult to motivate myself as had developed a rapidly worsening cough and throat. Got up to leave first thing on the Wednesday, unable to swallow, cold, ... read more
