Driving day today. Due south or as much so as Bob could persuade Tina Tomtom to take us. He instructed her that we didn’t want toll roads, motorways or even dualled N roads. She was a bit surprised at first but rose to the challenge and plotted us a straight line route through France with barely a major road in sight. A very easy drive all the way (certainly for me as passenger !), along some pretty country roads, past fields full of nodding sunflowers and ripening corn, then vineyards as we approached the Loire valley. The traffic was light being a Sunday and indeed as we drove through some of the towns we did wonder where everyone was as we saw very few people out and about. Must have been extended Sunday lunch time. We ... read more

Today was our test run for Bob’s new device. A handlebar holder for the Tomtom so we could use it on the Kisbee scooter. We got up and out quite early for us and were on our way by 10am. The Tomtom behaved perfectly and took us straight in to the Cathedral. What an impressive sight. It isn’t often that one gets an uninterrupted view of a cathedral but the Le Mans one is perched up above a big open square with a commanding view of all it surveys. Coffee first and then we climbed up to the steps for a visit. Such excellent timing. We realised very quickly that a wedding was about to start so went to the front doors as they were opened and all the quests came flooding in. The priest then ... read more

The sky was clear when we went to bed even if a little chilly but my goodness, did it rain in the night. Had to leap up to shut the roof vents. Luckily it had dried off by the time we got ready to leave. Heading south, Le Mans first stop on our way to the south as though we’ve driven past we’ve never visited up to now and Bob has found a campsite close enough so we can scooter in. The overnight rain returned as we left and stayed with us all morning on and off. Reminds us of the weather we’ve been having in Staffordshire this summer, a little bit too much cloud and grey sky and too little blue sky and sun. We were not in any particular rush so Bob chose a ... read more

Oh dear. Just discovered that according to our last blog, from June 28th, we are still wandering round France heading homewards but never quite getting there. I am happy to report we did make it home after a one night stop at our favourite aire at Le Crotoy (where we had a prime seaview spot so were extremely happy). We even managed to get to England via the Chunnel between closures because of migrants and then ferry worker fires. Once home we’ve had a very pleasant 2 months of English summer including a 3 day camping trip in Stratford with sister Liz and cousin Denise, as we’ve done now for the last 3 years. We’ve seen all our children (5) and grandchildren (11 including Bob’s 2 greats). We’ve enjoyed our newly worked back garden which ... read more

Bob had carefully chosen a route, for our quite long travelling day, to be half quiet country roads and half dual carriageway. It worked very well and Clarissa Tomtom was pretty much up to the challenge. We followed the coast down to St Brieuc passing several seaside towns, including Binic, a very popular holiday resort with the French and where I stayed for a few day a long time ago, As usual for France everywhere is lovely and tidy and clean, full of flowers and the roadsides totally lacking in litter. I wish I knew what it is the French do to persuade people not to just drop their rubbish down. I know of several areas of Britain which could take lessons from them. From St Brieuc we took a faster dual carriageway to get us ... read more

Europe » France » Brittany » Paimpol June 27th 2015

Another scooter day and Kisbee has really enjoyed itself whizzing us along the quiet lanes of this beautiful part of Brittany which we have been enjoying so much. It did help that the sun was out and shining beautifully with just a hint of cloud to protect us from burning. We stopped first at the Moulin de Craca. A full sailed windmill on a cliff top overlooking the bay of Paimpol. Only two problems. One, the mill is only open to visitors on Sunday and Tuesday and it was Saturday. Two, the carpark was pretty full with traveller, French ones this time, caravans, vans, and campervans. We noted that they were stealing electricity by wiring their cable directly into the windmill’s external supply. We decided not to park Kisbee in among them so drove through the ... read more

A scooter day out today and it was altogether very enjoyable. First stop Paimpol which delighted us. A busy harbour town with the harbour spread across two sides of the lock access to the open sea. We noticed that the majority of the boats have sails so presume this is a good piece of coastline for sailing. To brighten up the harbour’s edge there was an exposition of Cochons, similar to ones we’ve seen before of decorated cows but these, somewhat amusingly, were a line of brightly coloured pigs. The town itself is quite a reasonable size and has a lot of roads crossing it as we found out later when we tried to find the right road out of town. We went for a stroll through the streets, most decorated with colourful bunting and filled ... read more

Left our site at Carantec to travel a bit further West to Cap Horn, just south of Paimpol. We drove along some very pretty Breton countryside with occasional glimpses of the sea as the road went nearer to the coast. Lannion was an interesting town to drive through. Built along a river we were amazed to see the most enormous market along one side. We weren’t held up by it for long but I doubt we would have found anywhere to park if we had planned to stop here. We realised as we were driving along that we were likely to find the campsite shut for lunch if we arrived too early. When we came to Tréguier Bob turned off and into the town and fantastically, but not unusually for France which is motorhome friendly, there ... read more

This is a combined 3 day blog covering the 3 days we spent in Carantec with friends Janet and Eric. They had been on the site (Camping les Mouettes, Carantec) already for almost 2 weeks so when we arrived we asked if the pitch next to them was free and it was. We’ve stayed here once before, in September 2010 when we paid ACSI (discounted) prices. The ‘campsite’ has now become a holiday park with a small area for tourers like ourselves. Facilities, super pool, shop etc are still exactly as they were then but now they cost twice as much as this is a Yelloh site. We also annoyingly had to pay all 3 days upfront. All the pitches with any possible view to the sea have been filled with statics as have most areas ... read more

I was right about the nasty wind and it certainly made itself felt today. It must have been what blew last night’s mist in and left more cloud today than forecast. Not complaining you understand (as we believe the UK is not having good weather) and the sky is beautifully blue most of the time. It did mean we wore an extra layer for scootering today as out of the sun it really can feel quite cold. Poor Bob gets the full force of the chill on the scooter as he is on the front and I’m tucked in cosily behind. He also gets the bites from the insects which fly into him. We went to Locronan first. Again we have visited here before but it is one of the 'most beautiful villages of France' and ... read more
